I've only gone and done it!!

Congratulations! I was in a similar situation 18 months ago, I sold my house (where I had lived for 40+ years!) and decided to rent. I found a wonderful top floor (only 3 floors) flat with a wrap round balcony and I have been so happy for the last 18 months! No old house to maintain, any problems I have become the landlords problems, a much smaller place to clean, no large garden to stress over (just a few pots now!). It is the home I have always wanted and I have just renewed my contract for another 18 months. Before I sold my house I asked for peoples opinions on Gransnet and whilst some were encouraging a lot of people said it was a ridiculous move to rent. They were so wrong. Best thing I have ever done. I am sure you will be as happy as I am!

Congratulations on your new home. 🏠 hope you will be very happy there I moved into a rented bungalow (with a wet room) at the very end of October. Although I found the move stressful it’s the best decision I could have made. I’m loving this one level living. I’m still surrounded by boxes although I’ve got rid of an awful lot of stuff. Hopefully it will all be sorted in the next couple of weeks. Once again, congratulations!

Congratulations It shows you can do anything if you put your mind to it. You have got this far so you will have no problems moving in. Just think of the end goal your first Christmas in your new home. Hope it all goes well for you.

Please, don't do as my parents did! They moved and had everything they needed to use on the ground floor of their new home, so they stopped going up and down stairs and used lifts whenever they were somewhere where that was an option.

In an incredibly short space of time they both began to find walking up or downstairs, when they had to - visiting me in a flat from the 1890s with no lift in the building, for instance, extremely hard, although both were fit for their age.

So please walk regularly up and down a flight of stairs, rather than using lifts or escalators - you will stay fit for longer.

Of course, if you already have mobilty issues this may not be possible, but if not bear it in mind.

If you going to donate any large furniture items they need two weeks notice to book. I moved into my bungalow in aug don’t forget your drs and hospital there take 6 weeks to forward everything too also the bags for your duvet and pillows I’ve added a photo for you. They got tossed around and survived my move and kept them clean and are great storage bags for afterwards. I did one room at a time and it’s great to declutter i didn’t realise how much I had until I was packing up lol

I moved to a leasehold flat where the freeholder is a housing association; they take care of most repairs and we pay a service charge and there is a sinking fund for major costs funded when the flats are sold. The weight lifted off me with no longer having to look after an old house was tremendous!

choose a decent spot near the window and put your most comfortable chair there and a small table or stool and a lamp or light of some kind, looking out. That can be your go to place when it gets on top of you. You will be looking out of the window so cannot see the chaos behind you, have space for a coffee cup and a good book and perhaps the radio for good measure , so every time you feel totally weary and exhausted or fed up at the length of time it seems to take to get anything where you want it , you can turn your back on it all and sit in your chair for 20 minutes and then get up refreshed to have another go. wishing you every happiness in your new home. Well, I'm happy to join in all the "good luck" messages, but for all those stating "love renting" (etc) - have they somehow missed all the agonised TV news clips of unfortunate tenants booted out by a Section 21 eviction (some after years in the place)?

Thank you all for the good wishes. I just can't wait for the 18th.... my new Christmas day lol..... have already taken lots of things to flat and put in cupboards. Love the tip about the using of stairs to maintain fitness I promise I will do so. The lift is very slow so unless carrying bags of shopping will be quicker by stairs 😊 also the chair looking out the window and turning my back on the mess!!!
