Our closest friends for over 40 years have dropped off our radar in many aspects of our lives. They both have had health issues but all pretty good at the moment. They have a holiday home which we were always invited to and always had fabulous fun. Holidays and weekends away - amazing craic. They have their grandkids nearby, ours are a flight away. Excuse is ‘babysitting’ . Very little reciprocation in recent times which was never the case before covid. No initiative re having a coffee, drink, walk …anything. Limited exchange on What’s App, etc. originally it was just the wife but now husband is likewise. When we do get together it’s all very normal, few drinks & lots of chat. Others on the periphery are beginning to notice the same so we feel it’s not just us.
Because of their previous health issues and a few family difficulties we feel they are depressed and hiding away. We have given them space as we feel maybe that is what they need. The four of us have supported each other through thick and thin all these years but I just wonder as you get older do you do or want to do less socialising? Your experiences and advice would be very welcome.
