People saying Merry Christmas in November

For Millie -- my sister probably finished her Xmas shopping round about February. I tend to think - reluctantly - about mine about halfway through December.

If somebody wished me Merry (or Happy) Xmas in November, I'd be inclined to ask if they were late for the last one, or early for this?

Officially Christmas begins on 25 December. Advent begins next Sunday. Don't think you would wish anyone Happy Advent.

Bah, humbug!

Met my somewhat Scroogey/Grinchy brother for lunch the other day and was amazed to see that he had a Christmas jumper on.
And I said so.
Whereupon he promptly unzipped it to reveal a black T shirt underneath saying ‘*BAH HUMBUG!*
We all had a good 😂.

Well, if anyone wished me a happy Christmas or New Year in November, I would ask them what calender they were using!

However, as shops are selling Christmas presents, food etc. in November because of the fact that few if any are still paid their wages weekly or fortnightly, so this next pay day is the LAST BEFORE CHRISTMAS as the next one coincides with Hogmanay, I can understand why shop assistants have been told to wish customers a happy Christmas.

I don't care for it, but people utter courteous phrases without thinking.

Right now, I am astonished every time I cancell one of DH's subscriptions or the like and explain that he died at the beginning of this month, that whoever I speak to starts off all right by offering conventional sympathy but invariable ends the short telephone call by say, "Have a good day!"

Honestly, how good are any of my days likely to be five weeks after my husband's death? I know it is meant kindly, but surely there is a more conventional way of ending a conversation in these circumstances?

When I was young the Christmas tree did not get done until Christmas eve

Now that Christmas marketing begins so early it puts me off so much that i blank it out, the only problem is that when Christmas actually does begin to approach I get caught out !

I think it's a bit early too, but have received 2 cards already. I think people are trying to beat the rush, though one was from USA so they must have expected it to take longer.

I agree with you GrandtanteJE65. I am still needing to make calls about my husband’s estate seven months on, and all but the most understanding end up hoping I enjoy the rest of my day. They haven’t wished me Merry Christmas yet. They might get a response they won’t want to hear if they do!

Goodness me! What is wrong with people? With all the hate in this world and people moaning about being wished a Merry Christmas! Embrace it …. Smile and wish them a Merry Christmas back, it takes seconds and maybe you will brighten that persons day. Merry Christmas everyone!

I can understand the shops putting on their Christmas adverts, but not people privately greeting each other with Happy Christmas - much too early!!

It honestly wouldn’t remotely bother me if anyone wished me a Merry Christmas tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here’s a lovely tasteful decoration someone’s MiL has sent them (on MN) and they don’t know how to tell her they don’t want it!

My sister lives 4 hrs away from me. She'll be down this weekend and when she goes back, I'll definitely be wishing her a Merry Christmas.

Oh dear - I have wrapped most of my families Xmas presents as time is rushing by and very busy doing music stuff 🎶- Xmas related of course ! But yes too early to say Happy Xmas !

Bea65 What really gets my goat is town centre Christmas lights switched on halfway through November. Northumberland is a unitary authority and our council tax pays for lights in Berwick, Alnwick, Hexham, Morpeth, Ashington, Blyth, Cramlington and Ponteland. Surely the 1st of December is soon enough when you also consider the energy so many lights use? Some say it's to get people into the town centres to spend money but I don't believe most people wait till it's dark to go shopping nor will they spend any more over six weeks rather than four! I'm considering a freedom of information request to know how much it costs to run the lights in eight town centres for two weeks in November... I like the lights. They are a cheerful sight but December is enough!

We are having our Christmas lunch on 21st February for the very reason Maizie D states. February is a dreary month so we will have something to look forward to, December is so busy and so much going on we don't need it then. Everyone to their own. We will however not be saying Happy Christmas in February, just Cheers!!!!

I always feel sorry for the 3 Kings in our Nativity Set- they have to wait at the far end of the mantelpiece, inching their way along -and just as they get there- Bang! That human whisks them away, wraps them in tissue paper and puts them in a box in the loft

People mean well when they say it though, so it's pretty harmless. And a tiny spark of light in this dark world at present.
