At this time of the year ... anyone else fancying a glass of sherry before dinner?

I always forget there are a few to choose from! My mum always bought Harvey’s Bristol Cream. Sticky, warming and always reminds me of eating out (very occasionally) when we fist got married in 1974 - ordering a ‘schooner’ of it! Then along came drier Croft Original, kept in the fridge. I’ve enjoyed a very dry glass of fino in a bodega in Málaga with the locals but never over here for some reason. I always stick to wine or a G&T.

Time for a seasonal change I think.
Will you join me?
😊

Dare I? Calli I just knew you’d be a bad influence type.
Give me a minute to pluck up my (Dutch) courage ...

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Dec-22 18:22:46

I'm nudging you

Ha! Did it. And had a laugh with the couple nearby.
Himself would be mortified if he were in here.
Well, he’s not (yet).
I’ll have to be more measured if he arrives.

She looks like Amy Winehouse doesn’t she?

RANSACK THE HOUSE henetha!

Urmstongran Tue 06-Dec-22 18:35:42

If Himself doesn’t arrive in 5 minutes I’ll have to go back up and bung the chicken thighs in the oven, next to the jacket potatoes that are already in there, otherwise they’ll be overdone. Shame really, I’m enjoying this little get together.

If he arrives, I’ll buy us both a drink and ask him to go up and pop the chicken in. It’s prepped ready.

We always had sherry on for my Nan. Sherry didn’t count as a drink. Now I’ve just taken advantage of Sainsbury’s offers for gin and Baileys. Finished the last bottle last spring.

I just found it!!!!! I'm having a glass right now....yay... It's called Croft original and it's lovely...smilewine

Yay! Was just about to leave and guess who’s just walked in?
No, not John Travolta.

He’s gone up bless.
I’m off to the bar.

Keep your sherry reminisces coming and drinks in general.
Catch you later ‘gator.

I won a bottle of PX at our U3A wine and sherry tasting morning last month. I normally go for really dry sherries but DD and DSiL helped me polish it off last Saturday during our pre Christmas Bake Off!

I’m a convert.

Anyone watching Parliament channel currently?discussion is about Covid PPE contracts. Absolute disgrace.

Oops sorry didn’t mean to post here. Many apologies.

I’ll join you in a sherry Urmstongran any time of the day. The sweeter the better.

Harvey’s Bristol Cream straight from the fridge. Delicious.

Doodle Tue 06-Dec-22 19:47:29

Shazza I think you’ll find Urms is sweet enough as she is 🤣

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Dec-22 19:48:09

She looks like Amy Winehouse doesn’t she?

She reminds me of someone 🤔

Joan Collins?

Yes please, I’ve really fancied a sherry about 6 pm recently. Not done it yet but happy to join

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 06-Dec-22 19:59:05

Ooh- now look what you've made me do - I've opened the bottle and am enjoying a glass of amontillado: just missing the smells and sounds of a Spanish bar.

Urmstongran Tue 06-Dec-22 20:04:41

Good to have you join us Iam! Cheers!
For those who don’t like to drink alone (unlike me earlier, in Bevano) then drinking with us all ‘virtual friends’ is perfect isn’t it?

Glad you found that sherry henetha! Cheers to you too!

For those who don’t know (yet might just be slightly interested) Bevano Lounge in Urmston is a nod to Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan. He opened the first NHS hospital here in Urmston (it was called Park Hospital then back in the day in 1946).

I love the fact the hospital Board still don’t charge for parking in the big car park for patients.

Right. Time to eat.

Please continue regarding alcoholic drinks.
It’s a subject that interests me greatly.

Cheers Urms, since the darker evening arrived I’ve been fancying a glass of something about 5 o’clock. Diving into the wine at that time seemed a bit decadent somehow but a glass of sherry sounds so civilised and ladylike. I’ve checked in the fridge and we have the remains of a bottle of Fonseca Elegante described as a medium dry. There might be enough to have a glass while doing the dreaded writing of the Christmas cards.
Sorry to the lady who suggested it as I daren’t scroll back to remember your name but that was the best incentive to get on with them that I’ve read.

I never did like sherry or port. It's always a glass of cider or perry for me as an aperitif.

Devorgilla Tue 06-Dec-22 20:54:27

Urmstongran, great idea. I normally only bother with sherry at Christmas. Both my mother and MIL liked one. My mother would declare that it was sherry time, a phrase my sisters and I still use. Sometimes I will Alexa my sisters while we enjoy a sherry time glass or two. I still have the schooner glasses my MIL had. I must dust them off this year. Cheers, Ladies.

Urmstongran Tue 06-Dec-22 20:57:54

Cheers Devorgilla! Sweet memories. ❤️

Glass of sherry before putting up the decorations (also before opening the presents) takes me right back to when the DDs were small. Too Pepe then, manzanilla now.
Must have gone out of fashion when wine became much cheaper after we joined the common market.

annsixty Tue 06-Dec-22 21:20:29

One of these nights Urmstongran you are going to be so shocked when I walk into that wine bar.
Just two short train journeys, free to me, and I will be there.
No sherry thankyou, G&T or a cocktail will be wonderful.

annsixty Tue 06-Dec-22 21:22:09

Does anyone still do Pimms o’ clock during the summer?
