I know that I will be "flamed" for what I am about to write but I am so cross I care not.

My thirty something daughter and her boyfriend are currently homeless. They are unable, at present, to be housed because of housing shortage. What makes me so cross is that people who have never paid a penny into the community pot and most likely never will, are being housed and fed because they are exploiting the system and come into the country the back way.

Does it not strike anyone else that people whose ancestors helped to build our wealth and services are not considered as important because they did not sneak into the country on a small boat?

I am beyond furious.

Freya You needto update yourself on modern scholarship on the Vikings. They may have started as raiders, but after that it is much more complicated. Same applies to Romans, Anglo-Saxons, or even the Dutch takeover in 1688.

Did Freya say that the Vikings and others did more than start out as raiders?
And I would dispute your reference to ‘the Dutch takeover’. William and Mary were invited to rule, they did not ‘take over’.

Local authorities have responsibilities, but not enough money to fulfil them all.
My son-in-law runs a building company which prioritises social housing, but several of his proposals have been turned down by the LA. in favour of expensive housing schemes. I don’t know why.
There is so much that is wrong with the housing situation in this country. It is hard for anyone to get suitable accommodation, especially the most vulnerable.

Who invited them? Certainly not James II. From the book I was reading recently, the idea that the nobility as a whole invited them to come and replace JII, is the story that was promulgated at the time and has since been accepted, but it was actually much more a hole in the corner affair with the invitation and 'invasion' being made by quite a small group of whig peers www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/civil_war_revolution/glorious_revolution_01.shtml

Invasion? They were invited by parliament,

Thank you to e veryone who expressed their views. I promise that this is not an inflammatory post - I was/am very cross and it showed.

I do not want to share details about my daughter because a lot of people I know do use Gransnet. One of the difficulties we face that along with learning problems my daughter has great mistrust of those asking questioning her health and problems. I have explained, at great length, that they are not being nosy and difficult. Details are needed to be kept for ongoing help and to make sure that the right help is given to the right people. However, on a difficult day she is hard to persuade! We are approaching various authorities and charities to ask advice.

When I have - I hope good news - about this problem I will post again because I understand very well that many people with health and mental problems have a harder time of it. There are many worse off than we, I imagine. Again, thank you all for your time.
