: A store that sells new husbands has opened in London where a woman may go to choose a husband.
Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

You may visit this storeONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increases as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor or may choose to go up to the next floor but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband.
On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men have jobs.
She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 2 - These men have jobs and love children.
'That's nice,' she thinks, 'but I want more.'

So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads:

Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love children, and are extremely good-looking.

'Wow,' she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads:

Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love children, are extremely good-looking, and do housework..

'Oh, mercy me!' she exclaims, 'I can hardly stand it!'

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads:

Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love children, are extremely good-looking, do housework, and have a strong romantic streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.
Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

PLEASE NOTE:

To avoid gender bias charges, the store's owner opened a New Wives store just across the street.

The first floor has wives that love sex.

The second floor has wives that love sex, have money and like beer.

The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited.

It's just a joke Fanny. Not an A Level English Paper.

It’s over long; cliched to the point of banality; and the lift analogy is laboured and clunky.

FannyCornforth, 🤣. But you make a fair comment and it made me chuckle. I mean that most sincerely.

But that’s what views on humour are-as varied as the insects in my garden-some welcome and some not.

FC is allowed her views as much as anyone surely? That’s what GN threads are about . Some agree with the OP, some don’t.

I’m actually quite partial to a bit of misanthropy

Now that was funny.

I like oneliners 😁

I think if you put up an O/P just because its a joke, you have to accept some people will or won't like it and say so.

Its not a joke to me personally as I'm getting out of a co-ercive abuse situation - police involved, the works - with a DH: he was to a degree mysogynous: I'm bound to see it differently.

So- its close to the bone when GN's say, "oh, cant you take a joke, its just a joke"

Because thats a classic put down from men to women.

Now I'm completely aware no one here has said it with that meaning at all, they are just saying, "oh, lighten up".

But tbh, if I wasn't in my situation, its interesting to de-construct language including jokes, and I think some GN's have approached it in that way, and its as valid as any other..

When will people learn not to rise to the bait and simply...ignore? hmm

Well said.
This place is mental

In fact, this place reminds me of Motherland.
So many posters desperate to stay on the right side of the 'Amandas'grin

What is the characteristic of an ananda on this thread ? In your opinion of course…

Lucca Mon 21-Nov-22 11:05:06

“Not rise to the bait “ ? Just either agree or don’t post ?

Yes you're right. It's why I don't post much anymore

LancashireGran Mon 21-Nov-22 12:00:31

Maybe not Bubbles71 but some people are determined to find offense even in the most innocent of places. grin

Hithere are you seriously suggesting that a proposal to ‘take somebody down’ would ever be seen as a joke on GN, whatever colour the victim was?

Nah, buddy, you messed up and showed your racist card

When all else fails bring racism into the mix.

I wonder if a thread deletion is imminent? Even if you didn’t find the joke funny, the thread itself is not only funny but quite mad. I’m off!

Hithere Mon 21-Nov-22 12:12:25

Hey, the one in the original post is a joke too, some posters say

I wanted to make the point that "jokes" can hide the most unacceptable behaviour and attitude and try to make it pass as acceptable.

Vintagejazz Mon 21-Nov-22 12:17:21

The two 'jokes' bear no comparison and I think your post is in extremely bad taste.

Yes it's become ridiculous and really shows how difficult it is to have a civil discussion on here.

LancashireGran Mon 21-Nov-22 12:35:55

Hithere, if that "joke" offended you as much as you say, why would you promote it still further by giving it more oxygen and broadcasting it on a public forum? Why would you possibly think it appropriate to repeat "a joke" about running any pedestrian down with a car and particularly a black person?
