Trivial, I know! My DH talks to himself ALL the time. Is this normal? He is 68 but has always done it!

I even have a name for myself. It's Mrs. Worthington!
I can be heard saying 'such things as, Well, that wasn't very clever Mrs. Worthington' I can only thing that the name is a throw back to my school days as there was a teacher by this name. Anyone else who has a name for themselves? grin

Ive always talked to myself or i speak aloud whilst addressing the dogs. I tell them im going to the loo, change into outside shoes and then we will go out. If i go out and not take them i say i wont be long. Normal in my eyes.

My mum used to say that there’s nothing wrong with talking to yourself- it’s when you answer back that you should worry. I’m guilty of both😀

My GD asked a few days ago why I hummed whilst walking down the hall and whistled quietly sometimes.

I didn't know I did but now I do it's irritating.

I always castigate myself for my follies, but I read that it’s very bad for the psyche to call oneself “stupid” for example.

The only time my husband talks to himself is when he vacuums, I can hear him over the noise!

I was an only child and I have talked to myself all my life. When my other half was alive he was always asking who I was talking to. LOL. Now I'm on my own again I do it even more. I talk to myself about what I have gone upstairs for and sometimes I talk to myself about what I'm going to do next or what I'm having for dinner. I hope its not a sign I'm going mad or demented. I don't think so.

Not only do I talk to myself, and always have done, I talk to the cats, to household appliances that are playing up, to my computer when it annoys me, to my sewing machine, which rarely annoys me as we have had a close relationship since I was 25.

I also, without shame or apology, talk to strange cats and dogs that I meet, to the local farmers' milk cows and to any baby who is polite enough to send me a big smile from the safety of his or her pram or parent's arms.

And believe me, parents still go all gooey when you tell their babies that they are lovely, happy children!

I talk to myself to get an intelligent answer! I meet many people and converse with them but as I live alone I do talk to myself. It can be on a couple of levels, sometimes reminding myself of something I need to do, where I find speaking aloud seems to help the matter to be remembered as there is no longer anyone to remind me. Then when the politicians and other lunatics behave in an appalling way and definitely not with my blessing it allows me to have a bit of a rant and get it off my chest. But I also say poetry aloud sometimes or learn music etc. There is quite a difference between what you read silently and what is read aloud. Sometimes you find that you hear some subtle nuances by speaking a poem aloud or hear another cross rhymne which you would not have by not speaking out loud. I have always done it, have no intention of changing and think that if you are noticing it more in your husband you might try and work out if he is doing it more that before , or have you changed some thing so that you are much more aware of something he has always done

I used to talk to the dog because he always smiled, wagged his tail and was happy to listen but we no longer have a dog.

There are some soft toys on the DGC 's beds so I talk to them now 😁

I did say to a dog in a pub "You are so gorgeous" and the owner said he thought I meant him grin

Oh, absolutely. I have these delayed reactions sometimes when the answer I gave to whatever, whomever, whenever come roaring back with a snappier retort and I find myself saying it outlook.

You only wish you could have thought of it then…

I have a constant internal monologue, and quite often it doesn’t stay internal.

I talk to myself most of the time and even speak to inanimate objects! If I want to remember where I've put something I'll say aloud, for example, 'The phone's on the bookcase'.

Found myself talking to the robot vacuum yesterday

Lovetopaint037 Wed 15-Nov-23 09:24:54

It’s not really talking to yourself it’s just airing your thoughts out loud. I do it all the time and I wish I didn’t. It’s like a child who you hear talking to himself as he pushes a toy car around etc. or when they act out something they have seen in a film. An educationist some years ago named Joan Tough called it “self maintaining” language. I think I have come full circle and am now at that stage once again.
