Long nails on older hands. What do you think?

I have strong nails. I’m going for a manicure this week (you can see how they’ve grown in a month!) & would normally have them snipped right down. However this time because it’s summer, I’m tempted to just have gel polish put on them and not have them cut. But would it be a bad look for a ‘pensioner’? Do long nails just look better on the young? I’m wary of them looking like talons ...

Since I have been taking medication for Osteoporosis I have had strong long fingernails which have been much admired. On the other hand I have developed equally fast growing toe nails which are so tough that I have great difficulty cutting them by myself. I have never been to a chiropodist and dread the thought of someone else cutting my toenails or touching my feet at all!

I don’t like long nails at all but I defend your right, ladies, to have what you like. Some of you have lovely hands.

Do whatever you would like. It’s a bonus to have strong well shaped nails ……so why not show them off to their best advantage? Personally I think the look of well cared for manicured nails is a good look at any age!

I am in my sixties and have my nails gel polished every 3 weeks. My beautician cuts them down as they grow quick in between treatments.
Personally I prefer pale pink gel polish to brighter colours and it makes me feel good.
My Mum, who was in her nineties when she died and living in a care home, had her nails done regularly and in fact had them done the day before she passed away. It always made her feel good.
So I recommend it if it makes you feel good 💅

I know this is an old thread but it's nice to have a happy one!

Let's have more "nice nails" photos please.
Mine are short and dull, unfortunately.

They are beautiful nails! Keep them and be proud!!

I have always had beautifully shaped hands with oval nails wheich I grew long as a young woman. For many years I managed to keep them long even when typing. I keep them shorter nowadays for convenience because I use a computer for hours every day. I dont think it matters what age you are. You should dress as you please.

If you like the look, go for it! As long as they don't get in the way of using a touch screen, playing the piano, picking your nose - all reasons why I can't consider growing mine!

Babsbada Wed 01-May-24 12:27:30

Definitely shorter nails. No question.
Good manicure and good hand care. Go for it!

Are nail bars regulated in any way re products and staff?

ReadyMeals Wed 01-May-24 12:14:05

Your nails are a nice shape. My mother had ones that curved like talons and she would really have looked better with them shorter, but it looks like you can carry it off well.

What utter rubbbish strong well manicured nails look great at any age gives a well groomed appearance

undines Wed 01-May-24 11:58:46

Your nails look lovely. Have them how you like them - they're glamorous and beautifully shaped.

Dillonsgranma Wed 01-May-24 11:51:29

Have them just a tiny bit shorter. They be look good to me 🥰👏😊

Beautiful nails Urmstongran! I think they are just the right length - elegant but not too long to get in the way!
Nail colour is a very personal thing, but surprisingly, strong dark colours can look quite pleasing on older hands.

I too have strong nails.

Would not dream of growing talons, which look like nothing but talons at any age!

icanhandthemback Wed 01-May-24 11:25:00

If you like the look of polished, long nails, that is all that matters. Don't worry about what other people think.

Gosh, Urms I’d give my right arm (? IYKWIM) for those - mine are so rubbish and nothing I eat/ supplement/paint seems to work! Grrr?

Me too, I had extensions for years when I was working so that they would look respectable. Now I just cut them short and they still crack up very easily.

Very elegant, as long as they are a nice shape & not sharp 😊

Oh Gawd! I’ve done it again haha

Cossy Mon 29-Apr-24 14:03:16

Do what you want! I’m 65 and I have nails about this length and love them varnished and they look fine and people comment on how nice they look. I wouldn’t have really really long ones!
