Dated song lyrics

I've just been listening to Young Girl (Gary Puckett) in the radio and the lyrics now sound decidedly dodgy? Apparently Tom Jones is no longer allowed to sing Delilah as it glorifies domestic violence. And Wives And Lovers (Jack Jones) makes me very cross.
Any more you can think of? I'm not seriously bothered - they're all cracking good tunes!

One song that always annoyed me.... Warpaint. Basically a guy telling the girl he hates her make up, to go and wash it off, think it was the line 'Let me introduce you to a cake of soap!' lol

I love the song "Dont' Leave Me this Way" but later in the song the lyrics definitely make me feel uncomfortable - "Oh baby
My heart is full of love and desire for you
So come on down and do what you've got to do
You started this fire down in my soul
Now can't you see it's burning out of control
So come on down and satisfy the need in meCause only your good loving can set me free...."

I can't think of any examples of female singers telling men what to do! Surely there must be some

I drove all night.
That's one that's just wrong.

I drove all night to get to you, wake you from your sleep and make love to you. Is that alright?

Well, no. It's not alright with me!

Pennypie Wed 26-Jul-23 13:07:04

I would have to add "Stay with me" by the Faces. Horrible, sexist, downright nasty lyrics.

Always struck me as quite romantic.

That's one that I thought might be more acceptable now than it was!

I like Delilah, same reason as I like 24 Hours from Tulsa. As someone said, they're stories, and the narrators of stories are not always squeaky clean nor do they glorify their behaviour. Delilah doesn't say "I stabbed her, served her right", does it? And he asks for forgiveness, "before they come to break down the door". He accepts what's coming to him. If we're going to condemn Delilah for its content, we will have to condemn Bohemian Rhapsody for the same reason.

Following comments on Young Girl: have any of you ever read Lolita? I've read it three times at different stages of my life, and I found it deeply moving each time. I've heard many people say "disgusting, should have been banned" but I'm willing to bet none of these people have read it all the way through and just think it's glorifying paedophilia. It's anything but - it's the psychological journey of a man who knew every day that this was wrong and hated himself for it, but felt driven by it.

I've always raised an eyebrow at 'Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen '... even when I used to dance to it 🤨

Scottiebear Wed 26-Jul-23 13:39:09

'If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me' - good song, but wouldn't be released these days.
'If you've got to go, go now, or else you've go to stay all night' - another great song, but would be considered coercing now.
How about Dusty Springfields Wishing and Hoping - 'wear your hair just for him, cause you won't get him thinking and praying'.
We'd have lost out on a lot of great tunes if we'd have taken offence back in those days.

‘Take a look at her hair, it’s real. If you don’t believe what I say, just feel.’

It’s so awful, it’s funny. 😂

Agree. !! Blurred lines should Def not been released and luckily the agents and music producers are wising up. I was shocked when I read Delilah lyric’s recently as I saw Sir Tom in concert. All other ones mentioned just as awful , and even if we as young women enjoyed listening to them they shouldn’t be aired on radio now in my opinion. Brown sugar just dreadful too. ! My last aerobics class I asked for blurred lines [quietly asked] to not be played as pretty triggering from my16 year old self. I explained why to the instructor as I’ve reported the individual to the authorities and he was arrested recently! And theCPS have looked at the evidence/ case and as he admitted what’s he did 50 years ago , he may end up in court. Happy days!

Young girl was one of my favourite songs of that era . I was fifteen with a seventeen year old boyfriend who I adored . We were together six months and he never tried anything on with me . It was ‘our’ song

I was a Girl Guide more than 60 years ago and loved singing camp fire songs. 40 years later, when I became a Beaver Scout leader, I looked forward to teaching some of these songs to the children but soon realised how dated and inappropriate many of them now are. From "We are the Indians, tall and straight, in our feathers and warpaint" to "I wear my pink pyjamas, etc". "There was a Girl Guide went to camp" concludes with the advice not to share a bed with a Boy Scout! Now it's all about junk food - "A Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut". I wonder if that will ever be dated?

Maremia Wed 26-Jul-23 15:24:51

Despite it's upbeat music, always disliked the Mungo Jerry song because of the line, 'If her daddy's poor'.
'Ruby, don't take your love to town', is another from the 'Delilah' stable. He would kill her if he could!
Clever gender shift in the Mama Mia film, with the song, 'Does your mother know'?

Louella12 Wed 26-Jul-23 15:29:50

Has anytime heard the lyrics to WAP by Cardi B?

Don't Google if easily shocked

Many songs on this thread maybe dated but some songs of today are rather risqué... to say the least!

Louella12 Wed 26-Jul-23 15:31:35

When I Kissed the Teacher by ABBA

They tried to do a gender swap with that in the film but it didn't work .

Under my thumb it was played just this morning on Boom radio never liked it

singingnutty Wed 26-Jul-23 16:01:05

It's Now or Never - Elvis. Great tune and great singing, but slightly dodgy words!
I was amazed recently to find Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' (not sung by him though) on a Christmas album. The tune is amazing and it does mention 'the Lord' in the first verse but after that it's very unsuitable for Christmas.

Paperbackwriter Wed 26-Jul-23 16:05:11

Under my Thumb by the Rolling Stones is horrific misogyny and bullying.

Kate1949 Wed 26-Jul-23 16:05:40

I don't see anything wrong with Little Sister. He's saying she's grown up and he USED to pull her pigtails. She could be 30!
