I am having a sleepless night.

I just went into my bathroom and found this beauty in my bath!!!!

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 06:48:49

And I once did the card and glass.
The spider started jumping in the glass, then I realised I couldnt open the door because I was holding a glass, a piece of card, and a pogo jumping spider.
I panicked, wet my pants, and it all ended badly.

Oh blimey MissAsad
The loo roll wad out of the window ploy is foolproof
Are you sure that you couldn’t manage that?

My late husband was chief spider catcher in our house. I've been dreading the "spider in the house" season and formulated a campaign against them, starting with using deterrent sprays and what to do if I find one. The latter involves using the extension hose of the vacuum cleaner.

I'm seriously considering hypnotherapy (on me not the spiders!)
I never used to be so scared of them. My phobia appears to have got worse over the past few years. Might be worth a try. ?

Absolutely sure I could not do it for all the tea in China.

Could I put a jug over it until my neighbour gets up?
That is an option but it would take all my courage.

MissA I’ve got his friend here. I spotted it out of the corner of my eye on the wall beside my chair. My spider catching technique works well. I use an envelope. If you gently touch it with the flap while the envelope is puffed open it will drop off the wall and into the open envelope. Then gently fold over the top and leave it outside with the flap unfolded.

I think the same technique will work in the bath if you can pluck up the courage to do it. Not easy I know if you feel so afraid of them.

Exposure therapy is supposed to be good for arachnophobia and fear of other creatures.

I'm really disappointed in myself, because I've been gradually dealing with spiders, thanks to my trusty racquet.

I immediately take my glasses off if I see a spider, and repeat "it's a blob. It's just a blob now..

Grannynannywanny Sat 03-Sept-22 06:58:23

The jug option sounds a good idea MissA if you can do that till help arrives.

Open the window before you do the glass and card thing.
Then you are ready.
That's what I do.
I had this spider's sibling in my sitting room yesterday ? - and did manage to get it out. Was pretty concerned it would hide as I went for the glass and the card though!
I didn't want to take my eyes off it whilst it was on the run!

Be brave! You can do it!

FannyCornforth Sat 03-Sept-22 06:58:34

I like the Envelope Method GNW!
I don’t mind touching them, but they tend to run off, and then I’m scared of hurting them

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:01:20

It's too big to fit into even a pint glass, I'm sure.
I really can't get close to one that big.
I just can't.

FannyCornforth Sat 03-Sept-22 07:01:35

The flaw with the Glass Method is that you have to look at your prey,
unlike the Loo Roll Method

MawtheMerrier Sat 03-Sept-22 07:03:17

Just as well this site is not based in Germanygrin! grin
(Try a feather duster with a long handle or a soft broom, it will pick up the spider
when you press down very gently then all you have to so is shake it outside )

FannyCornforth Sat 03-Sept-22 07:04:26

That’s a good one Maw smile

FannyCornforth Sat 03-Sept-22 07:05:13

That’s a good one Maw smile

Both the joke and the method

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:05:22

A lot of these methods involve getting far too close to the spider.

I simply cannot do that.

At least I manage to stay in my home now, years ago I would have literally run out into the street.

FannyCornforth Sat 03-Sept-22 07:07:42

You’re doing really well then MissA
It sounds like exposure therapy would work for you.
I’ve got to try and get some sleep, so I’ll pop back later to see how you’ve got on.
Good luck, you’ll be fine

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:08:38

Oh, the feather duster method sounds like it could work.
I not sure if I still have one.

I may have followed the advice that if you haven't used something for years then you should get rid of it, though. blush

That sounds like a good idea, if you can do it.

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:11:23

A broom is longer, so preferable, and I have one of those.

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:13:36

I'd have to throw the jug like a frisbee, and hope it landed neatly over the spider. Urgh!!!

Grannynannywanny Sat 03-Sept-22 07:21:24

Not much help just now but I recommend one of these for future use. I used to have one but gave it to my daughter in law who is very afraid of spiders. She’s still not keen but manages to use it if no other option. The trigger on the handle opens up the soft strands on the end which close and trap the spider to transport it outside.

I have an electric mouse trap.
It caught and dispatched a good few mice, humanely.
I wonder if the spider would go in it if I put it in the bath.

MissAdventure Sat 03-Sept-22 07:29:33

I'd have to throw the whole trap away, though.
