Dark at 8pm..and had throw on legs!

Is it my eyesight or past few nights darkness has fallen around 8pm and feels autumnal ..just not ready for this and also had to put throw on legs..yes damm arthritis ..lit a lovely scented candle to lift my mood..reminder to self...buy more candles

me too Bea65 arthritis means keeping warm so I often have a woolly throw by my side.Getting dark so early too, which is miserable.
after knocking over a candle a few years ago and ruining the carpet, I now have LED ones, which flicker softly.

Still quite cool down but in Melbourne though nice sunshine. Went for a walk with a couple of friends, the wattles are stunning at this time of year.

What are 'wattles' nanna8?

In case nanna8 hasn’t seen this - wattles are the beautiful trees/bushes with yellow fluffy flowers that we call mimosa, a much prettier name. It was my mother’s favourite flower and I always tried to find some for her birthday in February.

Being a hardy Scot, I haven't needed anything extra yet, but I was shopping in Aldi this morning and noticed they had lovely soft cuddly throws for just £4.99, so I picked one up in readiness for when the really cold weather does kick in.

Lovely, Dickens, and very safe too. I have some like that and I also buy basic unscented ones from the supermarket so I don’t worry about ‘cost per evening’. I treat myself to some Winter scented ones from the White Company for Christmas (my husband moans about the smell but I love it).

Oh Dear! - I googled the White Company to just, you know, have a look - created an account and have now spent ££s more than I should on candles and diffusers, including the Oakmoss Signature Candle. And I'm now going back in to look at their clothing range .

Just googled wattles, Apparently its the fleshy bits that are on the top of roosters heads or any other fleshy bits that hang down on birds !!!

But that doesn't sound right. I think its mimosa

Last night not only did I have a woollen throw over me but a hot water bottle as well.

We are on the south coast, so still quite warm here, but it's definitely getting dark earlier than previous years. By 9pm it's dark but still warm enough to sit out on the patio without a cardigan - a bit odd really! And the sunsets over the sea are fabulous.

We have really enjoyed having a proper warm, sunny summer this year but I'm more of an autumn & winter person, I love the misty mornings, the smell of bonfires, watching the trees change colour and gathering the fallen leaves for leaf mould, crisp cold winter days, and of course snuggly winter woollies, hot chocolate and roaring fires. So for me the shortening days just herald the beginning of the next seasonal delights.

And before we know it it will be Spring again.

What are Wattles?

Not familiar with that name here in UK.

I was going to answer but thought I should leave it to nanna8 who is probably asleep.

Wattles are trees, Mimosa, Acacia Pycnantha, native to SE Australia. They have pretty, fluffy yellow flowers (or are they bracts?) in very early spring ie now.

Can’t wait to get the Aga on and my pumpkins out!!

So many people on here talking about how cold they are. Needing a throw /hot water bottle in the evening. I wonder where you are. My family are on holiday in Southwold and it's baking hot

I am in the West Country and just feel the cold, when I went into hospital for an op they put me on a heat pad because I was cold.

Aldom in the Midlands...and yes its looking bleak and grey at the moment with the promise of rain..

So did I ! My minds eye came up with a tent structure using a big throw ?

A friend told me today that she has bought a rather lovely throw that she can plug in. That sounds like the ultimate in comfort to me.
My main complaint about Autumn and Winter, apart from the cold, is the mess my small white dog gets into on walks. He travels close to the ground and comes back two tone. I have promised myself I will get one of those all over coats that go down to his paws.

Thank you Dickens and Germanshepherdsmum, much appreciated. Will try the radio. Can't face another pet, DH wanted another cat but I persuaded him to wait until after the op. and recovery, sadly not to be.

Love this time of year, chutneys and jams to make, cakes to bake and long, low golden light to enjoy. Oh, and cooler.

I in Somerset, still wearing my summer clothes (short sleeved top and skirts), during the day - patio door opened most of the daytime. At night, window still open in bedroom, I wear a sleeveless cotton nightie and only have a sheet to cover me.

Do have to put on (at least tell Alexa to do so) lights much earlier and leaves are falling more than they should at this time, but my living room temperature gauge has not fallen below 20 degrees either night or day (windows still open), am not even thinking about throws and heating at present.

I don't like the earlier dark evenings, it starts me thinking of the long nights and grey days ahead of us for months and months that I find so depressing. I wouldn't mind if we had more of a continental winter...perhaps a good snowfall then clear sunny skies. I don't mind cold, you can put more clothes on but I love to see the sun and a blue sky. DH and I spent nearly 20 years wintering in Spain in our caravan so now he's gone it comes hard to endure British winters again.
