In what way is it a con?

It's not a con 🙂.
It's gambling and money does go to good causes.

I've won small amounts over the years although I don't play it regularly.
It seems very difficult to win these days with so many people playing. But I don't agree that it's a con. And they do help good causes a lot.

I won 120 pounds about 20 years ago but as I haven't done the lottery in many years I haven't won anything.

A former colleague's uncle won a few million on the lottery some years back, and our current next-door neighbours won a considerable sum on the postcode lottery, which is why they bought the house next door!

Although I didn’t know the person a local lad won several million on the lottery several years ago. He bought up quite a few houses on a new estate, poorish area in north east england, so he could well afford to treat quite a few members of his wider family.

I always thought I would hate to live on a housing estate which was dominated by one family.

I worked with a young lady who won £72,000, she was engaged to be married, so this helped with wedding costs.....but her new husband waited a few months and then took off with his new conquest, so it also payed for a divorce !!
I also know someone who won £305,000 on the postcode lottery.....sadly none of their good fortune rubbed off on me, boo hoo.
I still do the lottery and the postcode lottery, keeping fingers crossed that my turn will come, just a simple amount would suit me.

One of my colleagues had a big win in 2005. Never said the exact amount but she and her husband both quit work (in their 50's). I think it was less than a million because it didn't change their lives (except for quitting work.) She's the same friend as always. I also won £1000 on the postcode lottery during the pandemic.

Why is it a con? We have a family syndicate. We all pay in £1 a week. So far only small wins, but I understand probability and have no expectations of a large win.

I play the lottery, of course it’s not a “con” it’s a gamble/raffle - I’ve won £140 as my largest prize and husband won similar. It’s gambling except instead of profits going in a bookies pockets it goes to good causes - I wouldn’t play if I thought it was a con and am well aware that the odds of winning a huge prize are very small

I have won some small amounts from time to time, but nut a significant amount.

I played from the start of the National Lottery and used birthdays as the numbers and I have been putting theses on each week. This was the worst thing to do as I now feel that I have to keep using these numbers in case they all come out one week

Yes, it really doesn't make sense to feel comitted to doing the same numbers every week, which is why I always do the "lucky dip" type where they randomly select the numbers for you.

There was a family local to me that won a huge amount on euro millions. They did all the publicity photos then disappeared from view.

I've won small amounts every now and again, but never more than £50. I do two tickets a week, one midweek and one on Saturday.
I do win Lucky Dips very regularly, once for each of the last three draw for example, but I'd rather have the money!

I knew someone who won $20 million a few years back

Many years ago one of my staff rang and said she wasn't coming back because she had won the lottery
£2 mill + , that was in early lottery days, she didn't have much so it was a blessing

I do it all the time as can't find work and need money for vet bills now the insurance company has issued an exclusion on skin problems ( he has had 3 ops in 4 years for lumps)

I win a bit occasionally and hope for a biggish win one day. I don't get out much, so it's my entertainment.

A friend’s son-in-law won a few hundred thousand pounds about 15 years ago. He’s not a nice person, it was a bit galling. My friend’s boiler hadn’t worked for best part of a year so no heating or hot water as she couldn’t afford to fix it. He was a heating engineer yet he wouldn’t pay or help to fix it. She’s a lovely person and often helped out with the grandchildren. Horrid man!

An old schoolfriend of my daughter's won £1million on the lottery a few years ago.

I know someone who won £100,000m0n a scratch card. Personally I wouldn't have told anyone except my nearest and dearest.

I have a good friend who won many millions. They have done a tremendous amount of good in the local area, donating large sums of money to a number of charities.

My son knows someone who's relative won quite a large amount...a five figure sum. I've won £20 on a scratch card but that was a few years ago and in all honesty I rarely buy one.

I asked my neighbour how her plumber was getting on in her kitchen. She said he'd suddenly downed tools and disappeared. His father had just won £11 million on the lottery.

I know two Lottery millionaires, one from the draw, one from a scratchcard.

The odds on winning are, obviously, very long, but they are the same for everyone who enters. There has, as far as I am aware, never been a case of a fiddled or illegal win. The amount of money given to the 12 Lottery Distributors www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/funding/distributors is determined by a strictly monitored process, and grants can be looked up on their individual websites. The issuing of the licence for the Lottery Operator is reasonably transparent.

My son won 7K a few years ago but otherwise no.
