What brings you contentment? ?

Holding my husband’s hand before we go off to sleep at night in the knowledge that our family are all fine in their own lives.

I usually give mine a nudge because he's snoring.

Knowing everything is fine with the family is a big bonus otherwise I wake in the night, worrying, although there is nothing I can do.

A quiet day ,a good book , a nice film ,afternoon tea /drinks in the garden with friends ...and as a self confessed planta -aholic it's every time one of my plants rewards me with flowers .

I then get called ‘shallow and cruel’ for not considering widowed members and when I mention that I was widowed at a young age you tell me that I should know exactly how upsetting my comment could be.

Furthermore I’m called tactless and inconsiderate by mawthemerrier for not considering those nursing terminally ill husbands.

Meanwhile neither of you respond to hollysteers comment about smoking a fag after sex.

Enid101 the question was what brings you contentment and for you that’s sex, I think fair enough.
If we had to respond to various posts on GN considering everyone’s potential situation nothing would ever be said. We all try and be sensitive to specific posts, but to this open query on contentment we can only be honest.

Just had a long FaceTime with 19 year old DGD1, currently being a young leader at a summer camp for young musicians in the US. She is now a third of the way through her time there, is incredibly busy and as happy as possible. Such a tonic to hear her news and I am so grateful for modern technology making such a call possible.

I’m a widowed member of Gransnet and wasn’t offended by either posts. I presumed they were jokes.

What a shame a sour note was introduced into a gentle thread I started with such high hopes that it would be uplifting and heartwarming.

The lovely thing about this thread is that money does not come into the equation. It really is the simple things in life which we love- a cup of coffee, a good book etc. Nobody has mentioned round the world cruises or anything costing any money.

Enid are you new or a re-incarnation? This was a lovely thread until you de-railed it. Totally unnecessary.

I know little of Maw but I have read online she has not had an easy life in the recent past.

I am saddened at how easily a gentle thread can be spoiled. I was enjoying reading the posts, until .....
Some of us with little joy in our lives at present, value these, pleasant non-confrontational threads, which allow everyone to post, without any worry of being shot down in flames.

Let’s carry on with this beautiful thread from MawtheMerrier theres enough doom gloom going on in the world .
Contentment for me are the memories of having a great marriage and knowing that my kids are happy .

Discontentment comes from comparing self with others. Obviously we all need basics like food and shelter.

Good point Henetha, that it's contentment not 'happiness' that is up for discussion.

Yes. Caleo. Comparison truly is the thief of joy.
And like you, henetha, contentment has always been my goal.
Especially as a lifelong sufferer of GAD.

What a lovely post..for Me its spending time with My Partner and looking after My first Grandaughter once a week.. She gives Me so much joy and lots of cuddles of course

Dealing with family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and knowing all is well with them. If one of them is I’ll or not in a good place I tend to suffer with them ( but I would never tell them!). Floating up and down the pool in Summer watching the birds in the trees overhead. Cuddling our two cats. Evening after supper when we sit in the back room with a glass of wine, a fire and something good on tv. Actually I am mostly content, 9/10 times at least.

Contentment definitely different from happiness for me
Contentment is finding a new amazing author with six books in a series on kindle unlimited and it is cold enough for the heater to be on.
That is a day to be content

Having family all together. We're only a small family and daughter lives 120 miles away so doesn't happen very often.
When my father died I was in a position to be able to divide my inheritance equally between me and 2 adult children. Was good to see them enjoy it with their families.

cup of strong tea, good drama on tv, feet up and a complicated piece of knitting on my needles. Even better when the curtains are drawn against pouring rain and howling wind

Lots of craft projects on the go. Taking my dog for a walk. Catching up on soaps and watching crime dramas on tv. Trying a new recipe and it comes out well. Most of all seeing my children and grandchildren.

I think walking my dog.

On a sunny day, walking up the hills in the Durham and Yorkshire Dales (takes some doing these days) and, on reaching the top, sitting and admiring the view. Pure contentment.....

Finding a new walk in beautiful countryside and not in my immediate neighbourhood. Bliss!
Oh, and family get-togethers - love them.

Knowing that my 4 adult DC are all doing OK atm. They have all had so many problems over the last few years due to covid. Bankruptcy, serious health problems, mobility issues, redundancy etc but now all sorted, employed etc.
My 2 dogs as I know they will bark incessantly if anyone tried to break in at night.
Having savings now so I feel more financially secure than in previous times.
Living on the coast in our lovely home and AC all now have their own home.
Knowing that when the AC and DGC visit and stay they are getting a nice holiday here that's not costing them money.
That I've now bought another car so I can go out without OH. I'm independent again.
