Just heard it’s grandparents day on 1 st October. Who would have known ?

Grandma70s Sat 23-Sept-23 13:10:42

When my sons were younger they used to query why there wasn’t a Children’s Day.

Our grandchildren’s primary school always celebrated it on the Friday before. There was a short assembly and then the grandparents spent the rest of the afternoon looking at the children’s work. If grandparents were unavailable a parent or other relative or friend went and the adults present always looked out for and included the children who had no visitors. It was a lovely occasion and didn’t involve cards or presents either home made or otherwise.

Sees daft to me. Just another money making day. But, if it makes someone happy then that's nice I suppose.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 23-Sept-23 13:32:42

Why can't we just be kind to each other , and to animals and to the environment, all the timem instead of having all these stupid "days" that nobody bothers about in the least?

They are nothing but a con - to get us to spend money on things the recipients don't need or want.

If anyone wants to be kind to any grandparent, their own or anyone else's what about offering to cut the hedge, or tidy the attic?

And if grandparents want to treat their children or grandchildren then looking after the grandchildren for a whole weekend so the parents can do whatever they like would probably fit the bill!

I hope my Grandchildren don`t hear this,i don`t want them wasting their money.

Smileless2012 Sat 23-Sept-23 13:43:48

Ours did too Grandma70s so I told them every day was children's daygrin.

annodomini Sat 23-Sept-23 14:04:26

OK! How about greatgrandparents' day? Will it never end? My sons and their wives/partners are more than generous and it doesn't need a 'special day' to remind them of my existence.

Hallmark also do christmas movies!lol

Seluj Sat 23-Sept-23 14:18:56

Sure is just like lots of other things we’ve picked up, like school Prom and Baby Shower, never had them in my days.

I used to work a lot in the USA, the greeting card shops were eye openers, orthodontist day; PA day, it went on and on.

AreWeThereYet Sat 23-Sept-23 14:45:15

We don't do Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day, or any other day, although my parents did and DM would get very upset if anyone forgot. We only just manage Christmas and birthdays. I think my GCs did Mothers Day and Fathers Day when they were very young, mainly because their friends and schools made a fuss about it. I think it's gone from their calendars now, too. It's nice I suppose for people who don't often see their children/GCs, especially those who don't have much family.

I kind of like the idea BUT as grandparents are also parents and we have Mothering Sunday and Fathers Day it does seem a little overkill !

I agree with this. And assuming they are still alive, there are possibly four grandparents to buy cards and presents for, which could be costly for some people. Some of them may have 10 grandchildren, again it's all too much, for grandparents, children and grandchildren. For everyone!

Initiatives of Hallmark Cards 😁

Goldieoldie15 Sat 23-Sept-23 15:10:20

In Australia there are regular grandparents days organised by schools. The children prepare a special performance and it’s a great day of celebrations. Such a good idea. And it’s not about cards from Hallmark!

Romola Sat 23-Sept-23 15:39:54

Well, I had never heard of it either. If I had, and didn't receive a telephone call, I might feel a bit miffed So I shall go on not having heard of it.

Never heard if it! Must be US defo not UK

A card or a small gift on Mothers day or Refreshment Sunday is quite nice particularly for children , but the others are just silly and a way to get people to part with their money. I certainly don't wish my much loved grandchildren to give me more than a passing thought in their very busy lives on a designated day or any other day come to that.

Am I the only one who has never heard of Refreshment Sunday?

Mine are staying that weekend - I wonder if they know about it?

A hug will be sufficient 🙂

I haven't either.

What on earth does it mean?

Callistemon21 Sat 23-Sept-23 17:02:57

It's Mothering Sunday, not Mother's Day, just saying ........

Just another money spinner by greedy corporations wanting to relive you of your hard earned cash!

knspol Sat 23-Sept-23 20:27:20

Another nonsense day imo.

annodomini Sat 23-Sept-23 21:28:53

What on earth is 'Refreshment Sunday'? I could do with some refreshment every day - not just Sunday.

pinkprincess Sat 23-Sept-23 21:42:41

My late DH used to laugh about all these special days suddenly appearing.
He would always say,''There will be a third cousin four times removed day next''

What on earth is 'Refreshment Sunday'? I could do with some refreshment every day - not just Sunday.

Wiki says:
"The Refreshment Sundays or Rose Sundays are Sundays within the two major fasts observed in Western Christianity, Lent and Advent. On these days, the fast was allowed to be relaxed, hence the name "Refreshment Sunday""

So nothing to do with Hallmark cards 🙂

It sounds like a good idea - if you give up eg chocolate or wine for Lent you can eat chocolate and drink wine on Refreshment Sundays.
Brilliant!
