Is this a thing now in impoverished Britain

I’m sitting on my patio just thinking about how dull the slabs are.
The Times has come to my rescue. Outdoor rugs!! Who knew they were a thing? The one I like is only £640.78. I don’t think it’s big enough though, I’ll have to have 2.

We're all entitled to our views GrannyGravy13.
I like nice things too.
But I believe it's wrong to spend an obscene amount on anything. And no one will persuade me otherwise.

I did not say that you were not entitled to your view nadateturbe

We are all different, like different things, spend on different commodities.

If we were all the same the world would be a very boring, bland and dreary place.

Do other people live in gardens where birds don’t poo? On everything! Especially pigeons….

Thank you for the info, PamelaJ1 Our patio had to be repointed and cleaned. Unfortunately the smooth surface has been left like coarse sandpaper, which isn't great for bare feet of any age. I'll see if I can track down an outdoor mat to make life more pleasant. ?

PamelaJ1 Fri 12-Aug-22 19:30:31

nell unless you have a very small patio it may cost lots of £££.?

All being different does not mean that we do not care for others.

I am and I imagine lots of posters on GN do not feel the need to tell all of their charitable works/ donations /philanthropy.

People shouldn't need crumbs from the tables of those who get a feel good buzz from charitable works, donations and philanthropy.

Neither should folks be judged on how they spend their money …

Grannynannywanny Fri 12-Aug-22 20:51:49

I noticed a stack of them in the plant section in Tesco yesterday. Large size approx 8x6ft. They were reduced to £20 but I didn’t see any takers.

nadateturbe Fri 12-Aug-22 20:53:54

I beg to differ on that GrannyGravy13.

RichmondPark1 Fri 12-Aug-22 21:04:53

I don't think people should be judged on what they spend their money on, but I do think what is available to buy should have more restrictions on. An example is the plastic egg in the Kinder eggs...how much rubbish like that is made that has no real use? Rugs for outside? Made of plastic? Plastic ivy? We've managed for thousands of years without them, should we be making them now when we are all trying to cut down on plastic?

Nannagarra Fri 12-Aug-22 21:26:22

Our financial situations and inclination to help others are unique, up to us to reveal and, for me, private.
I cannot wait to add a rug to the furniture, cushions, table, table cloth, cloth clips, napkins, cutlery, plates, glasses, citronella candles and parasol. NOT.
Nuff’s enough.
For more than a month I’ve been having an enormous clear out and I haven’t finished yet by a long chalk. The less I have, the less I have to look after and clean. My DSs are hugely supporting me, not so their father!

M0nica Fri 12-Aug-22 22:46:37

Richmond1 we managed for thousand s of years with out plastic protective clothing in hospitals, disposable needles, inside baathrooms and centralheating. that is no reason from stopping us have them now.

Faberge eggs are very beautiful, but totally useless.

People shouldn't need crumbs from the tables of those who get a feel good buzz from charitable works, donations and philanthropy.

What a nasty tjing to say, to suggest that those who are fortunate and do all they can to help others less fortunate do it because they '^get a feel good buzz^

How do you know that is why they do it. Envy people when they have more money than you and then dis them, when they use it to help other people. Contemptible.

I had hoped my post would put us back on track. Let’s confine it to the desire for garden rugs and be peaceful.

True, but what Richmond says is still true.

Not everyone who helps does it to get a feel good buzz.

Thought I’d send a photo

Either that is the wrong photo or you are mistaken about the price. The ones in the photo are 70, 40 or 29

Perhaps my eyesight’s going, but none of those cost £640?

Sorry Shirley, cut the top off.

Pamela explained that she chopped the top of the pic off…

I agree that ostentatious living will be very bad taste, if it's not already in bad taste.

If a person/s have earned their money legitimate and paid the approval taxes it is down to them how/what they spend it on.

I do not feel the need to judge them.

Caleo Sat 13-Aug-22 10:53:11

I applaud your feelings, GrannyG . Me, I don't like show-offs.

Those who can afford things, should buy. Locally if possible to keep the economy moving.

M0nica You have misquoted me here. I didn't write the 'crumbs from the tables' post so if your contempt was aimed at me it was misplaced.

My actual post wasn't saying we shouldn't have useless things if they benefit us or make us happy, just that there should be some balance and proportion applied based on how this impacts on the environment. Faberge eggs were not made with the intention that they will go to landfill in a year or two. Needles, heating and PPE have huge benefit to humanity and so deliver more than they take. Plastic garden rugs not so much. If people want them, so be it, but there is a cost to the earth that can't be measured in money.

I have worked as a gardener and am aware of how plastic in gardens breaks down overtime and gets into the soil. I am committed in my day to day life to removing plastic from the environment. I spend time each day picking up the disposable tat that people discard and that includes bits of plastic garden flowers/toys/furniture which get into the soil and waterways and end up on our beaches.
