Well deserved, and yes, nasty little man.
But ... and i know we shouldn't comment on what other women wear, and was hoping somebody else would do. But what on earth ?!? was she wearing ?!?

What do you think of Mary Earps being SPOTY?
(66 Posts)Mary Earps, England Women’s goalkeeper was voted BBC’s Sports Personality Of The Year. A lot have said there were more deserving sport’s people who have achieved more. Also it was an England Women’s player last year. The odious Joey Barton has made some horrible comments on Twitter. Should Mary have got it or is it the ‘woke’ BBC? Personally I think she was voted for so that’s that.
Joey Barton is disliked by lots of football loving men. He’s sexist and not very bright. Lots of women in sports have to deal with this bias. We have a family member that is an elite sports woman so we see it first hand.On the plus side women face fire with fire and surrounded themselves with like minded people. The Joey Barton’s are a there but looked down on .

She got it for being a great sportswoman and an inspiration to girls in any and every sport.
That’s enough for me! 👏👏👏👏
This is why I voted for her..! Obviously, lots of people agreed - and used their votes...!!
I voted for her. An amazing goalkeeper!
I’m delighted!
Could it be a combination secondhandrose that would seem worthy to me
Depends if SPOTY is given for sporting achievement or not. Or is it for raising awareness of the women’s game? Or any other reason?
How many votes would Joey Barton get? Mary was voted top.
Congratulation, Mary, Queen of Stops! A worthy winner and great inspiration.
I voted for her. I just love her personality and the fact that she encourages young girls to play a sport which in my mind that can be a positive. A girls team play matches on my local park and I was watching a match and got talking to another lady watching. I commented how good the one goalie was and she beamed with pride and said it was her daughter. She said no one in their family was sportie and her daughter hadn't been until she saw Mary in goal and thought she might like to have a go and found she loved it and had a talent. Her Mom said all she had done before was sit watching the TV or on her phone and now she trained twice a week and played in matches and was a fitter and happier young girl.

I would have gone for Ronnie O’Sullivan - great career. Eight championships including being the youngest and oldest and not even a mention!
I cannot stand him, although he's never done anything to offend me!

Congratulations Mary Earp. I’m pleased the bbc sports coverage includes football and delighted the women’s game is getting more coverage
Joey Barton has always been odious. I’d like to see more from the men’s game shouting him and other misogynists down
What a vile comment from this unpleasant man .
Congratulations , Mary .
Mary Earps completely deserved this award.
Joey Barton sounds horrible.
Brought up in one of the great northern footballing cities of the UK understanding and watching (men's) football is inextricably linked with my youth. Although I no longer watch football matches any success of my home team always makes me smile.
I have , in my later life, been absolutely astonished by the number of women who want to play football and the number of spectators who want to watch women's football.
This is a wonderful new sporting opportunity for women. Best of luck to players and spectators.
I don’t watch these programmes nor vote on them, I don’t have a lot of interest in sport, but I do know the British girls have achieved a lot and have influenced a lot of young girls, and if this young lady is a good role model then very good luck to her
No idea who Joey Barton is but he sounds a nasty piece 🤮
I think it's appropriate that once a year the BBC have a programme celebrating sporting achievements.
I'm not a football fan but I think it's wonderful how women's sport has progressed and women's football has achieved so much. So, well done, Mary Earps.
Of course she should win! Well deserved. It made my DGD very happy. I have a football obsessed DGD who is very fit and now at 15 plays for 2 amateur teams and wants to study sports science or whatever at university eventually. It amazes me!
Lots of people have more than one TV screen now, I believe, so could choose to watch another channel.

“They’ve lost to a big bag of spuds that plays in goal for a girl’s team” tweeted Joey Barton. What a horrible man. Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers where he last managed are well shot. Maybe he wants to stay in the news in the hope of getting another job. He also had a go at women football commentators. Any publicity is good?
What a nasty, sad little twerp (I wanted to use a different word). Stupid boy.
Never heard of him but I and millions of others have heard of Mary Earps and yes, she and women and girl footballers are an inspiration compared to some of the louts who play for men's teams.
Just looked him up - he's a nasty sexist thug who stabbed a lit cigar into someone's eye. Did he get sent to prison? No, but he should have been.

I missed all this but yes, Mary is a great choice!

Is no one else sick of the self-indulgent nature of these awards, promoted and run in totality by the BBC, for the BBC, in such a self-congratulatory manner, and the fact the the licence payer is funding the whole thing? There are a lot of people who have no real interest in sport, and I honestly think, if it wasn't run and promoted by the BBC, nobody would really miss it. Surely if we are still having to pay a licence fee for the BBC, they should be ploughing the money into good quality programmes.
So would you miss it?
I don't watch it, have no interest in sport at all, but neither do I watch Strictly Come Dancing; I am happy to accept that others have different tastes, hobbies and interest to me. We all should

It's an end-of-year tradition to review the sporting achievements of the year. So often one of us would say 'I'd forgotten that' or 'Oh that game/event was so good'.
And we remember those who died this year.
The votes are a small part of the whole thing.

👍Mary. Excellent
However I didn’t like her dress or the dress of the presenter.
