Family coming home for Christmas

I have both my children home with me for Christmas, the first time for ages. My daughter lives in Gibraltar and married a local chap this year; both will be with us, as well as my son (who normally works over Christmas but is free this year).

We do have one unhappy situation; my sister and her family were due to join us but her son has developed cancer (only 24, so sad); I don't know whether they will still want to come. I hope they do, but they may not feel up to it.

My niece, her husband and 2 teenage children are flying out to us here in California. Her mother, my sister, isn’t able to fly, but we will be flying to London in January to spend a week with her there. Two long distance visits to look forward to!

Have a wonderful time. My daughter is living in Canada now so won’t be seeing much of her. Hope to go out next year though. Such a long way, thankfully there is zoom. But not quite the same.

My son and family arrive on Monday from Dubai for three weeks. My granddaughter was 5 lbs at birth and a month premature. Now a healthy happy 12 year old, but a little worrying at the time. A happy Christmas to all you lovely ladies (and the occasional man!).

Soooo pleased for you. I experienced this a few years back during Coverd when my daughter gave birth. I didn’t see my granddaughter for 20 months. Have a fabulous time, how wonderful!

I know how you feel GA. Have a wonderful reunion. Our son and family have moved back to the UK this year from Singapore and we will all be together around the table along with our daughter and family who live locally. We haven’t spent Christmas together for four years.

I share your excitement as my son and his family are travelling from Australia to spend Christmas with us. We saw him briefly when Australia opened up after Covid so, like lots of others have seen him once in 4 years. Our daughter and her family will be there so for the first time in almost 5 years we will all be together. I can feel the excitement bubbling up already.

Not quite the same but we are flying out to Melbourne on Tuesday for 5 weeks and I really can’t wait! My DS2 had open heart surgery in September, it was a very worrying time being so far away but he seems to be recovering well. Then it was discovered his lovely partner had to have a large fibroid removed and at the same time had a hysterectomy, this was just 4 weeks ago, luckily she is also doing well. My eldest grandson will by flying in from Perth for Christmas as well. Haven’t seen them for 5 years and I am sooo excited to be able to give lots of hugs and kisses all round.

That is absolutely wonderful news for you. Treasure every minute with your family. We were going to see our family this Christmas at the other side of the world. Sorry to say my DH just diagnosed with Cancer. We will have zoom calls which will be nice. I bet you are so excited have a wonderful Christmas and a very good New Year

Congratulations GA, I can totally understand your excitement at seeing your family again, it is such a worry when they are so far away. My middle son is returning home next week for the three weeks covering Christmas and New Year. He has lived and worked in Japan for the last 10 years and it is two years since we saw him last. I can’t wait to have Christmas with all my boys together. He is also particularly looking forward to Christmas as it isn’t an event that is really celebrated in Japan. He already has his list of food he would like to eat prepared.

GA, what lovely news. I'm so glad that you will have a happy family Christmas together. I remember your trials and tribulations in our early days here and sharing your anxiety about your New Zealand granddaughter. She sounds like a bright spark despite her early arrival. I count myself fortunate to have five healthy grandchildren (adults now) and a very robust 18-month-old great-granddaughter; and now live close enough to have regular contact with them.
