Annoying noises

On the radio here just now they have a phone in about what everyday noises really irritate people. Apparently there is a link between OCD and the extent to which noises get on your nerves. Things that were mentioned was the crunch of someone eating an apple, noisy eaters and slurpers and sneezing. All of these irritate me ( I don’t have OCD ), especially sneezing and another one is a chesty cough, probably a Covid thing, because if I hear someone coughing in a supermarket I shift aisles quickly and head off in the opposite direction ! I also can’t stand the noise of someone talking on the phone loudly.
What annoys you, if anything?
Oh, and dogs barking at night!

I agree that screaming is annoying - young children can be taught not to do it, and there is no excuse for teenagers or young adults.

Sniffing, coughing and throat clearing dried me insane. I know not everyone can help it and I sympathise, but it makes me feel ill.

Snoring is the worst though. Trying to sleep when my husband is loudly advertising the fact that he is in dreamland makes me want to kill him to death, then wake him up and kill him again.

I'm afraid I have to put up with annoying noise wherever I go.
Tinnitus, a constant hissing sound.
External noise, the donkey braying in the field behind our house.

The repeated monotonous single note as background on TV programmes. Do non of the musical directors have any musical training It is distracting . At least I can turn the sound off and read the sub titles.

We live quite near the sea and have the constant noise of waves crashing on the shore. A constant dull rumble. But I find it quite comforting and I’m sure would miss it if we moved

Careful what you wish for comes to mind. Here we heard of people who bought new houses behind a large supermarket. They collectively complained about large lorries delivering at night so nighttime deliveries were stopped. But then there was no papers milk bread or most of the other fresh foods until the afternoon. So the lorries returned at night lol.
Also another family bought a house next to a church and complained to the council about the bells being rung. So the bells stopped but nobody in the village would speak or interact with the family and they had many nasty interactions with the locals. It was so bad that they sold up and moved away. Then the bells were reinstated.
Also a lady bought a house with a private lane that was a right of way. She tried to get dogwalkers in trouble by photographing them and reporting them to the council for dogs not on a lead. A local person told her that everyone in the village hated her because of it, and nobody would speak to her.
Doesn't pay to upset the locals imo

Ticking clocks and my husbands snoring!

Diplomat Tue 24-Oct-23 17:31:36

Oops husband's

Another vote for sniffing and people who gasp at the end of sentences - like the character Phil in Eastenders!

Very interesting. Someone scrunching on an apple is excruciating for me. Happily it usually only last for 10 minutes at the most. Also, I observe these scrunchers are really enjoying themselves and it would be churlish to comment. I sometimes find it necessary to remove myself from the room though. I really like and appreciate 'that guy' on BBC1 Saturday Kitchen. Isn't it a good thing that we're all different?!

karmalady

Anything pedantic, I switch off at the plug

What do you mean please?

JaneJudge Tue 24-Oct-23 18:22:47

people who like the sound of their own voice

NotSpaghetti Tue 24-Oct-23 18:26:37

I live about a mile from a busy road.
I find it distracting if I'm up late or awake at night.

I also sometimes find the ticking of my gas meter (outside) rather irritating. I don't notice

NotSpaghetti Tue 24-Oct-23 18:27:52

... I don't notice it unless I'm at home alone or we are both home but busy reading or other quiet activity.

Having just moved out of a flat with a neighbor from hell I’d have to say rap music slamming doors 24/7 and loud sex with whoever he picked up, try watching corrie 😂 I now live in a bungalow with none of the above lol but screaming excited kids as started to bother me didn’t used to I blame lockdown

My annoying noises are people related rather than dogs and machines . Top of the list is noisy eaters , both my df and fil were noisy eaters and drove me nuts.
Noisy slurpers, I couldn’t be in the same room as an old boss when he was drinking his tea 😬.
Perpetual snifflers , just get a hanky,
Exaggerated noisy drawn out yawns, my dh does this and I want to stab him
People clicking their knuckles.
Slamming doors in hotels and scraping furniture on a tiled floor . That’s why I always request a top floor room or apartment.
My only annoying machine noise is the reverse sensors on my neighbours car. He’s a rubbish driver and takes numerous attempts to reverse into his drive.

A dripping tap drives me up the wall.
Otherwise I'm pretty tolerant of unavoidable noises but really have to work hard to tolerate over-loud talking on the train.

OH has a habit of jollying himself along with train noises - chuff, chuff going from one for to another and jiggly-puff, jiggly puff going up the stairs. Mostly I can block it out but just sometimes......!!

My DH eating! It's not actually the sound of him eating per se, it's the fact that he bangs and scrapes his cutlery on the plate/bowl very loudly and as he eats so quickly it's a constant cacophany and drives me mad!! I can feel myself tensing up and have to leave the room. Luckily, apart from dinner in the evening we don't tend to eat at the same time...

CanadianGran Tue 24-Oct-23 19:15:05

Doodledog, you made me giggle!

My DH watches a lot of sports, or rather, keeps the TV on the sports channel while he does other things. There is one baseball announcer that has a very nasally voice; he drives me mad.

Also women's curling. Oh Lordy, don't get me started!

Snowbell Tue 24-Oct-23 19:15:47

Pressure washers, rattly busses when I'm on board , fans

Treebee Tue 24-Oct-23 19:49:57

Chewing, eating, gum chewing, loud burping are repulsive to me.

Worse though, is whispering. Some adverts like Secret Escapes use whispering, which I have to mute.

Someone drumming their fingers is intolerable too.

Arghhhh!

singingnutty Tue 24-Oct-23 20:35:14

Radio 4 on all the time at high volume. DH turns the radio on as soon as he walks into a room - we have several in the house. He has to have them on at maximum volume because he is rather deaf. Then he leaves them on although obviously not listening. However, doesn't particularly like listening to music. (I do like Radio 4 but would prefer to be selective.) Another big annoyance when in the garden is the sound of vehicles moving around on a nearby building site - continuous beeping for hours on end. Luckily we are not right next to it but I can't imagine how residents who are close can possibly cope. It's been going on for months.

Whistling and sniffing have my ears up round my shoulders. The third is an odd one, anyone jingling change in their pockets, Happens less now more folk use a card to pay for everything.

People talking loudly on their mobile on transport, in the street, in fact, anywhere.
Children yelling at one another when they can walk a couple of steps and just talk.
The mindess activity of just hitting a football back and forth or banging on a fence or wall.
Dogs left inside or out to bark for hours
Noisy oversized exhausts on cars; when are they going to be banned.
The drip from a bit of the guttering on my conservatory.

Curling Wed 25-Oct-23 00:06:06

People who scuff their shoes along the floor without picking their feet up.

Quichette Wed 25-Oct-23 02:34:24

I remember when I accompanied my dear husband to the sleep clinic to see about his loud snoring. The Doctor turned to me and asked if I had noticed him stop breathing whilst he was snoring. I replied that he only did that when I pressed my pillow over his face for too long. wink
