I’m a lorry driver and sleep in the cab all week. AMA
Do you make your cab look from the outside as if it were a man's cab so as not to draw attention that there is a woman in the cab?
On the inside, is it personalised with your own stuff or is it standard stuff.
Do you always have the same vehicle or are they pooled?
I am thinking of that I read about the wives of military men who live in married quarters but move from base to base. Apparently some (many? all?) have a suitcase of personalisation stuff so that when they move in they can quickly turn the standard layout into their familiar personalised home.
At the moment I am an agency driver, so don’t have the same vehicle every time. It’s a bit of a pain because I have to take absolutely everything out, and into another vehicle every time I change. As I’m usually using someone else’s regular cab, I try not to change anything so that I don’t make it awkward for the normal driver. When I’ve had my own assigned vehicle, it doesn’t look any different to a man’s cab - I don’t have frilly pink curtains or my name in the window
. I don’t tend to clutter the cab up with stuff I don’t need - it just takes up space.
I have bags packed ready to go, and make any cab my own. Bedding/camping gas stove and kettle/mug/cutlery/coffee making stuff/food/toiletries/spare bulbs/gloves/ratchets/phone/iPad and chargers/clothes etc etc it fills about 5 holdalls and takes a good 45mins to get everything in and the bed made.
Whether you get your own vehicle depends on the employer. Sometimes yes, but often they are used by other drivers on your days off. As an agency bod I’m cab-hopping all the time. That’s one of the down sides that you have to accept. If you get a stinky drivers cab it can be a bit uncomfortable! And tight for space if they’ve left all their own gear in there too.
