Today I saw Nellie, Olive, Ada and Elsie sitting around the table chatting. You might think I was visiting my local care home but no, it was open afternoon at my grandsons nursery school and these beautiful young ladies were all aged 4. Who would have thought such old names would have been so popular again

My elder granddaughter is Olive unfortunately a name I dislike - On the buses and Popeye! When she’s old enough to understand the connotations she may (I hope) become Liv or Livvy…

Callistemon21 Tue 05-Jul-22 15:04:45

Or change the e to ia?

Spec1alk Tue 05-Jul-22 15:06:55

My grannies were Isobel - belle to her friends and Mary. Both born in the 1900’s.
My mum was Doreen and her sister Phyllis. Both born in the 1930’s.
I’m Karen and my sister Laura 1950’s. My children Steven James and Christopher Andrew. Both born in the 1970’s.
Their children born in the 90’s and 00’s are Katrina, Laura, Jamie and Max.
Names are fascinating aren’t they?

I've never met an Elvis.
Only someone with a similar Italian version of the name.

I have never met him but have heard of him he was, dare I say it a traveller and all the brothers and sisters had names like Buddy or Peggy Sue. He went to a school close to where I taught.

Callistemon21 Tue 05-Jul-22 15:35:29

Yammy isn't one of Jamie Oliver's children called Buddy?

I think Buddy Holly's real name was Charles ?

Olive…..Who remembers ”On the Buses”

Yes it's the first face that springs to mind when I hear that name and Nelly the elephant when I hear that one.

My nine year old great granddaughter is Abigail Evelyn. Evelyn my name, has been passed down through the family since the seventeenth century. My helps new granddaughter is Daisy May and my great nieces are Kenya and Summer.
Abigail’s classmates are Annie, Gracie, Ella, Zara, Sophie, Freya, Olivia, Violet.
My sister (1926) was Winifred and I had an aunt named Mafekine because she was born on the day of the relief of that town in the Boer War.

I like old fashioned names and have a rather special place in my heart for my friend’s little granddaughter who is named Gwendolyn. They are a Welsh family and the grandchildren have Welsh names, but Gwendolyn was my own grandmother’s name & we were close. I love Ada, Ava, Elsie, Edith, Bessie, Wilbur, Wilfred, Stanley, Henry, Hector& Arthur. I would feel sorry for a baby given the name Gladys, Mildred, Joyce, Beryl, Norma, Brenda, because they are so dated for girls, the same as Nigel, Gary, Philip, Adrian, Ivor, Norman&Leslie are dated for boys. I would never interfere and voice my opinion.

I heard a granny calling for a little Isabella the other morning at Softplay

Doris and Gladys still to make a comeback though.

And not heard of many named Phyllis or Winifred either.

Please put me right if you know any.

One of my Grandaughter's has Winifred as her middle name. Named after her Great Grandmother

The three kids over the garden fence to me are called Charles…Henry …. and Elsie.
All lovely kids….. except when they’re in possession of a garden hose! Still., I give as good as I get!

FYI - Mercedes is the Spanish for Mercy, an old Quaker name.
The Spanish name many girls Maria de….. ( Mary of …..) so Maria de los Mercedes is Mary of the Mercies, and the Maria de bit tends not to be iterated. Madonna’s daughter Lourdes is more formally Maria de Lourdes ( as in the Virgin who appeared to St Bernadette in the little southern French town), Montse is Montserrat, for Maria del Montserrat for a similar appearance in the mountains near Barcelona. Mercedes is a very old name, I believe Mr. Benz named his car design after his daughter.

My dad was Herbert and his sisters were Gladys and Edna. I don't expect any of them to become popular any time soon! I was named Joan but considered it old-fashioned so changed it unofficially to Joanne at university as it seemed much younger. Most friends shorten it to Jo and I have quite a few friends called Jo but they are all Josephines.

I don’t think you need to worry Autumnrose. Two generations on people have never heard of Popeye or On the buses.
That was what first sprang to my mind when my 8 year old GD was given the name. ( It was also my mothers name and she hated it because of Olive Oyl).
However when I mentioned On the buses and Olive Oyl to my son and DIL they looked at me as if I’d lost it as they'd never heard of either.
Ive go used to the name and grown to like it. Eight years on Granddaughter and parents are very happy with their choice.

I dislike it when animals are given human names, though I have done it myself blush
I've yet to come across the reverse and babies being named after dogs.
Rover! Piper! grin
Our family has a very small name pool. I even share my name with the other gran.
I once overheard a mother calling her baby Elvis Callistemon

My little great niece is named Mia Primrose, her younger cousin is Gianna Elizabeth , both beautiful little girls ..

Before I pop my cloggs I'd like to see Margaret make a comeback. Or even Maggs. But NOT Maggie. Not much hope though because Mrs Thatcher still has left some bad associations. Never-ending. One of my granddaughters is Jessica and another has Jessie as a middle name which was my mother's name. My middle name has already made a comeback. Lily. That will have to do.

SachaMac Tue 05-Jul-22 17:50:13

I had a grandma called Doris but she was known as Doll by her family. I love the Irish names I have a GD Niamh, I also like Aoife.
I have friends with GD’s called Alice & Evelyn both good old fashioned names. Wonder if Mavis or Shirley will ever be fashionable again. There were quite a few Linda’s, Julie’s, Sharon’s & Karen’s plus a couple of Beverleys in my year at school but I can’t see any of them making a comeback.

Sarah, Emily, Elizabeth and Lucy never seem to go out of fashion.

The two boys' names that are definitely going to be naughty boys are Dennis and Boris. You can guarantee they will be naughty. Does anyone know one that isn't naughty?

Callistemon21 Tue 05-Jul-22 18:04:09

We know a couple of lovely Denis's

They're not little boys, though; one is in his 80s, another in his 60s.
