to say thank for supplying free soup,a roll and unlimited tea/coffee for the months of November and December to the over 60's?

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 10:37:56

There is well over a years wait for our community run (age uk?) lunch club, so maybe people will go to Asda instead.

It's about four miles away, though.

I think it's a brilliant idea.

Loneliness and isolation kill, just as much as physical issues.

Perhaps their vegan/ vegetarian selection isn’t up to par for some people.

vegansrock Sun 09-Oct-22 12:01:38

I doubt their £1 offering will be heavy on the animal products.

Kim19 Sun 09-Oct-22 13:39:47

Some really unkind and cynical thoughts of one's fellow man here. Sad........

vegansrock Sun 09-Oct-22 13:44:18

Maybe. I am being cynical and maybe Asda are doing this as a massive act of philanthropy. I would believe that if it were free. I haven’t got anything against Asda. I don’t shop there and my one experience of the cafe was not a good one. Good luck to those who like it.

It does not matter why Asda are doing it.
If it helps people, it’s doing good.

What kind of soup will it be?
Homemade Soup of the Day, maybe.
Tinned cream of chicken or tomato soup, or anything like that, no.
I'm fussy about soup. The tinned cr** is full of salt and sugar. confused

JaneJudge Sun 09-Oct-22 14:15:30

I love Heinz tomato soup with cheese on toast

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:24:07

It's one of my favourite things to eat.
Heinz tomato soup. Lovely!!

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:25:57

I like the posher ones, too, in the chilled section.

Piccolo tomatoes, with a garnish of basil.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 14:27:06

Heinz lentil is my favourite tinned one. I have it at least once a week.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:30:03

I can really, really recommend the sainsbury Lentil Dahl soup.

It's filling enough to make a couple of meals from, too.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:31:49

I used to be a big fan of the packet soups, too.
I can't remember, maybe Knorr was the brand.

JaneJudge Sun 09-Oct-22 14:31:50

the cully and sully soups are nice too

MerylStreep Sun 09-Oct-22 14:33:30

What kind of soup will it be.
ASDAs own I would think.

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:34:14

I can only manage online shopping at the moment.

It would be lovely to go and admire the food in person.
I miss that, strangely enough, because I loathe shopping normally.

I don't have an Asda near me, but the supermarkets in my High Street closed their cafes during lockdown and I'm sure other supermarkets also closed theirs - I wonder how many Asda's have cafes?
More importantly, they also closed their toilets!

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 14:40:37

MissA it’s only in the past two months that I’ve been going into shops (since February 2020!)
I get really quite excited about the littlest things.
So far, it’s just been the co op , M&S food hall and a garden centre.
I had totally forgotten how to use the contact free thingummy.
I’m also the only person in a mask still.

The habitat section in sainsburys holds me hostage and I must give off heavy shoplifter vibes as the security guard always follows me hmm blush

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:46:45

Oh yes, they slip in some really interesting bits and bobs in there, don't they?

I can really, really recommend the sainsbury Lentil Dahl soup.

The recipe below is very very reasonable and delicious. I make it weekly.

Notam Ottolenghi Curried lentil and coconut soup

2 tbsp coconut oil or sunflower oil
1 medium onion, peeled and finely diced
1 tbsp medium curry powder
¼ tsp chilli flakes
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
4cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
150g red lentils, rinsed and drained
400g tinned chopped tomatoes
25g coriander stalks cut into 2cm pieces, plus 5g picked leaves, to garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
400g tin coconut milk
Lime wedges, to serve

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan on a medium-high flame, then fry the onion for eight minutes, stirring often, until soft and caramelised. Add the curry powder, chilli flakes, garlic and ginger, and fry for two minutes more, stirring continuously. Add the lentils, stir through for a minute, then add the tomatoes, coriander stalks, 600ml cold water, a teaspoon of salt and a very generous grind of pepper, and leave to heat through.

Pour the coconut milk into a bowl and gently whisk until smooth and creamy. Set aside four tablespoons – you’ll use this when serving – then tip the remaining coconut milk into the soup pot. Bring the mixture up to a boil, turn down the heat to medium and leave to simmer gently for 25 minutes, until the lentils are soft but still hold their shape.

Divide the soup between four warmed bowls, drizzle over the remaining coconut milk, scatter the coriander leaves on top and serve with lime wedges.

I wait until they reduce things.... grin

MissAdventure Sun 09-Oct-22 14:52:07

Oh that does sound lovely, and I really like coconut.

I'm not sure I'm up to the cooking part, though.

We should start a recipe thread, I think.

Somebody once posted about 'pork thing' that she made for her family.

Lots of people asked for the recipe and made it.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Oct-22 15:01:51

Ooh, I’ll have to go to Sainsburys/ Habitat!
I’ll do my best to not whoop too loudly ?
