Hello! smile
Just for a bit of a sunny Saturday chat.

As you probably know, Mumsnet, Reddit and other sites have ‘AMA’s.
(See above - the squid is ‘just because’; don’t worry).

As of just now, I see that Mumsnet have on the go

‘My DH was a member of a cult: AMA’

‘I was on Dragon’s Den: AMA’

‘I was born deaf: AMA’

You get the picture.

My own personal (lighthearted) favourite was from a few years back:

‘I’m your MIL: AMA’

I wanted to do an AMA for a while, but couldn’t think of anything about me that was of much interest; until I landed on my ‘Owl Story’ (which I wheel out at every opportunity).

So, what would your AMA be?
And are we allowed to AYA (please)?

Thank you! sunshine

I’m a lorry driver and sleep in the cab all week. AMA

Has anyone ever tried to get into your cab when you're in your bunk and locked up for the night? ?

The only hassle I sometimes get, is a knock on the door from sex workers. And quite recently I had a full tank of diesel (400 litres) stolen in a lay-by.

This must be the most interesting thread we’ve have had for I don’t know how long.
So many fascinating stories on here.
There’s no way I can compete but I am so enjoying reading all these totally unexpected revelations.

What a great idea this was Fanny.

Do you make your cab look from the outside as if it were a man's cab so as not to draw attention that there is a woman in the cab?

On the inside, is it personalised with your own stuff or is it standard stuff.

Do you always have the same vehicle or are they pooled?

I am thinking of that I read about the wives of military men who live in married quarters but move from base to base. Apparently some (many? all?) have a suitcase of personalisation stuff so that when they move in they can quickly turn the standard layout into their familiar personalised home.

Dame Diana Rigg shook my hand when I was about 16. It was like a wet fish ? AMA

What were the circumstances that she shook your hand please?

At the moment I am an agency driver, so don’t have the same vehicle every time. It’s a bit of a pain because I have to take absolutely everything out, and into another vehicle every time I change. As I’m usually using someone else’s regular cab, I try not to change anything so that I don’t make it awkward for the normal driver. When I’ve had my own assigned vehicle, it doesn’t look any different to a man’s cab - I don’t have frilly pink curtains or my name in the window grin. I don’t tend to clutter the cab up with stuff I don’t need - it just takes up space.

I have bags packed ready to go, and make any cab my own. Bedding/camping gas stove and kettle/mug/cutlery/coffee making stuff/food/toiletries/spare bulbs/gloves/ratchets/phone/iPad and chargers/clothes etc etc it fills about 5 holdalls and takes a good 45mins to get everything in and the bed made.

Whether you get your own vehicle depends on the employer. Sometimes yes, but often they are used by other drivers on your days off. As an agency bod I’m cab-hopping all the time. That’s one of the down sides that you have to accept. If you get a stinky drivers cab it can be a bit uncomfortable! And tight for space if they’ve left all their own gear in there too.

kittylester Sun 10-Jul-22 15:32:42

Crikey, kate, did you blush, simper, come over all unnecessary?

Kate1949 Sun 10-Jul-22 15:37:13

Neither kitty. He was never my cup of tea. I went to see him with a school friend as no one would go with her.
He was in the box office after the show signing autographs. Another friend had asked me to get his autograph for her if I got the chance. So I got my autograph and asked for another. Hence I was 'a bit of a one'.

StarDreamer. I lived in Stratford upon Avon from 11 - 25 and Dame D R was performing at the theatre. She frequented the Dirty Duck pub and I was there with my dad, who knew a lot of the theatre folk through his work, hence the introduction.

Some of the theatre folk came round to our house for drinks such as Sian Phillips who was married to Peter O’Toole. I was stage struck. ?

Kate1949 Sun 10-Jul-22 16:33:40

How exciting NanKate

MrsKen33 Sun 10-Jul-22 16:35:33

Melvyn Bragg gave me my BA certificate. He said I had a beautiful name. Flatterer?

NanKate Sun 10-Jul-22 16:36:36

Yes *Kate1949’ I was in my element. I’m still an avid theatre goer.

welbeck Sun 10-Jul-22 16:39:49

NanKate, did you ever meet Eileen Atkins or Julian Glover during that period ?
or perhaps they were before your time at Stratford.

StarDreamer Sun 10-Jul-22 16:41:38

Thank you, NanKate.

I used to wonder who Eileen Atkins was, because when Upstairs, Downstars was on, it used to have produced by Sagitta Productions in association with Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins, and Jean Marsh played the role of Rose, but Eileen Atkins was not in it.

Eileen Atkins was going to play the role of Sarah, but in the event did not due to other commitments.
