Calendargirl

Sorry, I digressed into mornings.

Yes, nights are definitely ‘drawing in’.

Rather than under it MissAdventure ? Visualising your post amused me thinking of you ? ?

I am in Essex and I’m still hot in the evenings and having the fan on!

Edith81 Sat 03-Sept-22 11:46:48

I can’t stand the thought of all that clobber to keep warm in winter. I hate being cold so I enjoyed this year’s summer. Already got cosy socks and throw over in the evening and won’t be long before the hot water bottle gets used.

Quite! I woke really early on 31 August and couldn't get back to sleep , then realised I was too cold! I've been sleeping with just a cotton sheet and very light bed throw all summer and it was a bit of an odd sensation to pull my quilt over myself! It felt comforting and light yet I went off for another 2hours! It's not lasted I'm back to sheet only but it's definitely got a very cool base to the morning air in last week or so. Tbh I'm a bit fed up of wearing sleeveless stuff and wobbling around bare legged! I'm no beach babe( says who?!) So I still cover up to nip to shops! I find myself dying to change wardrobe over and start wearing all the bargains I've picked up over the last 9months when my old gear had a severe cull long overdue. Gone are the short fitted tees /my last skirt!/brights. In are classy muted shades, lots of cover all woollen midi tunics /dresses to wear with boots and legwarmers(yes, still a fan after 51years!!) I also have acquired a strategic heavy curtain to divide my expansive living area as I don't intend to use as much heating as usual either. all sounds like war is coming......war on want is the phrase I think for all of us mere mortals..... But it also feels like I know how to manage and will be remembering all the hacks and tips we grew up with to survive not having today's luxuries! One set of fairy lights, here we come!

polnan Sat 03-Sept-22 12:21:54

ok. so pleased to see this thread, living on my own, I can worry about little things, about wanting to put a throw over my legs in the evening... silly me!

so anyone want to share scented candles? I never seem to be able to find one or some I like,,,

and the new hot water bottles someone , referred to earlier?

It’s definitely autumn here in Shropshire. Just put on a vegetable and barley slow cooker stew for tonight and taken receipt of my new winter coat. My favourite season.

DeeDe Sat 03-Sept-22 12:49:50

Yes it’s arrived early this year …
Weather and the World has gone a bit wonky!

Witzend Sat 03-Sept-22 13:15:03

We still have reasonably summery temps here (outer SW London) and I have yet to dig out winter woollies (just the occasional cotton cardi so far) but I do notice how much earlier it’s getting dark now. I know it’s my imagination, but it does seem earlier than in previous years.

However yesterday I was speaking to my Swedish friend - now in Stockholm after many years in Devon, so well aware of how things could be worse! One thing she was dreading about moving back was the longer, colder winters - and the darker winter days.
When in Devon she used to recommend Swedish friends/family to visit in the spring or autumn, since that’s when they’d experience the greatest difference. I well remember her son and DiL with young children visiting during the Halloween/ Bonfire Night season, and being amazed at the still benign weather, children able to play out with no coats, etc.

I was on holiday this past week in North Coast of N.Ireland and weather was gorgeous, no sign of Autumn, it was like June. I'm now home, it's raining, cooler and was dark before 9pm last night. What a difference a couple of days make.

Callistemon21 Sat 03-Sept-22 13:28:51

It's been lovely this past week but last mpnight was too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping.

nanna8

Still quite cool down but in Melbourne though nice sunshine. Went for a walk with a couple of friends, the wattles are stunning at this time of year.

What are 'wattles' nanna8?

[polnan] Love mandarin/lemon and pink grapefruit by ESCAPE and not very expensive ..reminds me of the very expensive Jo Malone which can no longer afford...some other less expensive brands are airpure and they do a 3 fragrance Romantic Nights (yes live alone too!) which is Jasmine/Lotus Flower and Lavender moments..not too strong ..and always buy a Fresh Linen from Candle Factory...am shopping for more today before they go out of stock grin

Bea65 Sat 03-Sept-22 13:53:37

Alioop lovely pic..where is this in North West Ireland..very scenic and not too busy which is what I love!

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 13:55:59

I have a lovely candle from Aldi.

It smells great, and it's not even been burned yet. smile
I can't remember what 'flavour' it is, though. Something unusual.

Alioop Sat 03-Sept-22 13:57:12

Bea65 that is Portrush, but it gets busy on school holidays that's why we go when they are all back. There's a lovely beach in Portballintrae and we were the only ones on it.

Bea65 Sat 03-Sept-22 13:59:34

MissAdventure you know when you've got a fabulous scented candle when you can smell it before its lit - have my ML and PG sitting on table beside me and its so lovely...

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 14:01:44

I move my candle from room to room, like an air freshener.
smile

Too soon to talk about autumn! I wait until 21 September to think like that, and so far, this weather is suiting me well. This past week I have been away in temperatures of 22-25, which is a bit too hot for me, so today is perfect.
Changing the bed today I am minded to put a warmer duvet on, as until today I have used a one tog, which I bought just in time for the big heatwave.

missdeke Sat 03-Sept-22 14:05:33

Definitely early sunsets lately. The bats have stopped swooping around outside my window in the evenings, I miss them. I hate the passing of summer.

knspol Sat 03-Sept-22 14:06:44

I have always preferred autumn and winter, dark nights and sitting in the front of the fire with DH but this will be my first autumn/winter without DH and the dark nights now seem a bit foreboding, getting quite nervous and it's only just September.

Yes, it's very autumnal already. It's the first day of meteorological autumn tomorrow. The garden is bucking up again with the cooler weather and morning dew. I love the longer evenings and lighting some candles.

I love the longer evenings and lighting some candles.

I'm so with you on that! Very relaxing.

I bought some garden lights that operate like old-fashioned lanterns with 'candles' that flicker, and hang them up around the house. The batteries last for absolutely ages. They turn themselves off after a certain number of hours.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Sept-22 14:15:12

Lovely, Dickens, and very safe too. I have some like that and I also buy basic unscented ones from the supermarket so I don’t worry about ‘cost per evening’. I treat myself to some Winter scented ones from the White Company for Christmas (my husband moans about the smell but I love it).

I sense your sadness and melancholy. It must feel very lonely knspol in the house now? flowers

I hope it doesn't come across as trite - but maybe listening to the radio during the coming long evenings will give you that sense of there being 'someone' there? I only suggest it because it's what my mother did and it gave her some comfort under similar circumstances.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Sept-22 14:25:22

I agree Dickens. And if you don’t already have one, a pet can give great comfort and companionship, though not the same obviously.
