Drag Queens

Why are drag queens being booked to read to children in libraries, schools etc? What is the point? I genuinely don't understand.

If it's to be more inclusive, surely it would be better to ask little people like Ellie Simmonds, people who are deaf, etc ... ie. people who have a "condition" rather than people who just like to dress up?

Obviously it’s everyone’s prerogative to be on this site or not, but I think when I was 48 (almost 30 yrs ago!) , teaching, and with young children at home, it’s the last place I’d have time for, or choose to be

I was describing myself……..confused

VioletSky Mon 26-Jun-23 16:25:25

One of many things that apply to me?

I haven't mentioned any personal details on this thread.

This is why it's not ok to drag things people have said about themselves across threads. It makes things personal, they may not be things disclosed to a the individual repeating and people get things wrong or accuse others of things that aren't true.

This is why I've left an entire section of gransnet threads.

eazybee, Redbridge Council issued this statement

During an event put on at the library today there was a performance by a Carnival Arts Company. Unfortunately one of the animal costumes was inappropriate which we were not aware of at the time of booking. We deeply apologise for the offence caused. This is being looked into.

I reiterate, it was not a drag queen but was an event that was supposed to encourage children to attend the library and promote reading. The photographs provided by Doodledog are however drag queens.

Why judge anyone on how they choose to spend their free time?

I’ve just seen the bloke in a furrie suit. Despicable of the Library / Council/ everyone involved.

I also apologise for any upset that I have accidentally caused Doodledog and VS

FannyCornforth Mon 26-Jun-23 16:34:12

The bloke was a furrie

Blondiescot Mon 26-Jun-23 16:37:56

God

Whose god? Your god? What about those who have other gods - or those like me, who have none?

No need to apologise

Nothing at all wrong with being dyslexic, just didn't understand where that came from

VioletSky Mon 26-Jun-23 16:43:37

I don't think Furries are related to drag?

I remember going to gay clubs when I was young and the ladies loo being filled with drag queens with stunning makeup. Some of the nicest people I've ever met but will steal your lipstick.

And of course anyone would need a DBS check to work with children.

I still haven't really understood why it is a problem, because lots of children's tv includes colourful characters, sometimes dressed in drag, like Mr Tumble and I've never heard an outcry before now

Blondiescot Mon 26-Jun-23 16:43:42

Sorry Blondiescot I can’t find any evidence of ‘drag’ where males don’t dress as a parody of women.
How is this a 'parody' of a woman?

Beetlejuice Mon 26-Jun-23 16:47:14

Is that person doing story hour to small children Blondiescot?
These are....

GrannyGravy13 Mon 26-Jun-23 16:48:03

If these men are interested in getting young children interested in books why can’t they just turn up in casual every day clothes to read to the children?

Why the need to drag up ?

Have they all been DBS checked/approved?

Smileless2012 Mon 26-Jun-23 16:49:21

No you're a TA VS so involved in the education of children which you often mention.

You'd think so wouldn't you eazybee but it appears not in this case.

I'm sure you're right in that we'd have more sense Molly but it's an interesting thought isn't it.

So? What relevance does that have to anything on this thread?

eazybee Mon 26-Jun-23 16:51:15

Thank you Beetlejuice.
I wonder what sort of person thinks this costume, bare buttocks and all, was appropriate, and why?

VioletSky Mon 26-Jun-23 16:56:45

I screenshot this from the guardian article posted on the thread as I think we need to be careful we aren't being unfair with this one

Beetlejuice Mon 26-Jun-23 16:58:44

Heaven knows eazybee! If you have a look at the photo I attached at 16.47 today, top left corner, you'll see something equally inappropriate for anyone to be wearing in a public place, let alone in a school or library with young children. And I have no idea why some people are completely comfortable with it either.

Smileless2012 Mon 26-Jun-23 16:59:17

Perhaps some thought you'd give an opinion as someone involved in the teaching of, and no doubt reader of stories to children VS; why so defensive?

Personal information one chooses to make public on GN is there for anyone who reads it, and I'm not aware that if it's thought to be relevant to a thread or threads where it isn't actually mentioned, that it's against guidelines to refer to it.

I'm sure GNHQ will correct me if I'm wrong but there certainly doesn't appear to be an issue when a thread previously started by a poster, is not only referred too but a link too is provided, when they start or comment on another thread.

I've seen this happen.

A feminist view of drag. Which also mentions black-face.

I know the OP is about drag queens reading stories to children - but drag culture itself is inevitably being examined.

I imagine that the defense of drag would include arguments that say this performance of femininity is so exaggerated that it doesn’t mock women so much as it mocks a cartoonish version of extreme femininity, but I’m unconvinced that turning women into extreme, cartoonish charicatures that are to be mocked is particularly progressive — rather, it feels regressive to me. There must be a reason women don’t do this to men — turning masculinity into entertainment or a joke, that is.

How is that drag as opposed to TW?

Smileless2012 Mon 26-Jun-23 17:04:22

hmm well it's personal opinion isn't it and I don't think that drag is an exploration of gender especially with the more outrageous drag queens.

VioletSky Mon 26-Jun-23 17:07:35

This is my personal information, it belongs to me to share with others

Being a TA has no relevance

I'm not organising drag story time

It's not happening in schools as far as I am aware, parents are taking their children by their own choice

We don't teach anything about drag or LGBTQ in KS1

I will always follow my training. Children are always taught in such a way as to remain open minded and principled, of course British values of Individual Liberty, Tolerance and Respect are taught but that's the curriculum. I don't know what people think is happening in schools or why I would have any say over it anyway or any control over what happens elsewhere...

eazybee Mon 26-Jun-23 17:10:33

I posted before I saw the other photos.

My God.

Or, so as not to cause offence,

Ye Gods.

Smileless2012 Mon 26-Jun-23 17:11:32

When you share personal information VS it is shared and you cannot monitor when, where, why and by whom it can be referred too.

If it is a problem, best not to share to begin with.
