Long nails on older hands. What do you think?

I have strong nails. I’m going for a manicure this week (you can see how they’ve grown in a month!) & would normally have them snipped right down. However this time because it’s summer, I’m tempted to just have gel polish put on them and not have them cut. But would it be a bad look for a ‘pensioner’? Do long nails just look better on the young? I’m wary of them looking like talons ...
?

They look far better than the false talons that some people have. Plus all the chemicals used in their removal are known as endocrine disrupters. Probably why IVF is so common these days. Urmstongran, you stay with the natural look, so so much better and be proud of having such strong nails. My nails break so easily.

I’m so envious of all your beautiful nails! I have broad hands and short square nails, and I garden a lot, so not much hope. Can anyone fill me in on gels, gel nails, French tips, etc?

Depends what you call long nail? There are long nails and there are long nail. - mine are on the long side, but too long and I can't type on my laptop I hope they look elegant!

These days I favour a square look. Not so talon like.
Love a funky colour too.

do what makes you happy, i have never had long or false nails, not had nail polish on mine since i was 20...now 59, i keep mine very short as i need to put steroid cream on everyday. we have a lady in my area who is in her 70s and she has long false nails, leather mini skirt and high heeled ankle boots and a cowboy leather jacket with the fringe. some people stare and laugh at her but to me it is each to there own.

Loving all the photos of people’s beautiful nails. Post filing yesterday mine are the length of yours, Urms. I won’t post as the colour could cause some funny turns: the lovely Emily encouraged me to go beyond my comfort zone!

Your hands and nails are fabulous, Urms. Very elegant. Go for it.

I have bitten my nails, all of my life. I had a wonderful neighbour, who has her own beauty business. She used to do my acrylic nails for free. Unfortunately she moved abroad with her family about 3 years ago. I am disabled and found it difficult to get someone to come to our home. My own nails were like tissue paper, when I soaked the acrylic off. I was determined never to bite my nails again. I bought nail strengthening products , which worked wonders. My nails are absolutely beautiful now, even though I say so myself. Yes they are sort of long, but not too long..I am 71 now, and really proud of my nails.

Wow, absolutely WOW.... why does it have to be that as we age, a lot of sexy sasssiness disappears with the years???? Keep those beautiful nails, be proud of them. Good grief, I refuse point blank to stop allllll signs of sasssssinesssss, POINT BLANK.

Your nails are BEAUTIFUL ?

Just this Urmstongran.

Serendipity22, you are my kind of person ?

Natural long nails look nice on anyone. False square ended or really pointed don't. I'd go for a slightly subtle colour but that's just me.

I only paint my toenails in summer.
Nails on my hands are too weak and brittle to paint with anything other than nail strengthening polish.
Even that doesn’t last very long.

Corkie91 Tue 28-Jun-22 17:56:44

Your nails look wonderful get the polish and dont cut them

Oldbat1 Tue 28-Jun-22 16:42:52

How do people keep their nails looking so good? Housework, gardening, dog walking would soon mean nail polish disaster. In summer I usually put polish on my toes but not this year as yet. Can’t understand how women cope with talon type of nails just day to day stuff like eg going to the loo.

NanTheWiser Tue 28-Jun-22 16:35:05

Love your nails, Urmstongran! I was 21 before I managed to stop biting mine, and I then took pride in having long nails and pretty polish (I’m 75 now)

These are mine - about as long as I let them grow - they’ll get a trim next week. My nails tend to be weak and bendy, so I apply several coats of nail strengthener before the polish, and a base and top coat.

I’ve never had acrylics or gels at a nail bar, as they do tend to ruin your nails eventually (as my granddaughter has found out!) and I enjoy doing my own manicures.

Lupatria Tue 28-Jun-22 16:09:13

nothing wrong with your nails urmstongran - they're lovely.
i have had acrylic nails for years and like to keep them longer than my fingers but not talon length. i go to the nail bar every four weeks for infills and also have my toenails painted to match my fingernails - gold topped with "sparkles".
i get so many compliments which is nice at my age - 74.
so go for it urmstongran you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I think long flashy nails should be packed away along with the blood red lipstick and uni girl hair (center part, a$$ long, bottle yellow) when age begins to show in face and neck. But that's just me. Do what makes you and your S.O. happy.

Jennyluck Tue 28-Jun-22 15:46:19

I have my nails done ever 4 weeks. I have acrylic nails and gel polish. I have them quite long. And I’ve had every colour going. My own nails just break and split.
I love having my nails done. I’ve been having them done for about 10 years. I also have gel polish on my toes in the summer.
I’m 67 by the way.
I don’t care what anybody thinks.
So go for it , have a nice bright colour for the summer.

Urmstongran Tue 28-Jun-22 15:46:03

Good point ExDancer I’ve never used a nail brush so regularly as recently. I had the exact same thought!

Flo122 Tue 28-Jun-22 15:38:19

I do a lot of typing and the sound of nails clattering on the keyboard sets my teeth on edge, so I keep them short. If you want your lovely long nails polished, go for it.

Riverwalk Tue 28-Jun-22 15:36:05

I think there's some confusion about gel - it's just a type of nail varnish that dries quickly and is very durable. Looks and feels exactly like ordinary varnish and goes on long or short nails!

ExDancer Tue 28-Jun-22 15:30:42

How do gels stand up to gardening, or using a phone or computer?
I also feel somewhat suspicious about the state of cleanliness, I shudder to think what nasties may lurk under those brightly coloured talons.

Nannina Tue 28-Jun-22 15:30:09

I think you should do what suits you. I’ve always had strong nails and liked to show them off with strong colours but they’ve become quite brittle lately so I’m keeping them shorter and using paler colours. Does anyone know if the old cube of jelly a day actually works in strengthening nails?

grandtanteJE65 Tue 28-Jun-22 15:29:34

I think your nails look lovely, umstronggran, as does you hand.

I don't think lenght of nails has anything to do with age, but much more with the shape of both nails and hands.

I would happily wear mine the same lenght as yours, if only I could accustom myself to doing so, but having had short nails since I started playing the piano when I was 6, I just cannot bear the feel of long nails on my hands.

Yammy Tue 28-Jun-22 15:26:41

Dior Glow on short fingernails to end of fingers for me , coloured polish on short toenails. I have strong nails and have to cut them every week so that isn't the reason I have them short.
Each to their own if you like them long keep them long at least you have an excuse for watching Wimbledon.smile

Yiayia4 Tue 28-Jun-22 15:22:23

I would love to have nice nails.Mine are pitted with psoriasis.I’m thinking of having gel nails done to hide them.

Urmstongran Tue 28-Jun-22 15:10:51

X posts - no, 4allweknow my toenails are very short indeed with shiny coral polish. Nice in sandals. In fact all through the year!
