I thought I'd start a new thread because I don't want to spoil the pleasure of the monarchists or let the thread turn into a slanging match.

What will you be doing on Coronation Day? Will you watch it for the historical value? Will you hide from every TV? Are you planning a day out?

Depending on the weather we may do some jobs in the garden and sit in the sun, go out to somewhere miles away from TVs and celebrations, or visit the empty shops. Tbh I'd sit in a dark room for the whole day if it was the only way to avoid the expensive farce.

just seen then going to church earlier.. no sign of slimming down the monarchy... and the Tindalls, well!

But it’s the family members going to church on Easter Day. Nothing to do with ‘slimming down’.

The Tindalls are part of that family, Zara being the King’s niece, so why shouldn’t they be there?

Quite.

Perhaps all family members should be banished from the Kingdom, never to be seen in public 😁

Link to the Danish royal twins christening

That was years ago and I remember it being in all the glossy magazines in Australia, in fact the Danish Royal Family is always in the mags over there because Crown Princess Mary is their very own royal Princess.

Not a royalist, not interested.....don't know what I'll be doing, but it won't involve watching, listening to or reading about this waste of public money!

Apparently the Coronation will cost around 100 million, meanwhile in the same breath the Government slash 21 million from the Care budget!

That's because we have a government that will do that.

We can afford both.

Whether we can afford both and I don’t have figures supporting that statement.
I consider it morally wrong when we have food banks supporting greater numbers than before, families in work struggling with the cost of living and the elderly frightened to put on their heating.
I agree it is the Government’s decisions, but it leaves a sour note in the mouth.

It was 2011 Callistemon but the Danish royals are just as popular media fodder now.
They are more tasteful than we are in the UK.
I'll say that.
Parading with uniforms and medals is bad taste imo.

Greta Sun 09-Apr-23 15:35:18

I agree that many Scandinavians are interested in their royals but I don't think they are besotted with them. Coronations are no longer seen as acceptable. We are after all writing 2023.

M0nica Sun 09-Apr-23 18:38:56

Strange that no one ever discusses the income the coronation contributes to its cost through bringing in extra tourists, selling souvenirs, and television rights.

It is estimated that the coronation will add £1 billion to the British economy [[www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1728140/king-charles-coronation-cost-uk-economy-pubs-hotels-shops[[

If you are going to criticise what is spent on the coronation, you should look at the event from all sides and look at income generation as well.

J52 Sun 09-Apr-23 18:59:26

The true cost of will not be calculated until the event is over, but to refer to the article in the Daily Express 31st January 2023, the DCMS estimates that the first Bank holiday will cost the economy 2.39 billion £. They hope that there will be more money added to the economy than lost.
I’m not an Express reader so I don’t know how factually correct their reporting is.

M0nica Mon 10-Apr-23 10:38:15

Like many links, these have been found online. However the article does give the name and details of the company who did the research. The sum they calculate is so much larger than the sum estimated for the cost of the coronation that even if they grossly calculatedm, the gain would still be in excess of the cost.

Thecompany undertaking the research is a large and reputable company, which I have heard about before and read reports they have produced.

volver3 Mon 10-Apr-23 10:44:55

The company who did the research are a brand strategy firm who in the past put the value of the RF at something like £6bn because they included the brand value to small businesses of having a "By Appointment" sign above your door.

As I'm sure you know, brand value doesn't mean the money they've got in the bank.

Guess we'll see.

Just wondering if they all pay for their own limos etc. And who foots the bill for the weekend? Nice little jolly for them all I suppose.
Is going to church being a "working Royal"? I'm never sure exactly what that involves.

NanKate Mon 10-Apr-23 12:38:37

I am thoroughly looking forward to the Coronation 👍.

DH and I have asked 3 friends round, who would have been on their own, to watch the ceremony and then we will have a sandwich lunch and trifle. One friend is baking a cake the 97 year old is bringing the booze and a surprise from the third one.

Today I have bought an M and S tin of shortbread. The container is purple with the words KING Charles III on the front. We will have that with morning coffee.

DH will put up the bunting, I have a royal table cloth from the Jubilee, royal napkins and plates.

It will be a day of celebration in our house 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥂🥂🥂🍾🍾🍹🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Did you see them arriving in limos? Are they all staying for the weekend?

No, I have no idea either. Perhaps they came in their own vehicles, and went home after the service. Maybe they went back to Charles’ for lunch, as many families did yesterday.

So what? Makes not a scrap of difference to you or me.

biglouis Mon 10-Apr-23 12:50:26

I feel strongly that people who dont support royalty or the coronation should be able to protest peacefully and express their views without fear of getting arrested. Some of the examples of people being arrested for just calling out or holding up a placard are unacceptable in a domocratic society. Throwing things or violent behaviour is a different matter because someone could be injured.

Well it does if Charles is paying for it all. Not really a slimmed down monarchy as has been said. They could after all all have entered the church quietly, without all the fuss. You know like ordinary people do. It is all part of showing you how special they all are. Even Andrew, carefully exiting last, sandwiched between Edward and Anne's husband.

The congregation, ordinary people and all, enter by the main door; should the royal family creep in through a side entrance?
This will no doubt astonish you; it is actually the public, probably including a few ordinary people, who wait as the family enter and exit because, unbelievably, they enjoy seeing the royal family.

Anniebach Mon 10-Apr-23 13:20:51

Slimmed down monarchy? Should Charles banish nieces, nephews, cousins from family gatherings?

And criticism of them entering a church together , should they arrive at 15 minute intervals ?

Nanatoone Mon 10-Apr-23 13:37:56

I’m on the fence about monarchy. I think Andrew and H&M have brought them into disrepute. On the other hand and elected second chamber would be good. One thing I like is the position of Head of State is at least stable. I won’t be watching all the proceedings but will dip in and out. I like the historical link it brings .

Actually it is rather odd as the RF exit through the side entrance and Camilla seems to be leaving before the service finishes. You can hear the Lord's Prayer in the background.

Very few people there a few claps for Charles

I'm not on the fence but were the Royal Family to say they abdicated in toto I wouldn't blame them in the slightest!

I'm a pragmatic Royalist as the Monarchy does not have the power it had in centuries past, Royal Assent is a formality and I like ceremonial traditions.

Perhaps the Church in England should be disestablished.

And I definitely believe we should have an elected Upper Chamber. I wouldn't say that the aristocracy should be abolished but that they should not have an automatic right to become a member of an Upper Chamber without election. Neither should an outgoing Prime Minister have the right to grant peerages as it is cronyism.

Orders of Merit or some kind to honour those who have contributed to society are an excellent idea .

Biglouis you say cut down to size as in Scandinavia but when a family visit to Denmark coincided with a royal christening (I think) wherever we went everyone was glued to their TV screens.

We are strange, imo, the way, as a nation, we obsess with celebrity

As regards ‘obsessing with celebrity’, please speak for yourself!
