I've been browsing the forums and you seem a nice bunch, so thought I would introduce myself.

I'm 61 (how did that happen?) and live in London with my partner of 20+ years and a daft black cat. My two sons, now in their 30s, live nearby. No grandchildren, but hopefully that doesn't exclude me from being here!

I work in the City as an Office Manager which I really enjoy and I'm hoping will see me out until retirement. I don't feel ready to stop working just yet. smile

Anyway, hello all! Sho.

Hi there, Sloshana and welcome. I pop in now and again. I was working in London for the. ‘76 heatwave so I’m grateful to be back home in the Channel Islands this time. A lot more opportunities for cooling down.

Aveline

Hello. We were feeling sorry for people who work in offices in London in this heat. The tube must be unbearable! Glad you enjoy your work though. Have a good day.

Office? Air con? Tube ? What are these alien things you speak of?.do you hail from another place where there are jobs and transport and.....power wasted on cooling machines? We in the northern wastelands have only beautiful countryside a step away from our city places, ambient weather and...best of all....genuinely funny wkd sense of humour ....and strangers who will speak to each other in the marketplace.....

Yo! Sho. Ready to waste more time than you want reading all the wonderful reams of what? Exactly on here! Welcome Indeedy.

Hi Shysal, how, what or where do I find Soops kitchen please?
Thank you!

Supergranuation Wed 13-Jul-22 17:41:53

Welcome Sho, Gransnet is lovely site full of lovely people, you will soon be hooked! ?

Supergranuation Wed 13-Jul-22 17:50:02

Sorry! I’ve just found Soops kitchen but I’m afraid I don’t get it!
Is it just me? ?

welbeck Wed 13-Jul-22 17:52:47

i couldn't understand it either; when i first joined, i looked around, but assumed it was something to do with recipes/cooking, so i didn't stay.
so no, it's not just you.

Charleygirl5 Wed 13-Jul-22 17:58:27

Supergranuation I have been with soop's kitchen almost since it started and I "know" quite a few of the contributors and have also met a few in London for coffee or lunch. Perhaps if you stay in the wings and read for a few days you may see how it unravels. We do say daft things such as there is shortbread in the kitchen for all to try but people are really kind and sympathetic and some have been really ill, including soop who runs it.

I was supposed to be meeting another GN at Oxford Street on Friday but I could not tolerate buses and tubes in this heat so we have postponed it. The joys of retirement.

Welcome anybody who is new.

Supergranuation Wed 13-Jul-22 18:30:21

Thanks Wellbeck, it’s good to know it’s not just me! Thanks also to Charliegirl for trying to explain but I’m even more confused now! I’m assuming it’s a fantasy kitchen with fantasy food which can sometimes make you ill? Anyway, I’ll stick around for a bit then if I still don’t get it I’ll leave it to more likeminded people! For those of you who enjoy, keep enjoying! ?

soop's kitchen? imagine someone has opened up their (huge) kitchen. probably an aga, def the back door left open, and a big notice on the gate saying come on in. when you go in there are several sqishy sofas to sit on and people chatting away. you can join in the chat or just earwig. (listen in.) if you "take" a plate of brownies you'll be loved for life, but someone might make you a cup of tea or direct you to a glass of wine, or even suggest you take a wander in the garden to peruse the roses.
so. well. it's purely imagination of course. if it sounds like a big waste of time then there you have it. if it sounds like a friendly an comforting thing to do with a spare few minutes or more, then head right in.

Maggierose Wed 13-Jul-22 19:17:28

Hi Shosana, I live in London too but came down to a friend’s house in Whitstable to escape the heatwave. After a few lovely days I felt a bit rough and tested positive for Covid.

Supergranuation Wed 13-Jul-22 19:31:23

Thanks riete, I have to say it's growing on me so you'll probably see me there quite often. I've got a fruit cake in the oven as we speak so I'll probably bring it with me ?

Skyblue2 Wed 13-Jul-22 21:09:38

Hello Shoshone - I am quite a newbie too and have really enjoyed the wit and wisdom on here. I am now the grand old age of 63 and also wondering how it happened so quickly! Welcome

Shoshana Wed 13-Jul-22 22:03:36

Oh no, Maggierose, I hope you only have a mild case. I have somehow avoided catching covid so far, but I'm sure it will happen one day.

More welcomes, thank you! I had a busy day at work, and for a while forgot how hot it was outside. It felt like I'd walked into an oven when I left!

riete Wed 13-Jul-22 22:45:58

ooh, i can smell that fruitcake from here supergranuation. don't be offended if some of our northerners plonk a slice of cheese on top before munching. and if you're adventurous you might try it yourself. seems to me one of the easier north:south dividing lines!

Hi. Welcome to the GNET.

welbeck Thu 14-Jul-22 23:19:24

riete,
that sounds like raiding the cupboard type food, aka standard student fare; i'm all for it, why not.

riete Thu 14-Jul-22 23:56:41

haha welbeck, you're absolutely right, i hadn't thought of it that way.
i can remember putting slices of cheese hot x buns (not so dissimilar, actually.
maybe someone should start a thread on "the hunt for something that doesn't go well with a slice of cheese"? sunshine

hi shoshana,
how're you doing?
and do we pass muster? shamrock
