Dated song lyrics

I've just been listening to Young Girl (Gary Puckett) in the radio and the lyrics now sound decidedly dodgy? Apparently Tom Jones is no longer allowed to sing Delilah as it glorifies domestic violence. And Wives And Lovers (Jack Jones) makes me very cross.
Any more you can think of? I'm not seriously bothered - they're all cracking good tunes!

‘Young Girl’ has always ‘sounded dodgy’.

It’s blatantly about underage sex, at best; paedophilia at worst - ‘my love for you is way out of line’

Yes, many lyrics are definitely 'dodgy' but we still enjoy singing and listening to them. In fact Delilah and Young Girl are often sung at out Tuneless choir sessions. They are fun to sing and the choir leader has mentioned the dodgy lyrics but we still sing them and as with all choirs, feel better for it! There are many songs with risqué lyrics but none come to mind at the moment. Will have a think and come back 🤔

I don't really think that Young Girl is dodgy, he is sending her away.

NotSpaghetti Wed 26-Jul-23 07:38:30

I think it is interpreted as dodgy but I agree he is sending her away.

But would you have listened kitty? grin

Slight misunderstanding about Tom Jones and "Delilah". It was decided it should no longer be considered an "official" Welsh Rugby anthem and sung at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.
Tom Jones actually performed it quite recently in a concert at Cardiff Castle.

It does imply that the young girl is leading him on - and she must go "before he changes his mind"
I don't think that would be acceptable now but I first heard it when I was 16 and quite liked the idea of going out with an older boy!

I agree, it's someone seriously trying to stop himself getting too close to someone who is under age. Same with Sting and "Don't stand so cose to me"

I have a children's tape with "Ernie" on it. Whilst listening to it in the car with the DGC recently, I decided it was most unsuitable. I think it goes over their heads, though.

I know the basic idea behind Stand By Your Man is not especially bad but it implies that a woman should just put up with any old behaviour (no matter how bad) simply because, 'he's just a man'.

Take Another Piece of My Heart takes it further as it condones that a man's bad behaviour is acceptable 'if it makes you (him) feel good.'

I feel these songs romanticise bad relationships. Abuse, walking on egg-shells, etc aren't part of a good, healthy partnership. A good marriage should be as comfy as an old pair of slippers. Just putting up with really bad things sticks in my craw, rather. Women are more able nowadays to say no to such nonsense.

Get Lucky by Daft Punk featuring Pharrel Williams and Nial Rodgers.

Released approximately 8 yrs ago, very catchy tune but lyrics relating to staying up/out until you get laid

Every Breath You Take by Police: the stalkers charter in a song. Lovebeigecardigans - I prefer the Sesame Street version " Stand by your can- give him some trash to cling to..." to encourage us not to drop litter.

I realise that I’m just mentioning ‘rude’ songs.
Sorry. I’ll stop it now!

Maggiemaybe Wed 26-Jul-23 09:19:06

Under My Thumb - I didn’t like it then, and I don’t know why it’s tolerated now.

My Shirona - which I liked till I listened properly to the lyrics. Yuck.

And Blurred Lines, which isn’t even that old. Double yuck.

nanna8 Wed 26-Jul-23 09:21:23

Willie Nelson’s Most Unoriginal Sin? Probably be an anthem now when I think about it but a tad risqué in it’s day.

eddiecat78 Wed 26-Jul-23 09:22:28

In case anyone doesn't know Wives and Lovers - Jack Jones is telling wives they have to look pretty when their husband comes home or he'll go off with his secretary!

Bella23 Wed 26-Jul-23 09:23:41

The Beatles classic "Please, Please Me", I was always singing it until a friend pointed out they are trying to persuade their girlfriend to go further sexually than she wants to if viewed in a certain way.
I still like the catchy tune though.
I agree about Frankie goes to Hollywood, "Relax don't "it again had provocative words.

A lot of songs wouldn’t pass the censors nowadays, but slipped by in the 40s to 80s.

Nowadays songs code/hide the message a bit more so that innocent lil ones won’t get it as much. However, no kids would have understood the message displayed in the 40s to 80s, mainly due to a lack of education about sexual violence and pedophilia.

Songs such as Stand By Your Man just were what was done and socially accepted, unless you were one of those workers, nothing more

CrochetBliss Wed 26-Jul-23 09:24:47

Nowadays kids play rude songs to impress friends
