My first Karen

Apologies to all the nice ladies called Karen but today we met a 'Karen'.

We went to a lunchtime concert at Beverley Minster. It was the Berkshire Youth Symphony Orchestra and, if you ever get the chance, I can heartily recommend you go to see them.

DH was using his phone to record some of the music to send to a friend in South Africa who loves classical music. He wasn't the only person recording but Karen seemed to take offence to him alone. Half way through the concert she stormed up behind him and shouted (over the music) that he had ruined the concert for her because she couldn't see when he was recording. Now the layout was such that, unless you were on the first row, you wouldn't be able to see the orchestra anyway but apparently her lack of view was DH's fault. He hadn't done anything to affect her hearing of the music. After she shouted, and without giving him chance to reply, she stormed off and left the Minster. We, and people around us, burst out laughing.

The daft thing was that if she had simply told DH that she found his phone annoying because it was in her eyeline, he would have apologised and recorded from another position. Then she wouldn't have had to storm out and miss the second half of what was an incredibly good concert.

I love that book

"Dopey Dora", "Sad sack Sam" "Silly Billy", Negative Nellie" "Plain Jane" and a multitude of other such sayings have been around for years. I'm sure many complaining about using Karen in a negative manner would have used some of these over the years. Only difference was that we did not have social media.

What an offensive post. The OP should be ashamed of herself.

No actually Spice I have not used any of the terms you mention and nor would I use Karen. It is a very pretty name which has become maligned.
On another note I hate it when someone has their phone on during a concert. The light is very distracting.

I agree, dragonfly46. It seems to be an increasingly common phenomenon. A few years ago, the person in front of me at an amateur performance of a musical whooped whenever her friend appeared then filmed that scene. I was delighted when the usher had a quiet word with the woman!

We’re off to see Bob Dylan later this year. Apparently he doesn’t want anyone using mobiles in any way during his performances, so ours will be placed in some sort of lockable pouch throughout. I’m intrigued to see how this will work, but am more than happy to know that we won’t be distracted.

Now if Bob could just insist on nobody doing the bar/toilet/bar/toilet shuffle during the gig….

Enjoy Bob Dylan! Do report back on what he was like? Mr Dog and I are great fans.

Bad manners all around.
A concert is to listen to or watch not photograph and very distracting so you and your DH were at fault.
Bad manners from the woman she should have quietly approached someone in charge and asked your DH and anyone else using a phone to switch off.
Bad manners from her getting up and making an exhibition of herself.
A double whammy from you calling her a Karen.
So you are not exactly innocent, are you? Yet you are wanting backing for your actions maybe you feel slightly shame-faced?
Bad manners from the rest of the audience and yourselves laughing at her.sad

Enjoy the concertMaggieMaybe although if he sings the way he did at the last outing I saw, you'd be hard pressed to record anything but mumbling!?
Not a criticism, just a jokey observation.

? Yes, I’ve heard he can be a bit hit and miss performing live (DH saw him in his heyday and says he always was).

We’re hoping to catch him on a good day.

I’ll let you know how it goes, Doodle.

I saw him at the Manchester concert in the 60’s then at Woodstock/uk . He was good. I wouldn’t go now but have a great time maggie

It’s unusual for recording to be allowed for a classical concert.
Usually an announcement is made at the beginning to turn all phones off.
Re the name Karen, I received a birthday card from my brother in law and his wife. She is called Karen, but had given herself a new name I didn’t recognise.
Obviously fed up with the connotations.

That's a shame hollysteers
