We make a point of not using Weatherspoons, for a number of reasons. One being how its workers were treated during the pandemic.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Sep-23 08:23:33

When I was working years ago, I had reason to go into a couple of Weatherspoons.

The carpet was sticky, the tables were filthy and it smelt😮😮😮

Grandmabatty Wed 13-Sep-23 08:36:09

Marydoll 100% agree. The owner is an odious man.

Redhead56 Wed 13-Sep-23 08:43:02

I have been to a few for drinks in various locations. What is represented front of house speaks volumes of what the kitchen is like. No amount of discount will encourage me to actually eat in any of them.

Here are the reasons and facts why :
Thursday 14 September is Tax Equality Day. All prices are reduced by 7.5%, promoting the benefit of a permanent VAT reduction in the hospitality industry. One day only.
I being a CAMRA member get 50p off a pint as part of my CAMRA membership many members do not like this deal Spoons are doing .

Stop bandying your lies about

www.jdwetherspoon.com/food/food-hygiene-rating

They get the highest rating of 5 at most of their pubs. I just googled Essex branches and they are all 5’s and a couple of 4s.

You remind me of saddos over here who spread lies about a brand new Marston’s pub/restaurant that had only been open a week. It had a closed sign up and these rumourmongers said “the kitchens were filthy, it was disgusting, they’ve been closed down for dirty premises.” They didn’t stop to think how it could get so dirty in just a week!!

They had apparently not got the appropriate planning permission for an extractor fan so it was closed until they obtained it.

You still so sore about Brexit? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You are entitled to your opinion and I mine. However, there are more pleasant ways of making your point.

If you read my post carefully, you will see that I said, we don't use it for a number of reasons.

Blimey. We love Wetherspoons. They do this discount once a year. As Primrose says, they are always top, or at least in the top five, of the food hygiene ratings of all major pub chains/eating establishments.

MrsThatcher Wed 13-Sep-23 09:38:50

We have a WS near us and it’s always spotless and nice food. Nice staff too.

The myth that staff were badly treated during the pandemic was debunked ages ago.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Sep-23 09:41:21

Not only were the tables filthy, but they were all over the place. The whole establishment was dreadful.

Michael12 Wed 13-Sep-23 09:42:13

Wetherspoons have a reputation of being home to local alcoholics who just sit in there most of the day mainly the unemployed .

Been in quite a few Weatherspoons and they do vary. Some of them are in lovely buildings which they have preserved. The ones in old cinemas are especially impressive.

We have breakfast there about once a month. Never had reason to complain. You can see into the kitchen through a serving hatch, all the staff look clean and wear hair and beard covers.

The food is always great, the plates always hot and the tables cleaned before we settle down to eat.

We pay about £5 for a traditional breakfast. Excellent value.

I have never been into a Spoons that is not really busy. If they were dirty or poor value, people would go elsewhere.

Kate1949 Wed 13-Sep-23 09:47:22

The 'alcoholics using Wetherspoons' is an old fashioned view. The ones we visit for lunch are mainly full of pensioners taking advantage of the cheap food and free refills of tea and coffee.

paddyann54 Wed 13-Sep-23 09:51:21

marydoll we dont use this vile mans pubs either and never will ,the one local to us has an awful reputation for disgusting ping food and bad treatment of staff .

JenniferEccles Wed 13-Sep-23 09:59:42

The only time I have ever set food in one of those pubs was when we were in an unfamiliar town and I desperately needed the loo ! I just nipped in and out.

I must admit Weatherspoons as a pub chain has never appealed to me. Having said that I do definitely approve of the owner’s ban on both music and dogs in his premises and I wish more establishments would follow suit.

I don’t know what on earth the owner has done to deserve being called ‘odious’.
Of course he was a staunch Brexit supporter so that would be enough in some quarters!

Wheniwasyourage Wed 13-Sep-23 10:02:38

We avoid Wetherspoons because of the owner's views on Brexit. He may be entitled to his opinion, but then we are equally entitled to ours.

Am great fan of Wetherspoons.
Ours forms a great community hub.
Very reasonable price, no background music, relaxed atmosphere.
I understand the carpets are specially woven Axminsters.

And there we have the brunt of it wheniwasyourage Thank you for your honesty.👍 Much better than making up rubbish and lies about Spoons. 👏👏

I think some of you have just been unlucky. I go to Wetherspoons quite a lot, -although not quite so much these days owing to being old and creaky, - and think they are great.
I haven't noticed anything filthy or sticky etc. The food is good, the drinks are cheaper than elsewhere , and it's one of the very few pubs that I can go in alone and not feel uncomfortable, due to the friendly family atmosphere.
Also, one of my grandchildren works in one and I know from them just how strict the standards are of cleanliness etc.
So, you have just been unlucky. It must depend on the efficiency of the branch manager.

Michael12 Wed 13-Sep-23 10:12:57

The ones I go in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide , and drinking wise will go on taste as to the beer brands they offer , taste , flavour and if its kept well good beer quality .
As to some of the locations former cinemas , night clubs , supermarkets and former post offices , they try to retain the character of the buildings former use.
Its a pity they scrapped Sunday roasts .
