Is this a thing now in impoverished Britain

I’m sitting on my patio just thinking about how dull the slabs are.
The Times has come to my rescue. Outdoor rugs!! Who knew they were a thing? The one I like is only £640.78. I don’t think it’s big enough though, I’ll have to have 2.

We have one £8 for the ground outside motorhome.

I noticed a stack of them in the plant section in Tesco yesterday. Large size approx 8x6ft. They were reduced to £20 but I didn’t see any takers.

thank you for this information, we will look in our local Tesco.
a colourful mat will certainly improve the look of our small patio area and be comfortable for the dog too.

Could use some of that fake grass, too. I think it is fairly cheap.

I'd pay £10 for a cold hosing down today tbh, will i get vilified too? grin

Not at all, I'd be joining you!

Whatever you do don’t talk about hosing down an outdoor rug or mat or you will get vilified by some as happened on another thread !

Hi Zoejory and JaneJudge, if you'd care to step onto my doormat, I could hose you down and the run off would wash my mat and then run off onto my plants.... No need for you to pay anything, as I would be using the same amount of water, nothing extra.

getting back to the OP, people are allowed to spend their money on whatever they wish.

twinnytwin Sat 13-Aug-22 13:12:51

What a shame that the OP started a light hearted thread that has been taken over by righteous judgmental few. I took her comment to be tongue in cheek, especially due to the title of her thread. No wonder many of us don't bother to start threads or comment.

Baggytrazzas Sat 13-Aug-22 14:05:38

PamelaJ1, if I lived in an area that was very dry or had a large covered balcony for example, I would love an outdoor rug.

If I was asked to help anyone decide on what to buy, I'd always suggest buying the best quality that you could afford at the time, and then enjoy it. I think its the overall value that matters most rather than only the initial price.

I hope you find something lovely for your garden. smile

Baggytrazzas Pamela said it was mind-boggling.

Yes I read that comment.

Joseanne Sat 13-Aug-22 14:18:11

Yes, Prentice, dogs can be very fussy and a nice mat makes the patio more comfortable for them. I sometimes use cut off pieces from carpets and place them under the parasol so he gets the message. (He'll be demanding an ice cream next!)

I bought one last year under £100, round grey Aztec type print. Completely waterproof, yes you can hose down too, but tbh didn't need to last year.
Recommended it, makes the floor less hot especially when GC are out running around.

Nandalot Sat 13-Aug-22 14:28:53

My eyes are playing up today, PamelaJ1. I read that you were sitting on your piano.

PamelaJ1 Sat 13-Aug-22 16:05:09

nandalot I am still out here but I’ve got the radio on. No tinkling of the keys in this garden I’m afraid.

Thank you twinnytwin , it was tongue in cheek , perhaps there should be an emoji to indicate that?

I do own up to typing mind boggling. I agree that anyone is entitled to buy whatever they like as long as I am entitled to a bit of boggling if I like. ? couldn’t see a suitable emoji so decided to show you all how I’m feeling at the moment.

nadateturbe Sat 13-Aug-22 17:18:50

I think we're all entitled to a bit of boggling. When I see someone wearing a dress that cost thousands of pounds I boggle.
I'm sure lots of us do.

Baggytrazzas Sat 13-Aug-22 17:30:24

PamelaJ1 - did you buy one? ( or two) ? and maybe a small piano to finish it all off nicely? wink

Not for dogs. It heats up terribly in the sun. My daughter got an offset of it for her dog after he had an op which left him dragging his legs for a while. He was scraping them on the flags and hurting himself. This worked well until the warm weather (and not the heat of this summer) when the 'grass' got so hot he couldn't sit on it. She got rid of it and bought an outdoor rug instead.

We probably all buy things that make other people think Why?

Lolee Mon 15-Aug-22 12:00:26

I've been using (inexpensive) outdoor rugs over concrete slabs in my courtyard for the last four years. Worth their weight in gold ?

Grantanow Mon 15-Aug-22 12:00:41

I prefer our Jurassic coast slabs!

You're reading the wrong comics? I bought an outdoor patio rug made from recycled plastic from India (Amazon) 2 years ago, and its the best thing I've got for my dingey patio! Cost shy of £40 andlooks dead exotic!! Treat yourself they're great soft to walk on in bare feet and cheery in depths of winter too

Just more landfill! (Cynical? Moi?)

This may be useful for preventing falls on hard concrete during frosty weather. What do you think?

Not for me- I can trip over a matchstick

There will always be the poorer and the better off among us. The wealthier are the consumers which ultimately drive the economy. That being said, there should be enough for ALL to have a decent standard of living which the government elected by the people should ensure. I would be more concerned about the environmental impact of plastic rather than a moral debate here! Surely there must be some outdoor rugs made of recycled materials which could again be recycled? After all, we have clothes made of recycled plastics, don’t we? I would say to the OP, enjoy your rug and your patio! I sadly no longer have a garden, but fondly remember the joy and peace mine used to bring me! With all the concern about mental health at the moment, it is something to be treasured!

Most of these mats are made from recycled plastic and will probably be recycled again.
