Hello smile
We haven’t had a Night Owls thread for ages, so I thought I’d start one.
I know that there are quite a few of us about in the wee small hours, and it can be a lonely time.
So here it is.
I look forward to chatting in the nights and weeks to come x

The sneezing affects me FC explosive from both ends!

We had an awful year dogwise then. S was diagnosed with breast cancer and was PTS, then the daft old cocker spaniel C had a second stroke and was also PTS. Unbelievably a young spaniel then suffered a twisted bowel and while I’d rushed him to the vet as soon as I’d seen him looking so sorry for himself, he was untreatable. Then Ollie, so we’d lost 4 dogs in 6 months - devastating!

MawtheMerrier Sat 21-Jan-23 04:52:56

@ GG, but hopefully dropped dead doing what he loved best? A bit like my friends DH who died at the Golf Club just before Christmas. A dreadful shock to everybody but he was simply in his favourite place. 😢😢😢
Sincere sympathy

Ginny42 Sat 21-Jan-23 04:56:25

Fanny yes the NYT and one you can find if you search for spellingbeegame. They do have some strange words on that one though!

Georgesgran Sat 21-Jan-23 04:59:47

Yes, Maw by this time DH was ill and said he’d rehome the rest of the dogs, but I adored Ollie and promised I’d keep him for the rest of his life. Sadly, he died a couple of years before DH.

That's so a sad about Ollie GG, heartbreaking.
Mayal glad to hear your GP is being so helpful, you feel better when you know they are there for you.
The snow is still lying here, but temperatures to rise now and rain on its way. At least we got a bit of a walk in the snow, my dog won't go out in the rain. Here's a picture of my Ivy Fanny. She nearly 10 now, we think anyway, I rescued her nearly 6 years ago as a stray so don't know her age for sure.

Maya1 Sat 21-Jan-23 05:28:50

That's so sad GG, losing so many dogs so closely. Ollie and Ivy are gorgeous.
Thank you all for support, l know many of you nursed or helped nurse your own loved ones and will be glad of any advice.
I only have my DS and DDiL, they are very supportive but both work and my DGD has SEN. The rest of my family are deceased.
My DH family all live in the US.
Off to make a cup of tea now before Finn wakes up.

Maya1 Sat 21-Jan-23 05:43:25

Here is Finn

MawtheMerrier Sat 21-Jan-23 05:50:50

Dogs and husbands, eh?
Hattie came to me as Paw started one of his final stays in hospital in 2017 and I vividly remember her asleep beside on the sofa with her head on my shoulder, her long nose actually in my ear in the wee small hours of what turned out to be his last night as I sat up watching some mindless TV while he was in surgery for a massive internal bleed.
She was my 24/7 companion for the 2-3 years after he died which of course took us into lockdown, and I was devastated when she had to be PTS with a serious internal illness in 2021. For the first time ever I was not able to hold my dog in those last moments because of the covid restrictions. Always felt I let her down.
Sorry, this is all v depressing and not what anybody needs.
Let’s hope the Good Morning thread and Mick’s plans for buses to Bicester and Buckingham soon cheer us up. You don’t need me bringing you down! Thank you for your company 😴😴😴

Maya1 Sat 21-Jan-23 05:59:52

Never think you let her down Maw, your love shines through for all your girls.
As you know l am struggling with Finn at the moment and need some of your strength.
He is a very grumpy old man now but funnily enough he has made a new friend, a beautiful greyhound called tigger because of her stripes.
Yes, someone cheer us up please.

FannyCornforth Sat 21-Jan-23 06:03:44

Oh Maw, you have brought a tear to my eye thanks

Ivy and Fin are absolute sweethearts

I hope that we all have a good day, with extra special thoughts with you Maya x

MawtheMerrier Sat 21-Jan-23 06:14:22

I think the sight of a big doggy grin and a wagging tail cannot fail to lift our spirits.
They live n the “now” and could teach us a lot about counting our blessings- food, warmth, shelter (and maybe a squeaky toy?) 🐶

Alioop Sat 21-Jan-23 06:18:34

So sad Maw, Hattie knew how much you loved her.
I've enjoyed seeing the pictures of all your gorgeous dogs, aren't we are all lucky to have, or had, such lovely dogs in our lives.

