I saw these Scottish emojis on Facebook. I thought they were very accurate.

Charleygirl5 Thu 15-Jun-23 12:50:33

I have never heard of gallus before. I come from East Fife.

Blondiescot Thu 15-Jun-23 12:52:14

Marydoll Thu 15-Jun-23 14:00:20

I believe you can access them in the Apple Store, but I cant find them for Android.
I'm bealing/ beeling?

Ailidh Thu 15-Jun-23 14:11:13

Great!

My parents used "awfy gallus" but it hasn't entered my vocabulary. I do use "drookit", tho! ☔

Visgir1 Thu 15-Jun-23 14:22:08

Great to see these. I could have used these 40 yrs ago.
I married a Scot all my in laws lived/live in Scotland. My dear old MiL came from "The Kingdom of Fife" as she was proud to say.
Well, some of the terminology she used, total mystery to me, for several years.
I would just look blank as my dear FiL explained what she was going on about.
When I went out with her ( to do her messages) she always introduced me as her English DIL. Bless her

I don't think they're available on Android, unfortuately, Marydoll. All we Android users will be fair scunnered at that!

Bodach Thu 15-Jun-23 14:52:15

Google tells me that the term 'beamer' refers to blushing with embarrassment, but it's not an expression I have ever encountered - in Scotland or elsewhere. Every day's a school day...

Daddima Thu 15-Jun-23 14:56:26

I love them! When I was in hospital waiting for a repeatedly cancelled operation, I giggled at my Indian doctor asking every morning if I was still ‘ wabbit and scunnered’

Beamer was a very common expression, when I was a child in Glasgow.

I seem to remember Paw Broon wearing galluses (braces)

Well, they're a bunch of eejits and need a guid skelp for discrimination against android users!

In Glasgow gallus means very bold.

DamaskRose Thu 15-Jun-23 15:31:41

I’d heard of gallus and taps aff but didn’t know what they meant - have lived in the north east of Scotland for 37 years! Having said that there are many other words/expressions used here but not in other parts of Scotland. Are these mainly Glasgow/central belt?

Marydoll Thu 15-Jun-23 16:14:35

Taps aff, not a pretty sight, especially with peely wally Glaswegians.

Aveline Thu 15-Jun-23 16:17:34

Agree re 'taps aff'. I've seen some awful sights today.

Blondiescot Thu 15-Jun-23 16:21:16

I remember a very hot day in a local town when a work colleague and I popped out to get some sandwiches for lunch. There were a lot of 'taps aff' that day and she remarked "No' a bonny sight, is it - not a pound o' them hinging the right way!" grin

In Glasgow gallus means very bold.

In the immortal words of the song: "Oh, ye're ma wee gallus bloke nae mair..."

wildswan16 Thu 15-Jun-23 17:21:17

wild, unmanageable, bold; impish, mischievous, cheeky is rthe meaning often used in Angus where I grew up .

bridie54 Thu 15-Jun-23 22:23:41

Loved the emojis and reading all the comments on this thread.
I just love the word scunnered.

And since it's caught the attention of Scots grans, can I do a wee cheeky hi-jack and point you in the direction of a planned meet-up in St Andrews. It's on the meet up Forum.

Marydoll Thu 15-Jun-23 22:40:58

Oh you are gallus, Bridie. 😂
