Does it hit the sweet spot. Are you over or under? Does it matter to what you want to do in the future? I am restricting my alcohol intake. The person I would like to be goes running at dawn. The person I am chills out and carries a glass of wine round my garden in the evening. Where do you fit in?

Life is far too short to count units of alcohol, I enjoy white wine, a good blush, champagne and vodka with either fresh orange juice or tonic.

Not all at the same time I hasten to add 🤣🍾🍸🍹

I'm disappointed GG.

Well I have been known to have a couple of V & T’s before dinner, wine with and fizz to finish 🙀

I used to drink wine with my evening meals, but stopped when I wanted to lose weight, which worked. I still like the occasional glass at home or with a meal when out.

I also like a cold lager in the garden in the summer when it is warm. (Not had this yet this year!).

A unit of alcohol equates to roughly half-a-pint of beer at 4%, or a single measure (25ml) of spirits at 40%. A small glass of wine (125ml) at 12.5% would be 1.5 units, a large glass of wine (250)ml would be 3 units.

But, who is counting? Who cares. One of my pleasures is a lovely chilled rose or fizz or 2. I could easily do without but why should I.

Someone asked what a unit of alcohol was - just trying to be helpful. I'm sure many people don't know.

I agree Casdon. I don't really care how much people drink or how much booze they have in their supermarket trolleys.

I'm just a bit bemused that so many posts are accompanied by some kind of justification. It's as though people think they're doing something they know they shouldn't, but they'll do it anyway. I don't really understand the psychology.

I have absolutely no reason to justify anything I do, whether that be drinking alcohol, gym membership or my shoe and handbag collection.

We only get one life and it is ours to live how we wish as long as we do not deliberately harm or offend anybody.

growstuff Fri 28-Apr-23 16:12:34

So why do you have to write that? You're justifying yourself.

Just drink whatever alcohol you want. You don't have to tell people why you do it. I couldn't care less whether you're a member of a gym or how many shoes and handbags you have either.

Meryleene Fri 28-Apr-23 16:13:59

Why would you feel the need to justify your alcohol intake when you consider it a normal part of your lifestyle to have a drink or two each evening, as long as it doesnt lead to excess.

Meryleene Fri 28-Apr-23 16:16:39

Perhaps Because people dont approve of money spending on luxuries or things they would think of as unneeded.

You may think it’s justifying, I think it’s me not giving a pink pig what others think of my lifestyle choices…

or a Tom Tit. 🥂

dogsmother Fri 28-Apr-23 16:40:03

Oh yum yes!
All in one go on Friday night in the pub, not wine nor yet at home either.
Guess that makes me a binge drinker 😜

Bijou

When I was a child my mother was advised by her doctor (before NHS) to have a Guiness a day. The advice she followed and she lived until 92. I have followed that advice and am 100 next week. I also have a small glass of RED wine with my dinner on the advice of a doctor in a French hospital.

Oh wow, 100yo, Bijou! That surely deserves a glass of 🥂, with or without alcohol.

Are you Gransnet’s first centenarian, I wonder? smile

I was told by my GP and midwife to have half a pint of Guinness every day during my first pregnancy to avoid having iron tablets/injections.

I haven’t drunk alcohol for nearly 20 years

I've got just over 30 years without any alcohol

Arto1s Fri 28-Apr-23 17:21:04

I know I drink way too much red wine. One of these days I’ll try cutting back, before it’s too late!

Blondiescot Fri 28-Apr-23 17:27:29

My mother spent the last few weeks of her pregnancy with me in the maternity hospital, and they used to come round every evening with a bottle of Sweetheart Stout for the mums-to-be as it was supposedly good for them.

I'm in your minority. Life is for living. Made it this far ......

I think I might just have to grow old disgracefully. However I am still contemplating the options. Hours in the gym or lunches out with friends and where is the happy medium?

They aren’t mutually exclusive options. I quite like doing both.

Lizbethann55 Fri 28-Apr-23 18:04:47

I like a glass of red wine. I like a G&T. I like a glass of fizz. I like a light beer in summer and I like sharing a jug of sangria when on holiday. They taste much nicer than lemonade or coke. But I don't NEED them . I find this presumption that if we like alcohol we must have a problem a bit offensive.

Greciangirl Fri 28-Apr-23 18:05:48

Well! What a virtuous lot of grans you all are.

Hardly anyone drinks, and the few that do are definitely under the recommended guidelines.

Personally, I enjoy two glasses of wine on Fridays and Saturdays only.

When I was much younger I consumed an awful lot more.
But being married to an alcoholic ( now deceased), I gave up drinking for ten years but went back to drinking sensibly after he died.

I don’t crave alcohol during the week, but enjoy my four glasses of a weekend.

SueDonim Fri 28-Apr-23 18:12:17

Oh, I forgot to comment on alcohol. I drink very little nowadays, it just doesn’t do anything much for me. I haven’t lost any weight due to my abstinence, which is a bit annoying!

We drank most regularly when we were living abroad. Life could be difficult at times and a glass of wine in the evening was a way to relax, I suppose. I grew up with a Welsh chapel background and drink just wasn’t a thing in our house. Mum and dad would have a bottle of cider once in a blue moon and a sherry at Christmas.

Their neighbours over the road, though, were two elderly ladies, sisters, I think. They had a delivery from a local vintners every week! I recall very clearly seeing the liveried van arrive. They must have been half-pickled all the time but they seemed to survive well enough.

Saggi Fri 28-Apr-23 18:37:20

I swim three times a week and walk 3 miles a day ….so wine in my garden is deserved ! As no doubt yours is !? AND …if it’s not deserved …my mum used to say “ have it now and deserve it later” … worked for her as she lived til 93.

Saggi Fri 28-Apr-23 18:39:23

Oh and it’s the truth ….Guinness is good for you! Full of iron.

Marydoll Fri 28-Apr-23 18:45:35

Many years ago, I worked in NHS finance.
Part of my job was to pay the invoices for Guinness, Sweetheart stout, whisky etc.
It was coded under Pharmacy and was dispensed as a pick me up for patients.

REWIRING Fri 28-Apr-23 18:55:30

In my sixties and still work full time - my job can be stressful so at the end of the week a couple of Friday night G&T’s are a treat - then share a bottle wine with hubbie on Saturday - that is my lot - no alcohol Sunday to Thursday- I think I would be under 14 units!! And am in the swimming pool at 7am in the week too
