Isn’t it?
It’s 27 degree in my bedroom with two fans on.
My bedroom seems to have its own microclimate…

Tell me about your Dyson fan please Maw
I’ve mulled over them for years.
I’ve read mixed reviews.
The fans that I’ve got are absolutely brilliant (they have to be) but they are far from silent.
Is yours a hot and cold one, or just cold?
If I did get one I’d get it from QVC so I could send it back if need be…

I got a Honeywell fan thru Amazon last week before all this kicked off. Nowhere near as expensive as Dyson and virtually silent. No need to pay his outrageous prices.

We bought a cheapie Lidl tower fan last year and so far it has been most effective and quieter than the traditional fan we have upstairs.

Fanny Cornforth we bought two of the Honeywell fans - they are excellent.

I bit the bullet and bought a portable air conditioner last week, it's been a lifesaver after the last few weeks. Apart from that I keep the windows closed in my bedroom and have a blackout cover on them (it's one made to keep toddlers' rooms dark and has suckers to attach it to the window!).
My first child was born in 1976 just before the heat started. People say that there have been hotter years but I'm not convinced.

I should add that the AC is loud, even on its lowest setting but I really don't care...

Easiest way to stay cool in bed at no cost (surely fans ramp up your electricity bill!) is to part fill a "hot" water bottle and then put it in the freezer until bedtime. Take it out and wrap it in a towel (unless you're OK with being a bit damp in bed) and you have the reverse of snuggling a hottie in winter. Works for me!

I live in Spain, From June - Sept the temps are normally 28-38 celsius--Im stunned at the workers in UK wanting to stop work! People in hotter countries just have to get on with it !

But in hotter countries many offices and shops have air conditioning, and many countries close down during the hotter hours of the day. Many buildings are also built with heat in mind, whereas here we worry mainly about the rain and cold.

27 in my bedroom last night but thankfully managed some sleep probably because worn out with hardly any sleep at all over last 3 nights. Live in countryside and can't open windows in evening as too many bats flying around.

We have a Dyson tower fan and think it's great, not totally silent but nothing like a normal fan - and very effective but not everyone can risk the electric bills. My daughter lives off grid in rural Spain, the days often get around 40c in the summer and not much cooler at night, they have no mains electricity just solar power - which of course is plentiful - but not enough to power fans through the night. The local village does have pools open in July and August so they work on their farm from about 5 - 10 am then take the kids down to the pool area, which has lots of trees for shade. Work continues from about 7 - 10pm and they go to bed covered in wet cloths. She was born in January 1976, my first baby, wonder if the heatwave prepared her for her future life??

I do feel sorry for you all.

As far as I am concerned it is never too hot to eat, sleep, work etc. but often too cold or wet to do so.

It takes all sorts, doesn't it?

'76 I remember well.Hosepipe ban so no paddling pools allowed to cool off in for children. Can remember allowing the 3" bathwater from kids' bath to cool and next day scooping some out and trying to put into a paddling pool or water vegetables in garden. We had a downstairs bathroom so relatively easy. Cooking food in oven overnight so wouldn't have to have much heat in the kitchen daytime. No microwave! Wasn't there a petrol shortage too. Have coupons somewhere in memorabilia. We didn't bathe or shower as often so that wasn't such a big loss as it would be nowadays with a water shortage. There were no bottles of water everything came from the tap. How did we survive without today's regulation water bottle stuck to our hands?

Lizzie44 Wed 13-Jul-22 15:20:10

Fill a hot water bottle (or two or three) with ice cubes and place them in the bed before bedtime. The sheets are lovely and cool to get into and stay cool long enough to get off to sleep.

Don't feel sorry for me!
I rarely lose my appetite (unfortuately) unless I'm ill and I slept just fine. Unfortunately an injury is preventing me from doing much.

Was it 76 when Elvis died?
We were on holiday in cornwall.

1977. Our friend remembers it very well as it was his 21st birthday.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 15:39:30

Thank you.
It's all merged into one these days. smile

I can remember 1976 very well. I was eleven at the time. We were told that the reservoirs would take years to refill but, in true British fashion, it started to rain at the end of August and carried on raining for the next few months. It was one of the wettest Autumns on record and the reservoirs were back to normal by Christmas!

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 15:43:11

I was just about to ask how it ended.
I can't seem to remember.

MawtheMerrier Wed 13-Jul-22 15:43:12

I know Urmston will have posted this already on the GM thread, but in case anybody didn’t see it….gringringrin

Oh well! Here I am!

TanaMa Wed 13-Jul-22 16:35:41

Luckily the thick stone walls keep my house reasonably cool but the windows are open and blinds closed.
Kitchen is cool but keep the fan going for my two Boxers who find the hot weather very troublesome. They have cool jackets and cool mats as well.
I live out in the country surrounded by fields and woods and have noticed a lack of butterflies and moths, even with many of their favourite plants in and around. Also for the second year running a lot less swallows nesting in the barns and stables, very worrying. I do have bats in one of the barns but was sad to find a little dead one outside my door yesterday morning.

Jaxjacky Wed 13-Jul-22 16:49:29

I’ve posted this on another thread, July last year from 17th-24th was pretty warm too, four days at 31, that’s here in S Hants.

Wonder if there was a similar thread then.

JenniferEccles Wed 13-Jul-22 16:53:33

I am counting the days until it cools down a bit although the worst is to come this weekend and early next week, so we are told.
I have taken on board the frozen towel tip and it does help.
Previous years I thought to pop a damp face flannel in the freezer before bed and that helps as does a cool shower at bedtime.

I really struggle to understand how anyone can love this hot weather but we are all different of course.
I always sleep much better in the winter.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Jul-22 16:54:17

I remember a thread being made just for people to moan about the heat at one point.
I can't remember when that was, either, though. smile
I just know i appreciated it, because i hate hot weather.

I would love to see a fox in the garden. I've only ever seen one - in a field in France.

Disco has ended thankfully. Must try to sleep.
Quiet day here tomorrow. The place will be deserted as most people head to parades. Everything except petrol stations closed.

You wouldn't if you trod in its dump whilst putting washing out yukkity yuk yuk!!!! Filthy vermin, townies should stop encouraging them with unwrapped food waste etc. They belong well away from us