Ginny42 Sun 22-Jan-23 02:50:25

I sincerely hope I'm the only one awake and have been since 1.30. I woke to a loud thud but did a quick run round and didn't find anything so I'm guessing it was a car door slamming.

Done the spelling bee, now worrying about my DGS aged 14 who isn't doing too well at school but resists help. They live abroad and there's little I can do to help, but my friend is going to do a Zoom meeting today to go through the maths for an exam next week. Worry, worry!

Maya1 Sun 22-Jan-23 03:54:38

Morning Ginny

I'm awake too. Sorry to hear about your DGS, hopefully things will be OK. It must be hard being so far away.

FannyCornforth Sun 22-Jan-23 04:35:11

Hello Ginny and Maya
Yes, as Maya says, it must be hard for you. I used to be a Learning Support Assistant in a secondary school, and it’s not unusual for the children to resist help.
Are there aspects of school that he enjoys?
I do the Spelling Bee too. It’s relaxing isn’t it, a bit like mindfulness.
I do the best I can on my own; then use the Hints; then finally look at the clues on the Community page.
Even then I rarely get to Queen Bee status as, like you say, some of the words are utterly bizarre.
Like ‘Japanese rush mat’ or something to do with physics confused

Maya how are you doing?

SunshineSally Sun 22-Jan-23 04:38:16

Morning all. Am in the wide awake club too!
Such lovely photos of our dogs but gosh some really sad memories for some of you too. Brings tears to my eyes reading them. Bless you all.
Mayal so wonderful to read that your DH is making progress. Hopefully the hospital will have a care package in place for when he is discharged. It might be worth you having a look on the stroke.org.uk website to see what help is available for you both - apologies if you’ve already done that though.
Ginny always a bit scary (I think) when a sudden noise wakens you 😱. DH’s clock radio keeps making an odd noise - like power has gone off and come back again - doesn’t seem to bother him … he’s gently (for a change!) snoring! I hope your DGS is okay. We never stop worrying about them do we.

Maya1 Sun 22-Jan-23 04:58:52

I'm doing okay Fanny, thank you.
I was a little down when l returned from the hospital yesterday as it now seems that my DH sight in his right eye has also been affected. He was very down and wasn't responding much when l spoke to him.
Thank you for the suggestion about the stroke.org website Sally, l hadn't thought of that. I need any help l can get.
I really do appreciate your kind thoughts.

Kim19 Sun 22-Jan-23 04:59:15

Morning all! Lovely just lying here and listening to all your goings on whilst perusing my potential day ahead. Nice......

MawtheMerrier Sun 22-Jan-23 08:53:24

Good morning - two words

NIGHT NURSE !shockshocksmile

FannyCornforth Sun 22-Jan-23 09:55:50

It’s amazing stuff isn’t it Maw!
I can’t believe that you can actually buy it legally 😁
I heard that there is currently a shortage, so I snaffled up two bottles, just in case

ixion Sun 22-Jan-23 10:13:56

I am as tough as old boots, no allergies, no significant medication or health issues but I took my first dose of Night Nurse in desperation last year, when I had flu-like (not Covid) symptoms.
Within seconds, my palms itched uncontrollably and they came out in big red, burning welts. Scary.
Never again!

FannyCornforth Sun 22-Jan-23 10:18:29

ixion Oh my word!
(Did it knock you out though?)

MrsKen33 Sun 22-Jan-23 10:25:18

Anybody missed me? Five very bad nights as BT really messed up our broadband. We have been without a phone also. So a big worry. Lovely young man has just left and all is back to normal. Perhaps I will sleep tonight.

FannyCornforth Sun 22-Jan-23 10:30:34

I have definitely missed you Ken!
I was just about to pm you.
I did wonder where you were.
I’m glad that you are back 😊

MrsKen33 Sun 22-Jan-23 10:44:22

Thanks Fanny It’s been stressful.
