14 Units

Does it hit the sweet spot. Are you over or under? Does it matter to what you want to do in the future? I am restricting my alcohol intake. The person I would like to be goes running at dawn. The person I am chills out and carries a glass of wine round my garden in the evening. Where do you fit in?

win. 👏👏👏👏

I don't think that people who drink more than 14 units are (generally speaking, based on looking at responses here) going to be contributing to this post...

Me too FranA, really struggle to keep it under 21 at weekends only. Bit of a hedonist though smile

Life is far too short to count units of alcohol, I enjoy white wine, a good blush, champagne and vodka with either fresh orange juice or tonic.

Not all at the same time I hasten to add 🤣🍾🍸🍹

We have a beer and a glass of wine most nights. Have a lot more if we meet up with friends or family. We enjoy it.

Never been able to drink much. Anything over two glasses of wine and I feel ill. I don't drink spirits apart from a medicinal whisky when I have a cold. DH not much of a drinker either. My treat is a mini bottle of cava a couple of times a month. I'm sure no one believes me when I fill in forms asking about number of units I drink in a week. I'm amazed at how much DDs drink...

Smileless2012 Fri 28-Apr-23 13:09:02

I have no idea how many units a week I drink and feel as GrannyGravy does that life's too short to count them.

I started drinking more after my husband died three years ago.Sat on my own every night watching TV a G and T every night seemed a good idea.I still have a double G and T every night which equates to 14 units. My Diabetic nurse is happy and so am I. However every six weeks or so I go completely alcohol free for one week to prove that I am not addicted to alcohol.
Every birthday and Christmas I ask my family to buy me gin as there is nothing else I need.

twinnytwin Fri 28-Apr-23 13:17:41

14 units is around 6 medium (174ml( glasses of wine or 6 pints of 4% beer. DH and I definitely drink more than that. We used to drink every evening but have no committed to have three booze-free days per week. We're off to our local for our usual Friday night gang meet-up and I'll have 3 large white wines for sure. We're meeting old friends for lunch tomorrow so I'll be over 14 units for sure. My parents were daily drinkers and lived to 93 and 95. Dad enjoyed a drink right up to the end.

Jay21 Fri 28-Apr-23 13:39:18

So you drink wine then!😀

enabenn Fri 28-Apr-23 13:40:44

A glass of wine now and then suits me. I do not like it when other people drink too much and become loud and abusive. Some people can take drink well others not so well.

ANMI52 Fri 28-Apr-23 13:44:54

Usually under, but occasionally over. Each to their own 😉

LizzieDrip Fri 28-Apr-23 13:46:33

It seems I am definitely in the minority as I struggle to keep to below the recommended 14 units.

I’m in the minority too than Fran. I love a glass of wine. I’m probably between 14 and 20 units a week. Shock, horror, I hear people cry😱 However, I recently read a report about a large scale, reputable study done on thousands of people, that showed drinking a third of a bottle of wine per day has no detrimental impact on health. A third of a bottle of white wine per day equates to approx 21 units per week. There!

Why do so many people seem apologetic and appear to want to justify how much they drink?

I'm sure everybody has read the literature about alcohol. Admittedly, it's contradictory, but there isn't much doubt that habitual over-consumption is detrimental to health. If people want to take that risk, fair enough. Just get on with it.

However, please don't be judgmental about those who don't drink any alcohol. I don't and haven't done for years. I don't miss it in the slightest, but I get a tad irritated by people who think I'm some kind of party pooper.

Cambia Fri 28-Apr-23 14:04:54

Oh I am bad!! 14-20 units per week! We nearly always have wine with dinner in the evening. Try to have two days a week off but don’t worry too much about it. France, Spain etc all have higher recommendations and Canada now recommends only 2 units a week! Who knows and where did 14 units come from?
My biggest problem is I love cooking and my meals nearly always deserve a glass of wine with them!
It’s not a problem when we have baked beans or fish and chips but that isn't very often.

And vice versa. By our age people should make their own choices, in full knowledge of the consequences, and should have learned not to judge people who make different choices to their own.

Some weeks I would be over, other weeks I don't drink at all. I am a social drinker more than anything, but sometimes I do buy a bottle of wine and have a couple of glasses in the evening with crisps and olives.

Gundy Fri 28-Apr-23 14:37:10

I have no idea what 14 units measure up to - one drink, two? Fourteen drinks?

Here’s what I know - when I worked (it was stressful work) I came home and had a scotch most every night. Now that I’m retired I can easily go for a week or two without any wine or scotch.

I kind of miss it but have lost some weight as it’s calorie loaded. These days totally a social drinker when I’m out for dinner or at someone’s home, which is a couple times a week.

At home I totally get off on watered down Gatorade.
Cheers!

I think I'd get on better with the person you are than the person you'd like to be, Fran! Interesting that most of the responses are from those who don't drink or limit it? 😇

I’m saying nothing Nannylion

A unit of alcohol equates to roughly half-a-pint of beer at 4%, or a single measure (25ml) of spirits at 40%. A small glass of wine (125ml) at 12.5% would be 1.5 units, a large glass of wine (250)ml would be 3 units.

Valels Fri 28-Apr-23 14:51:09

I love a glass, or 2, of wine and have a regular order with Naked Wines- it makes me happy when the Naked delivery man knocks at the front door! I'm definitely more of a glass of wine in the garden than a run in the morning sort of person. However, I do keep under the 14 units limit (just!)

A proper bore that is me, as I never drink alcohol it just does not appeal to me. I came from a household with Irish parents and many close family living near by. I am not saying the Irish are big drinkers but they do like to give a good welcome to any one that visits the house. (Actually the women did not overdo it on the drink) Our family home would have several bottles of good whiskey, plus brandy, bottle of gin, bottle of Baileys, sherry, advocat, vodka, Creme de Menthe, Tia Maria. and a few more selections of cocktails. All the drink was kept in an unlocked large cabinet and came out as and when the need for a drink happened. All the family were fulltime workers but when the need for a little party came along they liked to enjoy themselves.

But, who is counting? Who cares. One of my pleasures is a lovely chilled rose or fizz or 2. I could easily do without but why should I.

When I was a child my mother was advised by her doctor (before NHS) to have a Guiness a day. The advice she followed and she lived until 92. I have followed that advice and am 100 next week. I also have a small glass of RED wine with my dinner on the advice of a doctor in a French hospital.
