Endometriosis South Coast (ESC) has appointed transgender Labour activist Steph Richards as the organisations new head.

It's a debilitating, distressing and extremely painful condition that can result in miscarriage and can lead to infertility. Why on earth would anyone not want a biological female in such an important and possibly influential role when this condition can only affect natal women?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 14-Nov-23 13:50:36

You could argue that he has at least as much knowledge of the condition as a natal woman who has not suffered from it. I don’t consider it’s necessary to suffer from endometriosis, or to be a natal woman, in order to be the head of the charity.

I was infuriated when I read this earlier. Maybe a trans man should be in charge of a charity for erectile dysfunction!

BeverleyJB Tue 14-Nov-23 13:53:01

Not only is this individual a man, but is openly misogynist, as evidenced by his posts on X including “See you in hell if you are a #terf, nothing will stop me from strutting my stuff.”
What a kick in the teeth for women from a charity that should be supporting us - shameful.

You do not have to suffer a condition to work in that field, do you think that GPs have personnel experience of all the conditions there patients have.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 14-Nov-23 13:57:45

I had endometriosis when I was younger, my gynaecologist was male, he was kind, considerate and empathetic.

Without him I wouldn’t be a Mum.

If this person got the job on merit and experience so be it.

I'm not saying that anyone does have to suffer with a particular condition to work in a particular field TheExwife, I'm questioning the sense of this particular appointment, and Beverley's post makes the appointment IMO even more questionable.

Smileless2012 Tue 14-Nov-23 14:04:41

My gynaecologist was the same GrannyGravy.

Perhaps those of us who have had children should be excluded as well. After all we can't possibly imagine what it is like can we?

Galaxy Tue 14-Nov-23 16:08:14

Women with endometriosis can have children. It can lead to fertility issues but does not mean you cant have children.

I know that. But if you didn't have the problem and conceived and had children easily surely you wouldn't appreciate the problems.

Why?? 🤔

I dont reallyhave any strong feelings about a man being head of a womans charity for want of a better description. I tend not to play identity politics if at all possible. I am vaguely concerned about aggressive tweets

Galaxy Tue 14-Nov-23 16:36:30

Sorry. Vaguely aggressive tweets towards women with whom he disagrees.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 14-Nov-23 16:39:56

My sister in law and two friends had endometriosis. None were able to have children. Although I haven’t suffered from it I have witnessed the physical pain and the mental pain of not being able to have children. Yes Glorianny, we can imagine what it’s like and thank God it’s not us.

Shelflife Tue 14-Nov-23 16:41:05

GSM, I agree with you. Why should she not head the charity? Lots of people manage the treatment of conditions that they have no personal experience of. Is this an issue about a trans woman or about a person with no experience of endometriosis? Either way if they can do the job - why not? I recognize that the trans issue is difficult for people to understand but it has been around for a very long time but is now acknowledged! Hard as it is we must accept.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 14-Nov-23 16:47:34

The important thing is ability to raise awareness of this cruel condition, provide a source of comfort for sufferers and raise money for research and publicity. I couldn’t care less if it was a green man with two heads if they could do that.

It's not an easy route but it can be possible.

You have hit the nail in the head GSM.

Callistemon21 Tue 14-Nov-23 17:15:41

And - it requires someone with empathy, even if they have not experienced it themselves, to head up this charity.

I hope he has empathy as well as the skills required to help those with this distressing condition.

grannypiper Tue 14-Nov-23 17:45:50

I am more worried about his aggressive Tweets.

Well that is a cause for concern,

Where's the Minister for Common Sense?

paddyann54 Tue 14-Nov-23 17:52:29

the gynaecologist I see is male he has no personal experience of the issues .I've had for more than a decade ..BUT he's a brilliant caring ,,helpful man .As was the previous gynae doctor I saw .Surely we're past this nonsense ,if the new person in the job got it on merit then its not even worth answering the OP.I remember a husband having to be dragged away from a male midwife in the 70's when his wife was in labour ,I thought we'd all grown up since then!

Callistemon21 Tue 14-Nov-23 18:01:54

Of course it's fine, no-one is disputing that.

Unless, of course, he is a misogynist.

In all the years I have had medical treatment, I have come across juet two misogynistic doctors, one a gynacological registrar, one a locum GP and the nurses in both cases expressed their concerns.

It was two too many.

Galaxy Tue 14-Nov-23 18:04:31

Yes I can still picture the misogynistic doctor who discussed my PCOS, I was very young and not confident enough to stand up to him.
