No snobbery on my part, I can assure you!
I have eaten in them in the past and won't be doing so again! Our last two meals were awful.

No snobbery here either. On the few occasions that I've been into a Wetherspoons I have found them grubby, depressingly gloomy, stick tables, dirty cutlery, lipstick marks on glasses, and the food was nothing to write home about!

I would far sooner pay a bit more at an independent establishment for quality food thanks very much.

You can’t guarantee an independent is better. A couple of years ago a posh friend suggested 4 of us went for breakfast at a “fine dining” restaurant/B and B. I had Eggs Benedict, it was barely warm and we waited a long time. the coffee was not to my liking, far too strong and I specifically asked for just one shot. The EB was about £13 and the coffee over £3. I complained about the coffee and they knocked that off.

EB at Spoons was then about £4 and coffee is perfect and you can have as many refills free as you like.

That’s fine. We are all entitled to our opinion and myself and many on here disagree with you. What is very unfair though is to tell lies about treatment of staff etc.

Look at this link and see just how many newspapers have issued apologies to Wetherspoons for spreading lies about them. You know as well as I do that if they thought for a minute there was any truth in what they printed, they would never in a million years, apologise.

Primrose, many on here also agree with me.
The last time I checked, there wasn't a law decreeing that we must all like Weatherspoons. We should be able to respect different points of view on GN, without being unpleasant. At no point have I urged anyone to avoid Weatherspoons. If you have had positive experiences, that's great to hear.I can only speak from my own perspective.
Please clarify why you are singling me out, or is it just my persecution complex going into overdrive again.?

I have only ever been into a Wetherspoons once, the one in Llandudno.

It was in what was previously a cinema/theatre inside a lot of the original balconies, boxes and architecture had been kept.

Food was average, wine was drinkable.

I've been in lots of different Wetherpoons all over the country it all depends on the area some are nice some not so good. There is a nice one in Keswick it's the old court house and also a nice one in Henley on Thames (hotel) and one in Whitby on the seafront absolutely packed out. Also they sell local beers helping local breweries and provide lots of job opportunities. I think there is an element of snobbiness on here re Wetherpoons.

The only Wetherspoons I have ever been in is The Catherine Wheel in Henley. I stayed there on a business trip and it was fine.

I think I have been particularly unlucky. The dirty messy one was on the Somerset coast, and one we went into on the south coast smelt of old oil🤢 which makes me feel queezy.

I don’t understand why, given that the owner, with his great political knowledge, was on tv almost daily telling us why we’d be better off out of the EU, isn’t interviewed these days to tell us how to deal with the energy crisis, the cost of living crisis, the sewage crisis etc etc …(or to tell us how well Brexit is going..)

Hasn’t he come over to remain - saying Brexit was mis-sold?

We avoid Wetherspoons because of the owner's views on Brexit. He may be entitled to his opinion, but then we are equally entitled to ours.

Thank you for your comment, Primrose53, although It seems that I am not the only one who deplores the political views of the owner of Wetherspoons. You and I are, I think, unlikely ever to agree on anything related to politics, so I do appreciate your post.

I regularly go to a city centre WS with a group of friends. The coffee is excellent and we can stay there as long as we like with free top ups. The toilets are always spotless.

Use Wetherspoons from time to time as cheap and convenient,and food generally good. Find they vary from pub to pub. Went to one in London and carpet was disgusting, also went to one in Eastbourne which was immaculate.

We often go to Wetherspoons for breakfast - fantastic value and really good quality. Yes, there are some people (well, nearly always men, I've observed) who are sitting there nursing pints at 9 in the morning but, hey ho, they are not harming anyone and it's their choice. Also I sometimes meet friends there for lunch - always had good meals at very reasonable prices. I particularly like the fact that they do small versions of things like fish and chips as I have a small appetite and can't often manage large meals. We also seek their branches out when we are on holiday as they are often in beautiful old buildings and are generally clean and well maintained (obviously there are exceptions as there are in every chain). I am interested in what political views poor old Tim has that makes him 'odious'. There was a case of dreadful misreporting during lockdown, which resulted in apologies from many newspapers. Unfortunately, mud sticks and many people still believe it. Or it it just that he supported Brexit? Many people voted for it (well, actually the majority of people who voted) - are we all 'odious'?

Had Wetherspoons eggs Benedict with black pudding recently at the Oban branch. It was excellent.

I must have looked befuddled while reading the coffee machine. A friendly bloke helped by doing it for me. Some people would take offence at this but I like friendly people and next time I want a W coffee I'll be quick.

Another thing I like about W is that there's no damn muzack!!!! This is sadly very rare. Worth a lot in my view.

We went to our local Spoons for lunch yesterday. DH had an all day brunch - two sausages, two rashers of bacon, fried egg, beans and chips. I had small fish, chips and peas. We had one pint of beer, one large glass of wine. It was delicious and £16.

Never been in one and this offer wouldn't change that. Have been told they do a great breakfast.

The owner's an arch-Brexiter. But the pubs are actually as clean as any other (i.e. have occasional bad days) and he actually treated his staff OK during Covid, after shooting his mouth off with a ridiculous initial statement,

Not been in many of them or often, but why are the toilets so far away?! Usually up multiple flights of stairs in a part of the building in a galaxy far, far away.....

I live opposite our Wetherspoons and use it very frequently. It isn't full of unemployed alcoholics and I believe that the few 'regulars' - older men who sit musing over a pint - are better off being among people than drinking on their own at home. The staff are lovely; most of them returned after the Covid lockdown, were happy with how they were treated and are happy in their jobs.

I love that no dogs are allowed and that there is no piped music. Since my divorce years ago I've sought out Wetherspoons wherever I go because I can unselfconsciously sit in there as a single woman and always feel comfortable, even in the inner city ones I've been to. In the winter in my local Wetherspoons there is a log fire burning and it has a homely feel. My friends and family all love it. In the evenings it's buzzing with students and the atmosphere is great. Once a week my church group meet there for a Bible study. That's how diverse the place is and in our town it is a real social hub.
