Dated song lyrics

I've just been listening to Young Girl (Gary Puckett) in the radio and the lyrics now sound decidedly dodgy? Apparently Tom Jones is no longer allowed to sing Delilah as it glorifies domestic violence. And Wives And Lovers (Jack Jones) makes me very cross.
Any more you can think of? I'm not seriously bothered - they're all cracking good tunes!

Wow! I didn’t know about Ticket to Ride either!
That’s funny!

I lived on the Isle of Wight at the time and never believed for one moment it was about Ryde which was a popular explanation at the time.

Years later I remember reading that it was a play on words to make the song more family friendly. Ticket to Ride was slang for getting the all clear after treatment for an STD. In the song the girl is leaving her boyfriend with her ‘Ticket to Ride’.

I wouldn’t mind betting he gave it to her in the first place. 🤣🤔

Lou Reed’s A Perfect Day was thought to be about Heroin. Danny Boyle included it in the film Trainspotting.

It’s about a day spent in Central Park with his wife to be.

Lots of Lou Reed / Velvet Underground songs are about drugs - but Perfect Day isn’t one of them

Like "I'm Waiting for the Man"- Velvet Underground. I didn't realise at the time 'the man' was his dealer!

As I said, upthread - these are pop songs for goodness sake.

Everyone thought Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was about LSD but John Lennon insisted the title came from his son Julian who had a friend called Lucy. Julian came home from school one day with a painting he'd done, when John asked him what it was he replied " Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." People can decide for themselves which version they believe.

I prefer to believe the truth DolphinDaisy!

brown girl in the ring by boney m

But isn’t that just nonsense?

Lathyrus Thu 27-Jul-23 16:33:29

It’s a traditional song from the Caribbean.

Lathyrus Thu 27-Jul-23 16:34:10

Nursery rhyme type song like The farmers in his den.

Lathyrus Thu 27-Jul-23 16:38:12

You all circle the girl in the ring. The when you ding “Show me your motion “ She does a dance with a motion she’s made up and then you all circle singing and copying the dance.

It’s fun!

Lathyrus Thu 27-Jul-23 16:38:50

Then when you sing - not ding😬

FannyCornforth Thu 27-Jul-23 16:40:13

Thanks Lathyrus!
I had an inkling that it was totally innocent.
There is quite a bit of misunderstanding on this thread

Every breath you take was written by Sting about his marriage breakup. He admits that the lyrics are a bit stalkerish.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Jul-23 18:55:08

I've seen an interview in which Sting himself called it "The Stalker Song"

Thanks for that FannyCornforth, I first heard the story years ago so pleased to know it's true. Also hope Lucy enjoyed knowing she was imortilised in song.

I suppose that was why" Je''taime "was banned by all the radio stations. They interpreted it even in the late 60s as a step too far. But most of us can remember it and sing along and the tune was lovely, it can still make me swallow when Jane Birkin died lat weak.
My mother pointed out the inappropriateness of "I'll be watching you", it had been played at a funeral she had attended and she said it was about haunting not Christian values.

Bella23, You mention 'I'll be watching you'.

Do you mean 'Every breath you take' by The Police? If so it is even worse than about haunting, and even more inappropriate for a funeral as its about stalking ...........

‘My ding-a-ling’ by Chuck Berry.

Krispii Fri 28-Jul-23 16:48:57

It was would be a lot more romantic if he drove all night, made her a cup of tea in the morning 😁
I'd be far more likely to be amenable, than being woken up in the middle of the night by someone creeping into my room!

Sparklefizz Fri 28-Jul-23 17:16:13

My ex boyfriend suggested doing that, thinking it would be sexy, whereas I thought it would be terrifying to hear someone creeping up the stairs. I would have locked the bedroom door and dialled 999.

I don't think my mother had ever heard about stalking when she attended the funeral, but at least she listened to the words.
She came away from another after hearing Frank Sinatra singing "My Way", her comment was that the diseased always was a dominant old b....they chose well.

‘My ding-a-ling’ by Chuck Berry.

We watched him in concert the other month on an old recording the song was even more suggestive when he sang it and got audience participation with them singing "My Ding a Ling."I believe he eventually got into trouble for being too near the knuckle.

I wanna be Bobby's girl
That's the most important thing to me

No, love, it's not the most important thing
Use your noddle, be more ambitious!!

I had to listen to my cousin sing this at her wedding as her husband was called Robert[Bobby]. She was 17 and pregnant their parents made them marry. I was a bridesmaid and somehow knew it would never last. They divorced about 2 years later. Both remarried but she never had any more children. He went on to have more.
She definitely had not used her noddle.hmm
