Products we've used in the past.

Woodleigh Green shampoo. It had a strong smell of apples that lasted in your hair for ages.

When we were in the Brownies we used Magic Wadding to polish our little sprites badges. It came in a tin and looked like dirty yellow cotton wool and was a bit oily. You rubbed the item and made it go black and then rubbed it off, leaving a very shiny finish.

We loved Cremola Foam - also in a tin. When mixed with water it made very sweet drink. I haven't seen it for years, it was probably full of E-numbers.

Can't remember the name but my older sister used to have a perfume in a small black bottle with a little pink " stick" inside that you used to dab the perfume on your neck. I am sure it used to have a pink bow on it too. Mine was Aqua Manda perfume, very 70s, it had quite a funky bottle all brown and orange swirls.

Happy to share your memories! Yes Linco beer shampoo,Cremola foam,Lemon shaped soaps,brownie badge cleaning(used it for my bike rims too,and some of yours I dont remember. Doeas anyone remember their hairdryer and record player into the ceiling socket?Can't remember if the iron was too? I hated the smell of perming lotion. Teabagwoman,yes Playtex was the name I couldn't remember! and Georges Gran,Fanny soap !! lol

My first boyfriend gave me his mother’s bottle of 4711. I thought he asked if I liked “Force Heaven Eleven”, I’d never heard of 4711 as my mother only had Avon Occur!

I too used Avon Occur until I was pregnant with my daughter, but from then on I could not bear the smell without becoming nauseated and vomiting.

My mother used Midnight in Paris in a flat blue bottle, or Coty L’aimant. The latter, which I still catch a whiff of, brings memories of her.

Avon Pretty Peach products, i remember using as a young teenager in the late sixties.

Loxene shampoo. I remember it as one of many that made my scalp itchy.

I never crossed the threshold of one but was fascinated by houses advertising the services of Spirella corset makers.

I remember Yardley’s Sea Jade & Pretty Peach products well. Here’s a few more things I remember:

Receiving a box of Weekend chocolates on my birthday.

I was bought "pretty peach" too, Rainwashed and loved the bath pearls Doodledog. I wonder if the "ball" was made of gelatine? Later on I discovered you could buy vegetarian ones from the body shop and my children had a few at Christmas time.
By then there were fish shapes abd stars and so on but I think the originals were softer to be honest.

4711 was definitely popular and so yes, I remember that too.

Every Christmas my parents gave Bronnley soaps to customers including the (beautiful 🥰) lemon one. They looked so fabulous in the fancy packaging and stunning gift-wrap.
We would also have a lemon 🍋 one in our little downstairs cloakroom over the festive period. When that arrived, Christmas was just round the corner! Exciting!

Although I was never at boarding school that same sense of having something special rings so true. And that zingy lemon smell and beauty of the lemon shape brings back so many memories.

I remember Fiori Perfume made by Boots - No 7 - I think. Used to love that.

Oh, I loved Just Musk, SachaMac! And Miners make-up.

Bromley soap, too, NotSpaghetti. I never used it - it was always used to scent drawers (and the drawers in the drawers )

At the risk of sounding maudlin, I think that the items we're remembering are so evocative because there were fewer 'things' and we didn't get so many treats. I can't imagine my children's generation looking back and remembering a type of soap, or a scented shampoo in the same way - things like that just aren't as 'special' as they used to be.

My local garden centre sells those lemon soaps, they do look nice, I think from reading your comments NotSpaghetti I will buy some, probably good to keep one in the kitchen, as when preparing veg especially onions, a lemon scent would be good for washing hands.

I remember I had a lipstick called Roman Pink. Seemed so romantic and a nice colour. Can’t remember who made it.

Two perfumes that I remember were Styx (made by Coty?), which came in a black bottle with a ‘dipper’, as it was slightly creamy in texture. The other one was made by Boots and was called If. I loved both of them!

I still miss the scent and I think that it's the best shampoo that I've ever used .

Elida Cream silk conditioner .
Twink perms .
Kiku perfume in that wonderful yellow ball
Max Factor Electrique perfume .
Topaz perfume .
Pretty Peach scent .

And Vim .
I have my secret supply of Vim to use on any sign of fungus on my rhizomes !

Coty L’Aimant was my Mum’s favourite. It used to frustrate her that she couldn’t get the remains out with the little pink stick. She’d leave the lid off an empty one and use it as a scented drawer freshener when she couldn’t poke any more out of it.

Liberty bodices with rubber buttons were from the Co op. I hated them. Mine were pulled on and negotiated every winter until I wore a bra. We did wear a vest and an underskirt.
My mum wore Evening in Paris. along with Cream puff powder and Bougouis rouge in a box,Max factor lipstick and cleansed with bottles of Glycerine and Rosewater she seemed to buy by the gallon from the chemist.
Suspender belts that gave you tummy ache we had to wear long blue stockings for school and needed one to keep them up,the alternative were blue knee socks which changed to red in the sixform

I was "twinked "every Christmas and so were most girls in the class with straight hair.

I'd forgotten about Kiku and If.

I wonder if we'd still like them now? I loved both when I was about 13.

Where do you get Vim, Esmay? I tried to get some (or Ajax) a while ago, but with no luck. Barkeepers Friend is good, but far more expensive and not the same thing really.

Oh my! I've just looked on Amazon for Vim! Have you seen the price 😳 £11.75 a bottle!
