Annoying noises

On the radio here just now they have a phone in about what everyday noises really irritate people. Apparently there is a link between OCD and the extent to which noises get on your nerves. Things that were mentioned was the crunch of someone eating an apple, noisy eaters and slurpers and sneezing. All of these irritate me ( I don’t have OCD ), especially sneezing and another one is a chesty cough, probably a Covid thing, because if I hear someone coughing in a supermarket I shift aisles quickly and head off in the opposite direction ! I also can’t stand the noise of someone talking on the phone loudly.
What annoys you, if anything?
Oh, and dogs barking at night!

When I first moved here in the 2000s, a visitor asked if I found passing foot-traffic into town irritating. I didn't, it was nice to be reminded there was a world out there. However in the last couple of years, big lorries leaving their engines on for 10/20/30 minutes when delivering to shops during the day, and thoughtless 20-somethings yelling and squealing to each other late into the evening (a local restaurant became an attractive place to drink and dance) have each become a real nuisance.
Environmental Health givers noise, but not these noises apparently.

Motorbikes and mopeds. The horrendous noise they emit unsettles me to the point of fear and anxiety whenever I hear them approach.

The normal chalk on a blackboard.
And definitely snoring.

The TV being g too loud (Dh denies his deafness).
People who speak /laugh too loudly.
Anything too loud really.

How about noises we love….

Sound of the sea
Birds singing
The wind in the forest trees
Little children giggling
Favourite music (not too loud)
My little dog snuffling as she sleeps beside me

Anything pedantic, I switch off at the plug

The sound of a football being kicked against a wall for hours on end. Doors banging....it's amazing that many people don't seem to notice!

Noisy eaters
Dogs barking at night
Loud bangs from fireworks in the weeks leading up to and after 5th November

Barking dogs, there is one near me that barks the entire time their owner is out, the owner refuses to believe her dog does this and when someone let her listen to a recording said it wasn’t her dog.

Strimmers.
Noisy eaters, when I go for my breaks at work if there is a certain person in having their break I have to go out to sit in my car as I know I won't be able to eat my sandwich.

Also yes the bane of a lot of our lives, is dogs constantly yap yap yap yap yap yap, yet the owners are oblivious.

Anything too loud, tv, cinema, shouting voices.
Kids who run around screaming, usually girls.
Car doors continually slamming.

Very high pitched sounds make my head hurt. Like many people with a brain injury I can’t deal with a lot of noise. Crowded places, lots of people talking at once, complete overload!

Chainsaws. Once they start, they seem to go on and on...

DanniRae Mon 23-Oct-23 12:22:13

I can't sleep with a ticking clock near me.
Next doors dog used to bark and bark most of the day and it nearly drove me crazy. To make matters worse it didn't bother Mr R at all!

Noisy eaters
Constant football thudding
Screaming kids

Whispering in the row behind at the cinema.
People singing along at a musical in the theatre.
Chain saws.

Gingster, I agree with all your dislikes and likes here .......children giggling, bird song, etc. Bliss.

The child who lives above me running backwards and forwards and jumping off the furniture. We've asked his parents to put soft shoes on him but they take no notice. Sometimes I'm driven to take a tranquiliser as I get really wound up by his antics.

I think in general, inconsiderate “human -generated” noises annoy me most.
I know one neighbour complains about planes overhead (I never hear them) and motor bikes racing up and down the bypass at night a mile or so away from the village , but I can “tune” that out.
Noisy parties which go on into the small hours used to really get me when we lived in London and here, petrol mowers or strimming if I have guests and we’re having lunch in the garden.
I also recognise that who is generating the noise can affect how I feel. Neighbours who are friends? No problem. My grumpy and aggressive neighbour round the corner? Another matter!
In fact living in a quiet village I realise have nothing to complain about anyway.

My ASD son hates blowing his nose and has allergic rhinitis so starts to sniff REALLY loudly. It’s the only thing he does that irritates me but it’s so loud and so bad. He has nose spray and an infrared device but still has a good old sniff before he uses them and —I want to murder him— 😂

Dee1012 Tue 24-Oct-23 11:48:39

Screaming children...
People who hold loud conversations especially on a mobile phone.
Loud music blasting out of cars.

JdotJ Tue 24-Oct-23 11:53:26

1. Whistling
2. Tapping of fingers

I get so annoyed it's best I'm not near to any knives whenever I hear these noises.

Typing on phone with the Key pad sound still on.
