My daughter has beta thalassaemia trait (inherited from her Middle Eastern father) and although blood tests show she is anaemic, and she has the symptoms associated with that, she should not have iron infusions/tablets because repeated intervention with iron could cause organ damage. Despite us knowing this many doctors look at her test results and prescribe iron medication. During her pregnancies it was a real fight to get her blood transfusions rather than iron infusions.

A really great post, thank you, and I would also like to thank all the GNs who have offered advice on various worries I've posted about. There are some really sensible and informative posts on here - I particularly like Maw's comments on posts, and also the sense of humour of many posts.
Glad to hear that you didn't have to go through your ordeal Aussiegran!

Yes, Spice101, it’s been the coldest winter I can remember.
I won’t be so chilled out tomorrow. Having iron infusion and they can never find a decent vein. Not looking forward to half hour of pain. Somebody tell me to stop being a wimp, please? There are others far worse off, I know, but all that poking and stabbing really hurts doesn’t it. Sorry for complaining.

I suppose a few "doses" of sweet sherry beforehand is out of the question?? Stay strong it's doing you good. And glug after!

I will express my thanks to the wide range of people we have on GN from all kinds of backgrounds, countries and family circumstances.

It is a constant reminder to me of how difficult many people's lives are, and how complicated the siruations they have to deal with, and how incredibly well they manage.

And with very few exceptions, people behave courteously towards people they profoundly disagree with.

I have also made several good personal friends, as well as being part of what of the group that meet up every few months in Oxford (we are not a bit cliquey and always welcome new faces.

I agree, there are Growing0ldDisgracefully, they can be kind, supportive, helpful and a great source of information.

However, there are also those who are so permanently outraged it is difficult to take them seriously.

I tell myself "Calm down, dear, it's only virtual forum!"

Hello, I’m another Aussie who enjoys being part of the Gransnet community. What a lifesaver during the lockdowns to start the day reading all the UK posts. Thanks everyone. First time poster, longer time reader ?

Hi to a fellow Aussie
I love Gransnet too
It reminds me of my country of birth
Born in Kensington during an air raid in WW2 but came to Aussieland in 87
So many things I miss about UK But so many things to be grateful for living here
Winter has been extra harsh this year & another wet Summer forecast
But al least that means less bushfires !
