I've been married over 50 years and have always removed my engagement ring when making pastry, washing up, gardening etc - and at night. My husband has just bought me an eternity ring and I mentioned to the jeweller that I would be removing it along with my engagement ring. He said there is no need to remove either. What do other "Grans" do,please?

Footnote: along with four or five genuine pieces ,I have several dress rings or faux, all real gold but I always remember Joan Collins saying she woke takes just in case she were mugged , she'd gladly hand them all over z knowing that they were worth next to nothing!!! Talk about last laugh , I too don't fret about damage or loss with the fakes!!

WORE FAKES....EDIT?

I don't take my engagement ring off even if doing messy/dirty things.
I might take it off afterwards to brush it with an old toothbrush if it's obviously still dirty after thorough hand-washing.

I only wore my Engagement ring when going out. I was a nurse so it wasn't allowed anyway when I was working.

Engagement ring a bit too tight to take off easily - hence keep it on all the time.

I only wear my engagement ring when I go out along with other dress rings but wear my wedding and eternity rings and my mama wedding ring all the time x

I keep my rings on all the time, maybe take off briefly if putting hand cream on.
I wear my wedding ring, engagement ring and eternity ring on my left hand and Mums engagement and eternity ring on my right hand along with an opal ring Hubby bought me for our silver wedding twenty five years ago.
Recently in hospital for an operation so had to remove all jewellery but kept my wedding ring on which the nurse covered with tape, felt really undressed without my other rings.

I only wear my engagement and eternity rings when going out. Wedding ring is worn all the time and only removed when baking.

I take my rings off when kneading dough. My mother didn't and her rings were caked with old dough - really disgusting and hard to clean. A health hazard too, I felt.

I wear rubber gloves when cleaning and gardening gloves in the garden, although after my wedding ring slipped of inside a glove, and I first found it after I had searched the pile of brushwood I had assembled that morning, I usually take my rings off before starting any outdoor work.

Only wear my rings to go out as always suffered from dermatitis on ring finger if I wear rings for too long.Tried lots of thing s to try and prevent condition but only not wearing rings works saddly.

I never take my engagement ring off. It’s perfectly clean as it gets washed several times a day when I wash my hands. It’s been on my finger for 60 years! I’ve seen young women taking off their rings in public washrooms! Why run the risk of losing them?

HannahLoisLuke Thu 16-Feb-23 13:13:26

Never wore my engagement ring unless going out. It’s an emerald with diamonds and I was told never to get it wet as emeralds are porous and could become brittle if immersed in soapy water too often. My other nightmare is leaving it on the basin in a public loo so these days I wear a fake diamond ring and my proper ring is locked away.

I never removed my rings and deliberately chose a Victorian style which is flat so doesn't catch on things, as when we got engaged I worked in a lab and often had to wear surgical gloves at work.
Since my divorce I wear the engagement ring on my right hand. My fingers are fatter on that hand so it is too tight to remove now!

Never wear any rings in the house, never have so it's a habit now. My wedding, engagement and eternity bands only go on when I leave the house. Surprised to hear so many g'netters wear their's most of the time.

Due to afall at 16, many moons ago, my left hand swells unpredictably so I do not wear any of my rings.

Missiseff Thu 16-Feb-23 13:55:54

Take both my engagement and eternity rings off around the house. Would never clean in them. Can't wear them for work either

Think it all depnds on what sort of stone or setting your rings are. I never take my wedding or engagement ring off, except to clean them of course, but they fit into each other and the stone is a diamond so the hardest material in the world. However some stones are softer and some are porous, if in doubt ask a jeweller.

CountryMouse22 Thu 16-Feb-23 14:31:39

I only wear my engagement ring if were going out.

Wendy Thu 16-Feb-23 14:34:08

I always wear my wedding ring but engagement, eternity and dress rings I put on as I leave the house. Five in all !

Diplomat Thu 16-Feb-23 16:17:48

On the subject of rings, after 30 years the diamond fell out of my engagement. Fortunately I was at home and heard it fall out onto a tiled floor so it was reset. I will have it checked at the jewellers soon as now coming up to 40 years. It is well worth checking.

mamaPow5 Thu 16-Feb-23 16:17:53

I never take my engagement ring off or wedding ring. …only to clean them! They’ve been on my finger for 52 years now!!

Yammy Thu 16-Feb-23 16:27:36

lixy

My wedding ring stays on my hand all the time.

My engagement ring is in its' box and has been for years. I was worried that I would lose it if I had to take it off frequently so that was the safest way.

Sometimes rings are of different gold quality. If they are worn together the harder one will wear away the softer as they rub against each other.

Think about wearing wear it lixy,I left mine off and we were burgled and it was stolen. I wear my eternity ring all the time and if I've been cooking give it a spruce up with the automatic toothbrush. My Ruby one is getting made bigger and then I will wear it all the time.

Never had an engagement ring. Too poor. My husband bought my 24 caret gold wedding ring in Damascus whilst serving in the Grenadier Guards in Palestine in 1946. It has remained on my finger since that year. Very much worn down no sign of the flower decoration. Now my finger has swollen cannot get it off anyway.

When I go wild swimming, I always take my wedding ring off and then dramatically say “Goodbye darling, I am married to the sea.”

mokryna Thu 16-Feb-23 18:32:45

I always take off my rings when making pastry except the wedding one when I was married.
