Ahh love her / disgusted by her - is she your Marmite? Saw the interview on ThisMorning...she's made the front cover on Vogue...at 82
She can be very hilarious but loves her fart talk -was most interested in her mint front botty therapy....what do other GNs think?

Dr Watson
“Oh, and I also wasn't aware she'd posed nude for Augustus John -- was he at one time employed painting a circus marquee?”

I am the mother of a lesbian daughter and I feel that M M is a terrible role model for people like her.

Why does she need to be such a show off

Gay people are just trying to live their lives. That's something I learned from FFLAG Friends and family of lesbian and gay people. Some are outlandish but most want to just live their lives like anyone else.

Well yes, of course, but MM being extrovert is not stopping them from living as they please. Nobody sees her as representative of all lesbians. Do lesbians need a role model? Surely they can just be themselves.

Callistemon21 Thu 14-Sept-23 18:24:16

She is not representative of any group, anyone except herself 😁

Doodledog Thu 14-Sept-23 18:32:53

Absolutely!

Gosh! What a judgemental lot you are 😮

Camille333 Thu 14-Sept-23 19:41:46

Disgustingly she thinks her backside has entertainment value, poor deluded twit

Vintagenonna Thu 14-Sept-23 19:57:09

I loved her description of providing a sexual service to a gentleman who rowed her across to catch a ferry in (I think) one of the Greek Islands and her friend misunderstanding the meaning of what she'd said.

She is a crashing snob but at least she is a funny crashing snob. But I take her comments about HRH's comedic talents with a small siberian salt mine.

I met her a few years ago and found her very nice. She was doing some readings in our library, which she did very well. She has a beautiful speaking voice.

Excellent review, Luckygirl

Mokeswife Thu 14-Sept-23 21:05:15

Lucky girl has made a good resume on MM's autobiography but my lasting feeling about this attention-seeker is that she has no sense of loyalty or respect. This view was as a result of the shock I had when reading in the book about her therapist's enablement of Jacqueline du Pre's suicide; what gave her the right to betray her trust? Just because she had died did she not understand how much that news might distress friends and family of both women as well as Jacqueline's many fans. And why retell it? She wasn't involved, so was she just living through someone else's experience to make her seem more important or notorious? Her language and crudity are all about attention and notoriety not about genuine expression of emotion. Not a nice woman at all.

I think Miriam Margoyles comes across as quite unpleasant. I did not like her behaviour in the Real Marigold Hotel. I like Call the Midwife and she is the only character I do not take to.

She may well be very nice if you meet her in person but her public persona is not nice.

I’ve never liked Miriam Margoyles but having read the free sample on my kindle I’ve just ordered the book.

The reason? I may still dislike her by the end but I really wanted to carry on reading.

I only use my kindle for free samples these days because I reduced my book collection too drastically when I moved so I’m gradually building it back up again.

This one might raise a few eyebrows! 😂

Attlee Thu 14-Sept-23 22:21:45

Elusivebutterfly, those were characters she played though.
She is an actor.
She certainly has a larger than life personality, but that will be her public persona, which will apply to a lot of celebrities.
However, I do agree that she can be quite course, doesn't bother me, but I understand why some may be offended.

Thank you for the kind words about the book review. I have been writing one for the parish mag every month for a very long time and have a few hundred saved on my laptop. I enjoy doing them as it makes me really think about the book I have read and research around it - so I get more out of it.I like to read back over them now and again ... it is like rereading the book itself.

More than anything else though, isn’t she just a huge bore?

Does she honestly think that people are interested in her vulgar, crude utterances?

She is allegedly intelligent, which to me makes her behaviour and language all the more shocking.

Amalegra Fri 15-Sept-23 02:00:06

I find her entertaining in small doses. Obviously born into privilege, she attempts to counter this by foul mouthed rants and shock tactics which to me often lack any true wit and seem rather immature and silly. She’s a good actress but that appears to be secondary to the persona she likes to push!. I much prefer Jo Brand who seems more ‘real’ to me.

I used to like her, and still occasionally find her funny, but I feel she's becoming more vulgar with age, and is just out to shock these days. My partner, who also used to like her, bought her book on Audible, but was totally bored by it within minutes. She ended up returning it!

Missiseff Fri 15-Sept-23 10:18:06

Can't stand her. Don't find her funny in the slightest.

Louella12 Fri 15-Sept-23 10:30:23

I think she can be quite hilarious.

Fabulous voice

But I could do without fart chat etc etc

I love her. I think it's about time we had an outspoken female! We've had so many Men being rude & smutty that people havnt batted an eyelid at or accepted it. Men have got away with it for 100s of years. Well done to her I say. Are we having this conversation because she's a woman I wonder? And a lesbian woman to boot. She's Brilliant we need more Miriam's!

Your review was an absolute pleasure to read Luckygirl!
I think you ought to consider a weekly thread - one book a week from your collection perhaps?

Please have a think about it? You write really well and your reviews will have some depth to them.

I’m sure I’m not to only book lover on here who would very much look forward to ‘Lucky’s Dips’.
😊

I don't like her crudeness but I like her voice and the way she talks to all sorts of people - and listens to them. I especially enjoyed her Australia journey - except for her unnecessary language!
