14 Units

Does it hit the sweet spot. Are you over or under? Does it matter to what you want to do in the future? I am restricting my alcohol intake. The person I would like to be goes running at dawn. The person I am chills out and carries a glass of wine round my garden in the evening. Where do you fit in?

FranA

It seems I am definitely in the minority as I struggle to keep to below the recommended 14 units.

Me too, tho not by a long way.

henetha Wed 26-Apr-23 23:26:15

I've never felt the need for much alcohol really. I'm not completely teetotal though, but I'd rather have a milkshake.

Oh dear, just me then. Probably don't exceed the 14 units per week, but in the summer I spend many a happy hour or two drinking wine in the garden, nothing quite like it....friends, chilled wine and a comfy garden chair in the sunshine.

Maggiemaybe Thu 27-Apr-23 07:28:21

On a normal week I’ll have the 14 units over 5 evenings, usually wine or a flavoured gin and tonic. I do exercise 5 mornings a week as well for at least 30 minutes, but definitely not at dawn. smile The rule book’s locked away on high days and holidays.

I’m happy to replace a beer or cider with a 0% these days - most of them are very good. But I haven’t found a decent non-alcoholic wine yet.

Do many of us feel a 'need' for alcohol Henetha? Its more that there are some things that taste nice, but unfortunately have alcohol in them.

In my case red wine, cider, vermouth, sloe gin (at Christmas) although I do now get a non-alcoholic Martini, but it is a bit too sweet for my taste.

sassysaysso Thu 27-Apr-23 08:35:10

No alcohol for 12 years. A potter around my garden at 6am on a bright summer’s day with a cup of tea is bliss.

Oh, I think more do feel the 'need' than you probably realise. Any medical professional will tell you that people are usually very 'economical with the truth' when it comes to admitting how much alcohol they actually drink. 'Mum drinking' is actually quite a known problem these days - and not just among young mums.

I always find medical professionals are sceptical, when I have said I neither smoke, nor drink.
Having COPD, is is often mistakenly thought, I must have been a smoker, despite having never smoked in my life.

I seem to have gone off wine in the last year or so. Living on my own, once I opened a bottle I had to have a glass every night to finish it. I much prefer a gin and tonic now, but I don't think I've had a drink for at least a fortnight.
Perhaps it's something that happens as you get older, the taste for alcohol diminishes. Also I don't socialise as much as I used to.

That’s my take on it as well. I don’t have the tolerance for alcohol that I used to and since I moved, my new social circle doesn’t drink very much at all so I just go with the flow.

I also find that not drinking wine so often helps to keep my weight in check.

Witzend Thu 27-Apr-23 09:33:32

I used to have a very small glass of wine every night when cooking the dinner. And probably a G&T plus a couple of glasses of wine when eating out.

But after a very nasty infection recently everything started tasting weird or horrible - even water! - so I haven’t really fancied any alcohol since - but did try half a glass of white wine when out for lunch last week - it tasted all right so I dare say I’m getting back to normal. 🙂

Recovering alcoholic and have not had a drink for over 30 years…

henetha Thu 27-Apr-23 09:47:31

Sadly, I think some people do feel the need for alcohol. I'm thinking of a couple of people in particular, whom I know, who cannot go anywhere without having to have a drink. And drink a lot at home too.
I suspect there is quite a lot of alcohol dependency about.

PinkCosmos Thu 27-Apr-23 09:56:13

I'm with you FranA - but probably more than 14 units a week.

I have fallen into a very bad habit of drinking almost every night. Not to the point of drunkenness and not even merry.

I really need to break the habit because that is what it is. I only drink wine and all the non alcoholic ones all taste too sweet to me.

paddyann54 Thu 27-Apr-23 10:09:19

I use alcohol in cooking does that count ? Brandy .whisky and wines in sauces or to cook in .My cousin ,a recovering alcoholic still eats food that has alcohol in it as its burnt off in the cooking.
I usually have a bottle of wine beside the cooker that I've opened to put in bolognaise or stroganoff or chicken pie and unless my OH finishes the bottle it goes down the sink a few days later .
A friend who always buys me very expensive brandy although he knows I gave up drink years ago was offended when he heard that his brandy was in his steak diane ...I think he believed I was a secret drinker ! In pubs there was always someone who would insist you "HAVE A DRINK "
Thankfully that seems to have changed here .

Blossoming Thu 27-Apr-23 10:20:55

I don’t have 14 units a year, let alone in a week. I enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner if it’s a special occasion but I usually just drink water.

Blossoming Thu 27-Apr-23 10:23:51

PaddyAnn54 you can freeze leftover wine in ice cube trays and use it in cooking at a later date.

karmalady Thu 27-Apr-23 10:27:06

I don`t need alcohol, never have as I don`t need the alcohol boost, not even when I was a student. A tiny bottle of wine at christmas is all I have. I am very happy within myself, lots of hobbies are better than alcohol

lixy Thu 27-Apr-23 10:27:17

I can't tolerate alcohol at all now, and haven't had any for at least 30 years. Just as well maybe as it will probably balance out to 14 units over my lifetime following a mis-spent youth!

annodomini Thu 27-Apr-23 10:37:38

A small glass of bubbly for celebrations; a dry white wine usually made into a spritzer with soda water, when out for a meal. That's all. I never drink on my own as I don't enjoy alcohol that much anyway.

Well done you👌.
I have a good friend who is in denial about her drinking.
I do wish she would get on the program.

fancythat Thu 27-Apr-23 10:41:51

I tell a doctor 6 units. It is somewhere thereabouts.
Bible says drink a little wine, so I do.
I wouldnt do that if I was an alchoholic.
If I start to feel tempted to drink more, I then not drink any at all for 3 days. Seems to solve things.

halfpint1 Thu 27-Apr-23 10:42:33

My mother had dementia, I gave up alcohol, there is a link

Visgir1 Thu 27-Apr-23 10:46:28

Due to my AF, I have cut back considerably.
Wine brings on my AF but the odd G&T I can get away with.
Gutted!

merlotgran Thu 27-Apr-23 11:17:35

Now, why does that make me want to cry? 🤣🤣.
