I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

a rather unattractive elderly grumpy man

As opposed to a young, pretty Queen, as his mother was, back in 1953.

I actually think Charles looks the best he ever has done. In his youth he looked gauche, gawky, a young man in his 20’s but dressed as though in his 50’s.

With his grey/white hair and a still trim figure, I think he looks quite dashing and dapper nowadays. And confidence he never had when young.

And before anyone says, yes I know he can afford the best tailor, but so can many other wealthy people who haven’t worn as well as Charles.

Well, we can’t afford to pay doctors or nurses, create decent sewage systems or shore up crumbling services but somehow we cabin afford lavish royal ceremonies. This country has its priorities all wrong,

Exactly

Ear of tin, neck of brass

(I feel a poem coming on…)

Yes, we can afford all that.

It's the Government at fault there, not the King.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 10:09:27

True.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 10:10:36

Still tin earred though.
Charles should be more mindful of his ‘subjects’

Grammaretto Sun 09-Apr-23 10:13:41

Biglouis you say cut down to size as in Scandinavia but when a family visit to Denmark coincided with a royal christening (I think) wherever we went everyone was glued to their TV screens.

We are strange, imo, the way, as a nation, we obsess with celebrity

Apparently the Coronation will cost around 100 million, meanwhile in the same breath the Government slash 21 million from the Care budget!

M0nica Sun 09-Apr-23 11:22:48

People complaining abut the cost of the coronation all seem to assume that if the money wasn't spent on the coronation it would be spent on relieving poverty and aiding the sick.

What is the evidence this would happen. I mean the money is coming from a variety of different sources and even between ministries, would the ministry of transport give the money it would otherwise have spent on traffic control for the coronation to local authroities to fill in potholes or would it be used to extend a motorway somewhere.

What is the evdnce that the money not spent would then be well spent?

volver3 Sun 09-Apr-23 11:25:47

Most people complaining about the cost of the coronation are probably not so literal as that.

My view is we live in a country that says it can't afford to pay care workers properly but we think its lovely to pay £100million for a party and £8m for pictures of an old chap in a uniform, because you know, "tradition".

Our priorities need looking at.

Blondiescot Sun 09-Apr-23 11:34:04

Exactly. Priorities. In a country where children are going to school hungry, it just seems well over the top.

Riverwalk Sun 09-Apr-23 11:48:43

For those who are monarchists and practising Christians do you have any conflicting emotions on the coronation ceremony itself?

Two adulterers are being 'anointed in holy oil' specially brought from Jerusalem, crowned in a solemn ceremony in the highest church in the land by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Riverwalk Sun 09-Apr-23 11:59:41

And the excess lavishness.

I agree. What happened to 'thou shall not commit adultery'?
How can someone be head of the Church of England with this sort of past history?
It's all a mockery.

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 12:05:02

But surely it’s always been that hypocritical?
I thought that many Kings were adulterous and worse

timetogo2016 Sun 09-Apr-23 12:11:47

I might do,it will make a change from watching repeats.

Glorianny Sun 09-Apr-23 12:21:36

I'm hoping that everyone stays home to watch and I can go for a walk along an empty beach. I won't watch it, but I have no doubt clips will be repeated ad nauseum on every new bulletin for the next week, so I'll see it anyway!
A la lantern anyone?????

FarNorth Sun 09-Apr-23 12:28:59

No idea what day it's on so don't know what I might be doing.

I'm pretty sure Charles could get the government to tone it down if he wanted to.

I'm not commenting on precedent, I think we all know the basic history of the monarchy - was more interested in how those of faith view the forthcoming ceremony.

Iam64 Sun 09-Apr-23 12:37:47

I’m not a fan of Charles. I accept I live in a monarchy and hope he does cut it down to size. He needs to do much more than stop Harry and Andrew wearing military honours, I don’t mean punish them more, I mean modernise the whole shebang.

I’m with FannyC in believing all kings seem to see it as their right to have mistresses. Prince P was renowned as an adventurer.

lemsip Sun 09-Apr-23 12:47:07

just seen then going to church earlier.. no sign of slimming down the monarchy... and the Tindalls, well!

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 13:04:39

I know what you are saying Riverwalk, but isn’t the hypocrisy ‘baked in’?
Isn’t is just accepted?
Or do some people really think that Charles has a ‘divine right’?
I’d love to know too

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 13:06:02

Iam64 careful now! I got posts deleted and a warning for saying as much!

Calendargirl Sun 09-Apr-23 13:16:43

But it’s the family members going to church on Easter Day. Nothing to do with ‘slimming down’.

The Tindalls are part of that family, Zara being the King’s niece, so why shouldn’t they be there?

FannyCornforth Sun 09-Apr-23 13:30:50

I like The Tindalls
They should have a reality show.
It would knock they who will not be named’s shows out of the park!
