My Ancestry DNA arrived yesterday!

Amazing isn't it?
Mine has thrown up a few "cousins" whose grandparents weren't who they thought they were and I was a clue towards discovering the extra maritals.
It's also interesting to see that two people who are the same relation to me can have wildly different amounts of DNA in common with me.
I've fed the info into other websites too to get as many links as possible.

I thought that too Fanny, but I'm 1% Spanish!

Apparently I’m 24% Scottish, but as I don’t have any Scots in my tree (that goes way, way back) I don’t think I’ll ever find out where that DNA comes from. Someone bed hopped I think.

This definitely appeals to me, but I was always wary of trying it.
Years ago, DD was doing a project in high school and we fished out the grandparents birth certificates.
I couldn't quite fathom, what transpired, but it looked like my paternal grandfather married his deceased wife's sister. I would love to find out more.

It is very interesting! I had been on a couple of years with lots of matches particularly on my Irish side. Then out of the blue after one Xmas I received a message from someone who was a “close family” match. She had been gifted an Ancestry kit for Xmas.

It's terrific. I had mine done a few years ago - found some distant "half cousins" in Australia. I have some Viking heritage - I know my ancestors came from the East Anglia area due to researching my family history, which suffered many Viking raids. Also some Western Europe (perhaps that's due to the Romans??) Plus I also have Irish and Scottish DNA.

Fanny - I thought I was just plain Anglo Saxon but I'm not. You would love it, I'm sure.

They went their separate ways. Her Mum brought her up but died suddenly when she was just 13. I believe she went into care but she did say it was an unhappy time.

I did it a few years ago my heritage is English Irish Scots Welsh and a small percent Central Asia. I think a bit of Viking from Silk Road ravages as most of them are Scandinavian names.

It’s all very interesting a few names I am familiar with as cousins. I won’t be getting in touch though there are far too many of them.

We are waiting for DH’s results at the moment. He wants to find out how much Irish in his ancestry. I was stunned at mine. I wanted to find out how much Indian I had as my grandmother was Anglo-Indian. In fact, that accounts for only 13% while I am 18% Scandinavian from my grandfather’s side who hailed from the Potteries!

This has given me an idea for my OH. Is it expensive?

My ancestry is quite boring - nearly all Anglo-Saxon and Celtic, with 4% Iberian which I think could be from a Spaniard washed up on the West Coast of Scotland when the storm hit the Spanish Aarmada. At least that's the best explanation I can think of.

I’ve got a lot of Welsh, a lot of Scandinavian, some Scottish and the rest English. I was surprised because I thought I would have a lot more English. I know where the Welsh comes from but the fact that it is on both sides is unexpected. My grandma used to say ‘cariad’ from her mother so I knew that wasn’t English ! I have met up with some distant Australian cousins, we had a lovely time together.

£79 is full price. The more expensive one adds genetic traits, like health ones, which I don't think can be thorough enough to be worth the extra.

There are often special offers, I paid much less.

One of the best things I ever did was having my dna tested a couple of years ago. It immediately threw up a first cousin once removed (our grandmothers were sisters) who lives in Canada and it just happens that her hobby is genealogy. I was an adopted child and she has found out so much about my birth family that it is amazing.

I'd lost touch with my American cousin in Texas and he showed up in my results..wonderful, he and his wife are coming over this summer..
