Annoying noises

On the radio here just now they have a phone in about what everyday noises really irritate people. Apparently there is a link between OCD and the extent to which noises get on your nerves. Things that were mentioned was the crunch of someone eating an apple, noisy eaters and slurpers and sneezing. All of these irritate me ( I don’t have OCD ), especially sneezing and another one is a chesty cough, probably a Covid thing, because if I hear someone coughing in a supermarket I shift aisles quickly and head off in the opposite direction ! I also can’t stand the noise of someone talking on the phone loudly.
What annoys you, if anything?
Oh, and dogs barking at night!

Loud conversations on mobile phones especially at breakfast in hotels. Why can't people make their calls before coming down to b'fast and switch them off while having a meal/

It's misophonia, see en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia and I wish I didn't have it. For me it is repeated coughing and someone eating next to me when I am not. Makes me want to scream!

Nothing really except when the grandchildren howl. Oh, and sniffing.

Screaming/whiney kids.

Nail files - the emery board type!!!!! I had to buy an electric one to do my nails. And I couldn’t bear it when Bet Lynch on Coronation Street would file her nails in the Rovers!!!!
It just sets my teeth on edge.

The older I get the more noise bothers me.
Love the sounds of nature and small children laughing.
There seems to be so much unnecessary ‘noise’. The worst for me is when the is continual background music or television. Why ?

It’s whistling for me.
Only another sufferer can understand the pain whistling causes me. Although elderly I still have excellent hearing ( so far ) and a good whistler just hits notes which give me the shivers. And boy does it hurt. My jaw widens, my ears ache and the pain goes on for nearly an hour after whistlers long gone.
About time I found out why I have this reaction. Anyone know?

Misophonia is the name given to people getting upset and angry by the sound of people eating noisily. It's a known thing!
It's my only real issue around noise. I'm not keen on dogs barking but they don't get me upset but someone eating with their mouth open is not just about bad manners for me but something that really disturbs.
Not keen on kids running around above me or football on the TV... I rush to change the channel!

I used to find my ex 's chewing irritating but not other people's. Then DS got really angry about DD's chewing and threw his plate of dinner at the wall! It seems there is an actual condition that some people suffer from that makes this a major problem. Thankfully the outburst was a one off. I assume he was having a bad day! I did then read up about it and also found out that one of my friends suffers from it and can't eat at work with a particular colleague.
Clearly my son and I have the condition but don't suffer it as badly as some. Since my divorce I've been unaware of it myself.

Misophonia - thanks other posters - I'd forgotten the name. Should have read the whole thread before posting.

Children screaming - seems to be a thing these days. Over-excited football commentators on TV who speak/shout increasingly loudly and increasingly incomprehensibly.

Buttonjugs; what does ASD stand for

Oh yes, eating/swallowing noises make me quite angry and people talking loudly on phones on public transport. Louder than if they were talking to someone sitting next to them. But the eating noises are my worst problem and I wish there was something that could help with that. I can remember far back when as a child sitting at the table, my father's eating noises made me want to scream!

I don't usually comment, but couldn't scroll past , I do agree people coughing is annoying but not everyone with a cough has covid. I have a lung condition called Bronchiectasis and I've had a constant cough for 10 Years, so please don't judge everyone...

Leaf blowers. Strimmers. Our neighbour has them going constantly.
Use a broom and shears.

My left ear has been deaf for years, but I've been coping. However social situations have been getting more difficult so I got a hearing air ten days ago. My goodness!! EVERYTHING is so loud, odd things like filling the kettle even! I am very grateful to have it now, but when it's just me at home, I'm leaving it off.

Bazza Tue 24-Oct-23 14:28:41

High pitched screaming
Dripping taps
Snoring, probably the worst
Over excited football commentators
Most rap music
Gum chewing
Could go on…….

I cannot abide the sounds on computer games, any visiting grandchildren know if they haven't brought their earphones then they don't get to play. I play a couple of games, e.g scrabble on the laptop but all sounds are turned off. I really cannot stand it.

Grandma70s Tue 24-Oct-23 15:03:51

I loathe noise, and am lucky to have always lived in quiet places - quiet, that is, with the exception of noisy garden machinery in summer. Pop music is the worst, but fortunately I mostly manage to avoid it.

polly123 Tue 24-Oct-23 15:14:01

Loud people, football commentators when something happens (doesn't take much), James Blunt and others, plinky plonky piano music accompanying images on screen, dripping taps, motor bikes and noisy cars, barking dogs etc. etc.

TwiceAsNice Tue 24-Oct-23 15:15:29

People having a loud conversation near me wherever that is.

Happy dogs

Rap music ( how can they call it music!)

Someone parked up with their engine still running ( this annoys me on all kinds of levels)

Ice cream vans

TwiceAsNice Tue 24-Oct-23 15:15:52

Sorry yappy dogs not happy

Musicgirl Tue 24-Oct-23 15:18:36

I have some deafness so the sounds that annoy some of you probably won’t be heard by me. However, there are two sounds that really irritate me. The first is sniffing and the second is small children shrieking and not being corrected for it. I have often had perforated ear drums and the latter sound makes my ears ache.

Musicgirl Tue 24-Oct-23 15:19:59

ASD is Autism Spectrum Disorder.
