Celebrity, Fanny? I’ll have you know it’s a Royal soap opera who rank above Celebrities. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

To my mind, it is meaningless then. Why even do it?

So that she can continue with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme after Edward has retired.

Perhaps the most bonkers thing about all of this is imagining that any of the RF are actually needed by the DoE scheme.

I think she's going to be very enthusiastic about it - a trailblazer Duchess!

Doesn't mean that she needs to be Duchess of Edinburgh to take part though. confused

I'm in Edinburgh. Just. Not. Bothered.

I’m not in Edinburgh. But just not bovvered either😁
It isn’t official just a rumour, but they can all call themselves anything they like, doesn’t affect me.

The idea of a seven-year-old duchess is just so funny - but I suppose it wouldn’t be yet.

Ah, I see...(not sure how to do the quotes from other users)

I had not heard of this award. But you don't need an active Duke or Duchess to give out an award... What about the Victoria Cross?

volver Tue 29-Nov-22 19:51:00

There's a common misconception here in the UK CanadianGran that the RF in general, and the late DoE in particular, are keystones in the organisation of the DoE Awards.

The Awards are a splendid idea and a splendid organisation, based on a suggestion made to the late DoE seventy years ago. He roused all his chums and got the whole thing going. The DoE's son Edward is still somehow involved, giving support to young people running up mountains or something.

It won't fall apart if there is no Royal involved. If there are no volunteers involved, now that would be a different matter.

Right, so that's sorted. Next RF quandary please, when you're ready.

If it is true that Edward and Sophie were in line for receiving this title, I think it is wrong of Charles to give it to Charlotte. Obviously we can expect changes with a new King but this seems quite a slight to Edward whilst Charlotte won't care what title she gets at her age.

chris8888 Wed 30-Nov-22 11:37:05

She is not even 8 years old what a crazy idea ban the silly titles and just have a king if you have too.

Blossoming Wed 30-Nov-22 11:39:43

For some reason this thread is making me think of The Duchess in Alice in Wonderland and Tenniel’s wonderful illustrations.

Irismarle Wed 30-Nov-22 11:55:50

I wonder if it is all just rumour about Charlotte being made Duchess of Edinburgh - as already said, would that make her future husband, probably a non royal, Duke of Edinburgh? Weird. I have a feeling Charles may confer the title on Edward to mark his own coronation. Titles often seem to be given out to mark occasions like weddings. I’m in Edinburgh and do take an interest in royal flummery - maybe because my mother did. But I agree it is all bonkers when you think about it.

Theoddbird Wed 30-Nov-22 11:57:51

So...an in named source at the palace leaked this to the Daily Mail. I will wait until an official announcement. Charlotte would not get the title until she is an adult I am sure. I would prefer that Edward became the Duke of Edinburgh. He and Sophie were very close to the Queen. Oh and re an uncalled for comment about Edward leaving the marines. I think he was very brave in leaving them. He made is own choice and refused to do something that he quickly realized was not right for him. Well done home I said at the time.

Why should I care about titles for those already entitled to the good things of life while the rest of us slog along under this useless government of Tories for Tories?

grannygranby Wed 30-Nov-22 11:58:33

I think the Wessex’s would be good I’ve heard it is something to go with their heirs would therefore be the future holders, but their daughter was Philip’s favourite, he went carriage riding with her and left her his gloves which I thought was very touching. So the title would be in good hands. And Philip did make it his own with the awards making it mean more than just a fancy title. Therefore his wishes should be honoured.

enabenn Wed 30-Nov-22 12:05:54

Agree. The title should go to Edward and Sophie. That was Prince Philips wish.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 30-Nov-22 12:08:31

I understood that the Duke if Edinburgh wanted the title to pass to Edward so it seems petty of Charles to ignore that and give it to a child. I admire the King but can sometimes be disappointed when he does things like this. Edward has worked hard for the D if E scheme for years now and should have this title, as his father wanted.

Joyfulnanna Wed 30-Nov-22 12:10:23

A little girl with big shoes to fill. I wish her all the best.

Not a royalist as most people know, but disappointed that this title wasn't given to Edward so that Louise, the granddaughter who shares the late Duke's passion for carriage driving, could inherit one day. There's no need for a child as young as Charlotte to be carrying a Duchess title around; it's really quite ridiculous! Besides, she's bound to take the Princess Royal title on the demise of Anne!

Babsbada Wed 30-Nov-22 13:21:24

Complete nonsense the whole ruritania farce

Louise wouldn’t inherit any title. It would go to her brother, James because the right of succession belonging to the firstborn son didn’t change until 2011 when William and Kate married. Their firstborn was a boy so Charlotte was the first girl to be affected by this change.

Sexism is still alive and well at the Palace. Poor Louise.

It was a feudal rule which changed in 2011 so it isn’t still alive and well.
