Long nails on older hands. What do you think?

I have strong nails. I’m going for a manicure this week (you can see how they’ve grown in a month!) & would normally have them snipped right down. However this time because it’s summer, I’m tempted to just have gel polish put on them and not have them cut. But would it be a bad look for a ‘pensioner’? Do long nails just look better on the young? I’m wary of them looking like talons ...

Effalump. Please explain the link between endocrine disrupters and IVF. I have never read nor heard about it so need to know and understand more. Perhaps my ignorance could be directed towards the research.

My manicurist is our nearly ten year old granddaughter who can varnish nails far better than I can. I usually go with her colour choice although draw the line at assorted colours on the same hand!

It’s not as tight as that photos shows, Karma although it’s fair to say I’ve expanded over the years but my ring hasn’t. ??

crikey Sue, your ring looks far too tight

I had my - short - nails done today. I thought they looked summery. My dd says they look as if I’ve dipped them into amoxycillin syrup. RUDE! Though she’s not wrong. ?

They look very nice. If I may be so bold, I don't think the problem in the first picture was the length, but that your polish had grown out. I'm not familiar with gels but can't you re- do them when it grows out?

Lovely Urms. I'm envious. My nails are stumps and haven't grown one iota for about 5 years, apart from my thumb nails, which is very odd. My hands have so many horrible veins that they look like Spaghetti junction.

I think I’m just lucky not to have knuckles with lumps and bumps from arthritis. My poor friend has had to stop wearing her rings because of them.

I went for a paler shade too, bearing in mind what some of you had said and I’m delighted with gel!

They look lovely, Urms! You have very elegant hands.

Helen657 Thu 30-Jun-22 12:28:12

You have lovely hands Urms - very elegant, and I love the colour you’ve chosen.
I’m going for my regular gel nails appointment tomorrow, my nails grow about 1mm a week and start to get in the way if I let them get too long, don’t think I could last 4 weeks, even though they still look okay.

Glad you went for it Urms.
I love the colour names, Millie22.
Mine’s usually nutter butter. I like colours that don’t show too obviously that it’s a while since I had them done.

Looks just like my colour which is called Petal.

In the care home where I used to be Chaplain many of the residents had beautiful long nails and really looked forward to the visits from the manicurist. Just please yourself Urms and don’t bother what other people may think.

They look beautiful Urms!
And you have really lovely hands.

My nails are currently quite long; and I’ve been mulling over doing them (I do my own with a lamp)
I haven’t done them for ages, so it might be a nice small way to celebrate my new hip (hip hooray!)

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-Jun-22 10:14:30

Hi Urms that is the so close to the colour I am having for my hollibobs ?

Urmstongran Thu 30-Jun-22 10:12:01

Tada!

Just back from the salon. I decided to have some gel polish applied & keep my nails this length for 4 weeks (just for fun!) until my next appointment when I will have them snipped short as usual.

Thanks so much everyone for joining in. It’s also been lovely to see so many different posters on this thread!

Try SNS. Slightly more expensive than gel, but doesn’t chip and makes nails as hard as…well nails! Both gel and SNS ruin your nails, but as someone who has always worn nail polish, and always will, it doesn’t bother me. I am having mine replaced on Friday, and having nail art, ‘tart’ that I am.

I think it depends on what your hands are like at any age, and yours are very elegant if I may say so. I don’t think your nails are overly long and I think they’d look smashing with gel polish, or an elegant french manicure.

NanTheWiser Wed 29-Jun-22 12:14:04

Ooh, thank you, Urms on both counts!

Urmstongran Tue 28-Jun-22 22:20:55

Oh Betty18 and Nannagarra you’re both braver than me re colour! But know what? I so admire you both (and others) for bucking the trend! It’s easy to play safe like me.

I think long, manicured nails look lovely on any age hands. I’ve never been able to grow long nails as they just chip or tear. So soft they bend
