Sometimes thinking is so muddled you can’t really go anywhere with it.
Good Morning Monday 3rd August 2026
Apologies to all the nice ladies called Karen but today we met a 'Karen'.
We went to a lunchtime concert at Beverley Minster. It was the Berkshire Youth Symphony Orchestra and, if you ever get the chance, I can heartily recommend you go to see them.
DH was using his phone to record some of the music to send to a friend in South Africa who loves classical music. He wasn't the only person recording but Karen seemed to take offence to him alone. Half way through the concert she stormed up behind him and shouted (over the music) that he had ruined the concert for her because she couldn't see when he was recording. Now the layout was such that, unless you were on the first row, you wouldn't be able to see the orchestra anyway but apparently her lack of view was DH's fault. He hadn't done anything to affect her hearing of the music. After she shouted, and without giving him chance to reply, she stormed off and left the Minster. We, and people around us, burst out laughing.
The daft thing was that if she had simply told DH that she found his phone annoying because it was in her eyeline, he would have apologised and recorded from another position. Then she wouldn't have had to storm out and miss the second half of what was an incredibly good concert.
Sometimes thinking is so muddled you can’t really go anywhere with it.
Word twisting
I have actually reported this thread, although I hear that does little good these days, hopefully HQ will get around to it.
But obviously you guys carry on because mobbing > a dignified approach

I’m not quite sure why you are reporting the thread
Ah well, shut down the thread one way or another.
Any way the wind blows……??
OP just took a rather popular meme younger people are using constantly for whatever reason
Doesn’t make it right.
It’s a lazy, judgemental, hurtful, disrespectful “meme” which started in the US.
Doesn’t mean that either a) it’s acceptable or b) we have to follow suit . Or indeed that anybody has to “suck it up” to use another awful turn of phrase popular among a certain age group.
It is frankly indefensible so I don’t know why you hope to achieve by trying to defend it.

There has been some interesting research on the ‘Karen’ issue.
One researcher summed it up as someone who moves through the world prepared to fight a faceless conglomerate of lesser-than people who won't give her what she wants and feels she deserves.
Food for thought.
This contradicts your previous post where you complain about people on here being unkind. Research on the 'Karen' issue is not interesting it is insulting our intelligence. Name calling is a childish pursuit and adults should know better.
Hi Parsley
I think research is important. It provides insights, shares information and lets us develop our thinking.
I agree Maw. It’s nasty. OP wouldn’t have posted this if she were called Karen. Why does anyone think this is acceptable?
the lovely name "Karen" has been hijacked to describe a selfish, white, middle aged woman
Does that mean that a selfish, black, middle aged woman would be called something else?
Good question biglouis, maybe a younger person will be along shortly to inform us.
Oh yes, it’s part of the “white trash” prejudice.
I’m not a younger person though

I don't think it's acceptable, but I think the point has been well made and there's no need to keep bashing the OP. She probably feels awful.
it sounds a deeply unpleasant experience whether she was called Karen or not
The thread would have probably died a death if posters hadn’t taken up cudgels to defend the use of ‘Karen’ as a shorthand for a unpleasant stereotype.
I think most people are protesting about the use of personal names as insults rather than bashing the OP.
And wanting to refute the claims that this type of name calling is nothing much to get upset about.

As if, this is not "research" but the perpetuating of a vicious prejudice, with no evidence of information or even a valid thought process.
Would you grant equal weight to similarly spurious research into relative intelligence of different racial heritages? Or the perceived (by some men) of women's relative inability to park in a restricted space? Of course not - just calling something "research" does not confer validity.
To be honest I wasn’t interested in reading the rest of the post after reading about a Karen!
OP just took a rather popular meme younger people are using constantly for whatever reason.
The term ‘gay’ was also a popular meme amongst young folk not so long ago. Is it okay if older women start using it as well? Thought not…

Maw, I haven’t actually expressed any opinions. ?

Good heavens…..reported the thread ?a bit OTT. Could all have been avoided with a well meant apology. Not just the first throwaway sentence.
Reporting and accusations of ganging up has become a bit of an epidemic on GN. ??

Ok, I’m out.
Enid, you say you haven’t expressed any opinions but your posts don’t support that
It seems vampire hasn’t asked for her OP to be removed. Quite why VioletSky believes it’s her job to attempt to get it taken down I’m not sure. It’s clear it hasn’t gone the way the OP hoped but that’s the way of discussions
I love the speaking about people as if they aren't right here
Lol

What absolute rubbish.
What kind of researcher would make that conclusion on no evidence whatsoever?
